When we were talking Weezer a few months back, few of you were impressed by the band’s latest album, especially the tune “We Are All On Drugs.” But I’m gonna recommend you all check out the video for it anyway: it’s just Weezer’s song married with footage from Grim Reaper’s ’85 video for “Fear No Evil.” Apparently the clip is only for international outlets (i.e., you won’t see it on American MTV).

It has axes and a werewolf and shit. No Weezer, no Playboy Mansion. Watch the full video. (Windows Media)

If Weezer had commissioned it from scratch, it would be genius. But even as repurposed randomness it’s still pretty funny.

Apparently Rivers was a fan of the British metal group in his formative years. Which isn’t really surprising if you look at his yearbook photo.

  1. Brilliant. I haven’t felt this way about a weezer video since the dogs ran across the set in “undone”

  2. stevepap  |   Posted on Jul 15th, 2005

that isn’t really his yearbook photo is it? I mean, I know he is a closet metalhead, but that hair just seems impossible.

  3. best. video. ever.

  4. Irish  |   Posted on Jul 15th, 2005

    ROCK!!!

  5. AlanRudolph  |   Posted on Jul 15th, 2005

Actually, members of Weezer used to front the LA glam-rock band Zoom, Rivers Cuomo was in the hair metal band Avant Garde, and Matt Sharpe used to have really awful 80′s hair too.

Pictures of all of this are here…

i just saw that grim reaper video on VH1 classic a couple weeks ago.

  7. Wait did I miss something: “Few people were impressed”. I was quite sure that absolutely no one was impressed by that album.

Wait, I take that back. I was impressed by how depressed I was when I listened to it. I was impressed with how far they’ve fallen. I was impressed by how much my respect for Matt Sharp increased.

It truly must be how a die-hard Jefferson Airplane fan felt the first time he heard “We Built This City.”

  8. I didnt think the song fit the video at all, but as soon as I realized that that was probably the point, all was well.

The new weezer really isn’t all that bad. Come on people. As long as you skip ‘my best friend’ which in my opinion should have never made the cut, you’re golden. “Haunt You Every Day” Is the best closer they’ve had since the blue album. We Are All On Drugs rivals Surf Wax America in fluffy pop lyrics. Really…Make Believe is a reincarnation of the blue album. Isn’t that what the collective weezer fandom was asking for?? So stop bitching.

  9. Anybody else remember this video from Beavis and Butthead?

  10. Make Believe is many things, but a reincarnation (can an album be incarnated in the first place?) of the Blue Album is not one of them. With the exception of a few well crafted hooks (Hold Me, Perfect Situation) the album is full of inane lyrics and cliche “modern rock” banality.

The Blue Album was hardly a lyrical or musical masterpice. However, it was released when nothing else like it was around. Context matters. And because of that it is a superior album. Even in a vacuum, Make Believe is an inferior version of the Blue Album but layed against a background of a thousand bands that improved upon the Blue Album, it is a failure.

  11. Not that I care about Weezer, but the lyrics on this and “Beverly Hills” are supposed to sound inane: they are satire. But it is so mild, and the songs are so dull that I really don’t care.

That video was bitching, though. And River Cuomo’s highschool photo is HOTT!!!

  12. I’m having a hard time thinking the inane lyrics are satire, I think that’s just an excuse for running short on ideas. And even as far as satire goes they aren’t very good.
I love the blue album and pinkerton, but I am hard pressed to listen to weezer these days.

But the hair cut might change my mind.

  13. robb  |   Posted on Jul 15th, 2005

Great video, but the record is still a steaming pile of crap. I once bought everything Weezer put out, B-sides, imports, etc…but I still refuse to buy this new one.

  14. God i hate this song….and this video is NOT cool….the original one is….this is just playing shitty new weezer music over top of an ironically cool old video….

  15. that hair pic rules. gotta be photoshop-ed, no?

  16. djelvis  |   Posted on Jul 15th, 2005

did they re-edit the video, or is this a straight-up synch? It’s impossible to hope for another ‘dark side of the rainbow’, but…

  17. UglyRedHonda  |   Posted on Jul 15th, 2005

Jimmy Eat World did something like this a few months ago for “If You Don’t”. Can’t remember the name of the original video, though:

    http://bbs.jimmyeatworld.com/blog/video/ifYouDont.mov

  18. he had to have spent hours teasing that hair, very hard to believe

  19. ryan  |   Posted on Jul 16th, 2005

the new weezer album is good. the new weezer album is bad. its a matter of taste folks. i like it. i like their other albums, too. chances are, if you like weezer then you will like 45 more minutes of weezer. that year book photo aint real and i actually doubt that the video is even real. id like it to be though.

  20. Anna  |   Posted on Jul 17th, 2005

Dude, that Jimmy Eat World vid totally out-awesomes Weezer’s entire album, video and embarrassing hair pictures!

  21. shaz  |   Posted on Jul 18th, 2005

    Make Believe works for me.

  22. anonymous...  |   Posted on Jul 19th, 2005

    haha

well, besides that weezer is terrible now, and the new album is awful, that video is a hoax. created by someone on a message board affiliated with weezer’s old official message boards… it was a joke, it’s fake. funny to see it make it all the way here.

  23. blah  |   Posted on Jul 19th, 2005

you stupid fucks, the album is better than anything since pinkerton, it might not be up to that caliber but they haven’t fucking fallen far, this is an improvement over the pile of shit that came out in 2002 – maladroit. if you call an album that has songs such as haunt you every day, the other way, perfect situation “awful” then you’re a fucking idiot and go hang yourself.

  24. I’m one of those bitchy “blue/pinkerton ruled and green/maladroit sucked” fans, but I really like Make Believe a lot.

  25. Webward  |   Posted on Jul 20th, 2005

“I was impressed by how much my respect for Matt Sharp increased.”

Shut up, retard. His solo album is awful. He had nothing to do with what made Weezer good back in the day.

  26. haha  |   Posted on Jul 20th, 2005

lol! weezer is bad. but then again this site has info about ‘franz ferdinand’ on the main page, so…

  27. I didn’t like there last song “beverly hills” but “we are all on drugs” seems to shine compared to the rest, I will admit weezer has taken a turn, whether for the better or worse I can’t say. Kinda reminds me when the smashing pumpkins went from mellon collie to litterally smashing pumpkins, metal heads.

  28. Weezerallthewayman  |   Posted on Jul 22nd, 2005

    C’mon !

You have to admit that there latest album is some of the best stuff they’ve done in years… Give the album a chance and just listen to it….

  29. R u fucken kidding me?Briliant?Fucken BULLSHIT.
What was that,a brave heart stuff?
Best video ever?FUCK YOU who said that.
    And the band SUCKS too.
    Idiots.

  30. Will Donald  |   Posted on Jul 25th, 2005

wow, that is definatly the best song out and the moment and also the best video

    rock on weezer!!! \m/00\m/

  31. This album is definetly a turning point for the band. I think we will have to wait until their next album to see if it is a turn for the best or worst. There are some really great tracks on this record, but a great album as a whole, it is not. “Perfect Situation” and “You really freak me out” are great songs. Their flagship songs “we are all on drugs” and Beverly Hills have hooks that remind me of the old Weezer. Which is great, but does not have all that teanage angst/appathy that was associated with Pinkerton or Blue. We ( or I alone?) shall wait and see.

  32. i luv da song but the vidoe doent go with it they need sum reali bright coloured trippy 1! luvin da pics xx

  33. Megan  |   Posted on Jul 27th, 2005

The song is just fabulous, I am really impressed, but the video. . .well, I think it could have been better.

  34. Munkitus  |   Posted on Jul 29th, 2005

Come on guys lighten up! i think this song and the video rip-off/recommission especiially, are just meant to be a bit of fun!

i laughed my ass off when i first saw it on tv anyway. catchy lyrics neway.

  35. that picture is his real photo from high school. i promise you.

  36. michael  |   Posted on Aug 1st, 2005

whoever says the new album is bad probably hasnt even listened to any of the other songs on it. give it a chance and u will like it.

  37. hatefuel66  |   Posted on Aug 5th, 2005

the video rules, the song works so well with the video. the concept of metal lords coming out of the sea on a boat and saving slaves from death and a wolfman works so well with “we are all on drugs”. i thought when i first saw it that it was actually made for the video and the guy who directed it musta been a genius sad that its a re edit thru.

    pretty cool

  38. I Think Every single one of you are boobs, holy shit what kind of fucking fans are you? If your a weezer fan and your postin shit about there former albums saying they sucked then your not a god dam weezer fan. Make Believe is one Wicked album and im not gunna be a gay ass comparing it to blue album pinkerton green or maladroit. THERE ALL GREAT! if you dont like one album you dont like Weezer So FUCK OFF you fag’s who say that the green album and maladroit are shit, I LOVED MALADROIT, and even though the green album was a little more pop than most thier cd’s it was still amazing.

One more thing, if your not even a weezer fan what so ever dont POST HERE!And while im on this tremendous rampage i Also think that Greenday sucks cock, there a bunch of poser assholes. And the only people who buy their music are little fag poser’s who want to look cool.

    …god…

  39. Daisy  |   Posted on Aug 15th, 2005

    i love weezer

  40. that is definitely his REAL high school photo. no photoshop or any other editing at all… the video is great and funny as hell. and the new album rocks. if u hate the new album and were a weezer fan from back in the day, then stop supporting them. just quit your bitchin! roister rules!

  41. James  |   Posted on Aug 23rd, 2005

I have to agree that anyone who thinks songs like The Other Way, Haunt You Everyday, Perfect Situation, etc, are crap songs is an idiot and needs their head checked. Like most die-hard Weezer fans I love Pinkerton the most, but Maladroit is fucking great! If you don’t like the Green album you most likely don’t like things that sound good…or you’re deaf. The Blue album stands on its own as an instant classic. Most of this hate is probably from people who have never played a guitar let alone ever written a song. I think Pat Wilson joked that you have to hate Weezer to be a true fan. Looking at the previous posts, it seems Weezer still has a lot of fans!

  42. well well welly well well…

    the video. the song. the album. its a complete joke. weezer themselves pretty much admitted to it. i have the album as well as all of the other ones (except for the japanese versions… ugh… live preformances) weezer also hinted that they probably arent going to be together for much longer, they also said to take the last page of the “make believe” poem and think what we want of it;

    “This rough magic,
    I here abjure, and,
    when I have required
    Some heavenly music,
    which even now i do,
    To work mine end upon
    their senses that
    This airy charm is for,
    I’ll break my staff,
    Bury it in certan fathoms
    in the earth,
    And deeper than did
    ever plummet sound
    I’ll drown my book.”

which proves a MAJOR point that what they are hinting at is true. its the same with this video. none of them are in it. its also a low quality sound, and on the song. rivers says in the latest version “i want to confiscate your drugs, i dont think i can get enough.” not “i want to reach a higer place, where things will never be the same”. wierd thing is… on the lyrics for the song it says the same lyrics as it does in the video. im not sure why, seeing as i bought this straight from the store, packaged. it might be another clue, or it might be a lyric screw up rivers made. you know how he is…

anyways… i think personally weezer itself is allready dead. their tour dates are still existant, but i personally dont think it will be for much longer. they were good while they lasted at least (some times more than others).

  43. pete  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2005

nice to see that this band is so completely out of ideas that they can’t even make a new video. oh wait- i forgot, this is part of the new “remix culture” right?

  44. METAL  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2005

This is the biggest disgrace to Heavy Metal

    GRIM REAPER!!!!
    WEEZER SUCKS

    FEAR NO EVIL

  45. This video works a bit too well. Key moments in the song (changing between verse and chorus) match very well, and the guitar solo is right at the same time!! The very fact that the song is called we are all on drugs seems to take care of the fact that the video is about mad max-style warriors fighting the grim reaper and a werewolf.
    scary.

  46. Lindsey  |   Posted on Aug 30th, 2005

ok now i have been a die hard fan since the beging, and i love this whole album, but that video just wasn’t um…….. i don’t know it didn’t tickle my fancy. and to Topher if you ever read this my best friend is one of my favorite songs on the album. and another thing to all you fuck bithces that are blue and pinkerton fans, but not green and maladroit, and make beleive fans, then your not really fans at all are you.? have any of you even heard the teenage victory song? well anyways i have to go for now talk to you possers later.

  47. Brian  |   Posted on Sep 2nd, 2005

weezer blows goats and green day puts their sorry wannabe asses to shame.

  51. weezer101  |   Posted on Sep 17th, 2005

i loved this album and i dont see what the debate is about, either u like it and thats that or u dont and that is that, but u feel the need to defend the album to people who no mater what wont admitt they like it if u do change their minds. On topic of the vido….i tought it was fucked up and made no sense whatsoever. im guessing that was the point, but in my mind it really didnt work. the american video for we are all on drugs is lame also. I am absolutly in love with the song, but weezers gotta step it up with the vids!

  52. Kerri  |   Posted on Sep 18th, 2005

    I love weezer!

  53. im so upset that weezer would change their song titlew to “we are all in love” for mtv, its blows and i used to love them, now i am going to burn my weezeer poster, they should never go back and change a brilliant songs title to a load of shit just for fucking mtv, mtv ruins bands and they suck, i miss we are all on drugs…no one cares if “we are all in love” so yeah, they suck!

  54. andrew  |   Posted on Sep 28th, 2005

  59. mullet man  |   Posted on Oct 17th, 2005

Weezer have made so many great vids, now you fuckers just wipe them off like a piece of shit because it isn’t up to par with all the rest – FUCK YOU ALL – get a life, it’s only a video and it’s only music. Go do better yourselves. Can any of you actually write and perform like these guys…ummmm, waiting for an answer….. hmmmmm… thought so….Answer: NO YOU FUCKING CAN’T

  60. John  |   Posted on Oct 31st, 2005

    Fuck MTV!!!
This corporate shit has ruined true artists from fighting the man. Weezer would never change a song so good on an album that they spent so long to make. The reason is this: MTV wouldn’t benifit from changing one word of one song. If youre retarded and dont know, the song is a proclimation against the pharachutical (drug) industry, and why things like heartburn and depression have to be treated by daily pills. Its obvious that these drug overlords( thats what they are) forced them to change it. I myself had to look at the video three times to understand it. But WE ARE ALL IN LOVE? WHAT THE FUCK!!!!!
IN THE LAST SCENE, RIVERS TELLS A FIREMAN, WHO IS PUTTING OUT THE WRONG HOUSE, THE FUCKIN LINE.Thats just not right. Fuck drugs.

  61. jimbo  |   Posted on Nov 17th, 2005

Wow. What is wrong with you people? Weezer writes a bunch of second rate sing-a-longs and you all bow down to them. You all bow down to a group of skinny, ugly, untalented yuppies? What the fuck has happened to music?!?!?! Fuck all of you worthless Weezer fans!!!!

  62. jackhard  |   Posted on Nov 17th, 2005

Hey mullet man, you sound like you enjoy penis. Weezer isnt any good, and I CAN write and perform better than all of them, thank you. Uuum, waiting for an answer, ummm… Remember when you did that? Huh mullet man? When you typed: ummmm…waiting for an answer, uummmm. That was pretty clever. Weezer sucks.

  63. ChrisW  |   Posted on Nov 23rd, 2005

Blue Albu Was awesome Pinkerton was even better but sinse green album they have sucked make believe is crappy pop album weezer made to make more money, just like green day and american. WEEZER WHY CANT U BE GOOD AGAIN!!1

  64. Good songer

  65. agry with Weezer’s :0
    hmm….interesting video

  66. Weezer sucks…BIG TIME!!!

  67. Cara  |   Posted on Jan 5th, 2006

Im going to need a moment to process that video. Don’t get me wrong I LOVE Weezer. Especially, “Make Believe” But, That reaper video…I don’t know. It reminds me of that retard art(when I say retard art I don’t necessarily mean made by retarded ppl, just odd, dumb ppl who may or may not me retarded) that nobody understands. Then a bunch of morons pretend they DO understand it and find some brilliance in it and pay millions for it. Personally, I see why Rivers shot the new video.

Oh, and that high school photo…. DEAD SEXY!
I wish I could get volume like that

  68. Weezer have made so many great vids, now you fuckers just wipe them off like a piece of shit because it isn’t up to par with all the rest – FUCK YOU ALL – get a life, it’s only a video and it’s only music. Go do better yourselves.

  69. Steven Covey  |   Posted on Jan 6th, 2006

I think Make Believe is quite sucky. As for the whole blue/green/pink album debate, you guys have all missed the point. The green album is magic, to make it incredible all you have to do is get stoned and then listen to it! Works like a charm…

  70. adrian oram  |   Posted on Jan 13th, 2006

great to see that vid again – i was one of the headbangers in it. free beer all day and got paid – life doesnt get any sweeter!

  71. Adam  |   Posted on Jan 16th, 2006

I first heard the album “Make Believe” when my friend brought it over. I figured, hey, it’s Weezer, they’ve had some good songs, maybe this will be an opportunity for me to really discover them. I was greatly dissappointed. I’d say most of the music would be sub-par for a teenage garage band. I won’t even get into songs like “Freak Me Out”. Someone above suggested that it’s a “proclimation against the pharachutical (drug) industry”, and that was why MTV made them change the lyrics in the music video. First of all, it sounds to me like it’s about recreational drugs. But even if we say it’s a proclamation (note spelling) against the pharmaceutical (again, note spelling) industry, there’s much more controversial material that gets aired on MTV, and even if MTV asked, Weezer didn’t have to roll over. They’re still popular enough (for reasons beyond me) to have a bit of leverage. So, I’d say what you’re watching is either a watered down version of an already tame song, or Weezer realized they made a mistake on the song, but failed to really correct it.

  72. Big Dave  |   Posted on Jul 21st, 2007

great video good sights nice bus ride from a bus driver i am…

  73. the new album is so good- best since pinkerton!
