I’m just glad it wasn’t NYC. It would have caused massive inconveniences to the daily lives of everyone living in and around the city, and seriously, do we really need more of that?
It would have permanently ruined Greenpoint and Williamsburg, esp. Greenpoint. They may build those goddamn hi-rises anyway. The Olympics would have been horrible here. I mean for those worried about Security Risks, hello? And yeah, the waterfront in North Brooklyn. Frankly, I don’t think anyone in my hood wants a shadow cast permanently o’er their homes, or for there to be an additional 100,000 commuters on the G train either.
What?! It would have been great if NYC got it. I heard that they were gonna fit the Olympic Stadium INSIDE the Freedom Tower. You know, so it’d be safe.
[Rant] Congrats, New York. We have the 2010 winter olympics coming to Vancouver. There was a lot of opposition to it for similar reasons. We’re (obviously) a much smaller city than New York but have the same issues with traffic. We also have a dubious record of sweeping our homeless and drug addicted under the carpet every time a parade comes to town (Expo 86, anyone?).
Throw in the fact that we have the mildest winters in Canada (rain in february) and we have the making of a great winter games.
Of course, all that doesn’t mater when big business sees profit to be made at the public trough. [/Rant]
Did I miss some inside joke about Cleveland or is someone seriously supporting it?! It’s hardly even big enough to be considered a real “city”…but, it is the poorest city in the US, so that’s somethin’…
Cleveland is a much better choice. Olympics would do wonders for a small city. I live in Calgary, which hosted ’88 winter Olympics. Calgary is still small and bland, but without the Olympics to boost the local vibrancy, it would be worse.
Show of hands…. who is planning on going to the London games? I know I am.
I live in cleveland. I like it here. it is in fact a real city. and yes, currently cleveland has the highest rate of poverty in the nation(though there is debate about the figure). we’re number one! often people dis cleveland without ever having visited. let’s just say, it’s not the worst place to live.
In Cleveland the river burns, Dimebag bought it near there, and Kid Leo used to snort his payolla….and what about the flats? If you can’t get drunk their hop a ferry to Put-In-Bay the largest purveyor of Budwiser in the world – “The Round Bar”… who needs the F*$king Olympics nothing but a terrorist breeding ground…Bagdad would be the best choice, it would really kick start there economy….Gummer you need to get out more, Tennessee was just a taste! Middle America is calling for you.
clearly you haven’t been to cleveland in over a decade. they are putting in upscale housing in the flats, on both sides of the river. most of the bars there are closed. dimebag darrell was shot near columbus, not cleveland. the round bar is there too. put-in-bay is closer to toledo. and the river hasn’t burned in decades. moreover, we hardly have a monopoly on starting water on fire. rivers and harbors once burned in michigan, new york, maryland, and pennsylvania among others.
I love London…glad they won over Paris!

looks like the city will have to pull all those “candidate city” stickers from the subway cars.
what will the hip young brooklyn gymnastics fans do? to say nothing of the lower east side archery fanatics. serious, olympics?! slow news week.
Yay! You guys have to all come and stay at mine! So excited!
Whaaat about Cleveland? The mistake on the lake!
Bloomburg has to be nuts to think that having the Olympics in NYC would be great. The traffic in the city is already outrageous.
So glad NYC did not get it. WOOHOO!
The dream is finally over!
having the olympics in nyc was one of the worst ideas i’d ever heard. seemed more like a highdea to me.
cleveland is awesome. undeniable. the best location in the nation. new york is the big apple, but cleveland’s a plum.
Phew, I’m so glad NYC didn’t get it. I would’ve jumped out the winda!

CLEVLAND ROCKS! CLEVLAND ROCKS!
Yeah, I don’t get the Cleveland poverty thing. I mean have these people been to Toledo?
Oh, I’ve visited Cleveland many times. It’s not bad, but definitely not Olympic Games worthy. A bit cookie-cutter for the games.
Then again, I am one of those “misguided” people who loves Detroit. Seriously. I love the D.

C-town is definitely not the worst place to live in Ohio. I support Ken’s comment about Toledo…
The writing was on the wall when the West Side stadium deal for the Jets fell though. No stadium, no Games.
i just became a sufjan fan with this song. Thanks!

Hey I’m part of the chamber of Commerce…
Pretty sure it’s called the Cleveland Growth Association or something along those lines…
