A list of quicktime links for almost every song, so you can, like, skip “Life Is A Highway” if you want. Thanks Fiddle for the link.

I’m randomly clicking through the list for sets I missed on Saturday. “Take On Me” is surprisingly bland and off-key. Maybe it would be better in black and white.

Anyway, if you hit on a clip we should check out, post it in the comments.

  1. Aw, why the hate-on for Tom Cochrane?

“If you’re goin’ my way, I wanna ride it all night long, a-gimme-gimme-gimme-gimme yeah!”

Hmm, I think I just answered my own question.

  2. “Life Is A Highway” is actually my guilty pleasure. I owned the cassingle!

Umm, did you check out Green Day doing Queen? The Germans loved it.

  4. Jane  |   Posted on Jul 7th, 2005

Green Day. *swoon* Doing Queen. *double swoon*

That Billie Joe is a god, I swear. Minority freaking rocked.

Hey man screw you all! I remember jumping on the bed screaming the Cochrane when I was a kid and you know what? I did it again when I played the AOL cast.

You can learn lessons in the titles of songs!

    Life is a highway.
    Love is a battlefield.

    And so on. Don’t hate.

Wish to remain anonymous, but Cochrane’s band, Red Rider, put out a few good AOR albums in the ’80s. Their best is 1983′s “Neruda”, a sweeping, poetic sonic journey. Or something like that. A few years later, Tom was big enough that Canadians were debating who’s their rock king: Tom or Bryan. But Tom got old and uncool and his albums don’t sell anymore. Word is in the late ’90s he considered changing his name to “Tom Cockring” to fit in better with the music scene of the time (I once tried convincing a commercial radio DJ to say that over the air, but he wouldn’t bit. . .)

if you watch “if i had a million dollars” by bnl, at around 3:05, you can see someone in the crowd shaking their head and mouth something to the extent of “that’s wrong.”

whether it’s a protest against the appropriateness of the song or against kraft dinner (maybe both?)…i suppose that’s anyone’s guess.

i think pet shop boys “go west” was great
but i am biased because i love them and most things they do

  10. loveanddeath  |   Posted on Jul 8th, 2005

eerg, are those downloads not working for anyone else?

Always says the path isn’t correct…blagh I got my hopes up over that sgt. pepper d/l.

  11. Slooooooow, when it’s working. It’s a nice gesture, though. Hopefully they’ll beef up their bandwidth.

  12. Edwin  |   Posted on Jul 8th, 2005

Call me crazy, but these links are all streams from AOLMusic.com… It worked alot better actually going to the source.

  13. Hey everyone! If you want to convert a .mov file to AAC (or mp3, if that’s what you’ve selected as a codec in iTunes) all you have to do is add the file to your library, right-click and then choose “convert to AAC” and it’ll turn it into an audio file. Job’s a good ‘un.

  14. You can check out clips from the Edinburgh gig over at bbc.co.uk/scotland. Make sure to watch Annie Lennox and Travis.

And did anyone else notice that Robbie Williams was wearing an earing in his right ear? Am I caught in the 90′s or is that still a sign that you are gay ala Elton John and his big fuck off diamond in his right ear?

  15. timmy  |   Posted on Jul 8th, 2005

Shakira will crush you all with her abs.

  16. audioslave doing ‘killing in the name’ is just awkward and ter-ri-ble…its worth downloading for the cringe factor; sure it didn’t help that the sound was horrible…but cornell should never try to sing rage songs, it just does not work…man i miss rage agts the machine..

  17. matt  |   Posted on Jul 8th, 2005

Yeah i tried doing that, convert to aac, and it said error, and wouldn’t let me…

I had a problem watching Coldplay’s Fix You…said Quicktime can’t open it because it doesn’t understand the file type?

    one word:

    MUSE

  20. Britney’s expecting twins. Beat you to it…

  21. rerun  |   Posted on Jul 8th, 2005

Just heard MTV & VH1 are re-editing & rebroadcasting the show on Saturday July 9, due to complaints regarding the original broadcast. The sets from “Major” artists (hopefully this does not include Bon Jovi) will be shown in their entirety. Of course, it remains to be seen how poorly it will turn out this time.

  22. Anyone familiar with Red Rider (oh, the shame)? It was Cochrane’s band before he made the big time as a solo artist. They had a few successful hits in Canada during the 80′s.

How is it that Bryan Ferry has stopped aging? Not botox – cause there was a furrowed brow or two.

Neil Young’s “Four Strong Winds” was an absolute beauty. He’s aged — but still is super cool.

  24. Roxy Music’s “Virginia Plain” and “Do the Strand” were great–but is it only Ferry and the sax player left? I thought I heard somewhere that Eno had patched up relations with the Roxies.

Secondly, what the hell is the deal with the HIV-positive Muppet with a mullet and hippie vest?

Shameless plug–check out the first reviews for Super Furry Animals new “Love Kraft” and Supergrass’ “Road to Rouen” this weekend on:

You know what live 8 needed? MORE COWBELL!!!

  26. drewo  |   Posted on Jul 8th, 2005

re: Roxy — I think Phil Manzanera is in the band, and whoever plays drums these days (Paul Thompson?). I believe Roxy are working on a new record — Eno’s only involvement may be some studio assistance.

I know this is off-topic, but since it’s Sufjan-related, that should get a pass. New Sufjan track for NPR: http://pitchforkmedia.com/tracks/05-07-08.shtml

  28. canIhelp  |   Posted on Jul 8th, 2005

I had a “can not open does not understand file type” error for one too.
Actually, it was something about the name of the file. I just deleted a portion of the filename, tried to reopen, and it worked fine.

  29. Not something I’d expect to say, but when I was there, I really liked Def Leppard’s cover of “No Matter What.” That song is awesome, and I was surprised they covered something cool. It even sounds good. Plus it appears that drummer only has one arm.

  30. andrew  |   Posted on Jul 8th, 2005

and furthermore, the sound kind of sucks on these videos, just so people know. it sounded pretty good in philly.

  31. Andrew, you may have been in Philly, but where the hell were you in the 90′s when that dude lost his arm. If you’re under 14, I’ll give you an exemption.

  32. james cooper  |   Posted on Jul 8th, 2005

check out kanye doing his new track diamonds are forever, with a row of blindfolded violinists behind him.. amazing performance

  33. UglyRedHonda  |   Posted on Jul 8th, 2005

Dude, Uri, I think that was a joke. Either way, he lost his arm in the 80s. (Off the top of my head, I’d guess 1985.)

The sound was actually better on the original webcast than on the archived versions. MTV’s audio was so terrible that I actually stuck with the webcast on Saturday.

MTV is acceding to their mistake, and is planning to reair a large part of the Live 8 performances. 10am-3pm on VH-1 and 3pm-8pm on MTV, I think. Commercial-free, I believe. It sounds like some sets may appear in both five-hour segments.

  34. VonnieDoo  |   Posted on Jul 9th, 2005

Um why not just fucking watch them on AOL? They’re still up people.

  35. loved kaiser chiefs’ use of cowbell, as well as watching a bunch of old brits nod their heads to “drop it like it’s hot.” someone should have informed victoria beckham that she wasn’t at a photo shoot. digged “minority,” too. accordian players have so much sex appeal!

  36. juepucta  |   Posted on Jul 9th, 2005

Check out a tune called “Just like Ali” by Cochrane whenever you can guys. Not bad at all. From a couple of yrs ago.

    G.

robbie williams almost gets strangled as he stupidly sits down in front of the audience during “angels”

  38. Bonham Hathaway  |   Posted on Jul 9th, 2005

Actually, Kayne’s violinists are just wearing black paint over the eyes. On higher quality vidoes, you can see that their eyes are open as they’re playing.

  39. David Tallan  |   Posted on Jul 10th, 2005

Well, the list seems to no longer be available (403 error). You can still see the movies on AOL, but it is certainly challenging to save them. having the list of direct links was handy for that. I wonder if it is avialable anywhere else.

  40. Haha- about 4:23 in “If I Had A Million Dollars,” some crazy redneck stands out in the part where BNL is singing to the kids- he’s shaking his head and pointing at the camera angrily.

  41. 7 Seconds is a great song from Youssou n’dour.
However having dido sing it with him Killed it. Neneh Cherry should have sung it with him, but they probably wanted 2 different races.
