Ben Gibbard performing Complicated sounds like an actual death cab song… would it kill him to do something upbeat?

  6. Wow, thanks!

The Flaming Lips version of “Under Pressure” is infinitely better than the My Chemical Romance version. Who let those losers cover Freddie and Bowie?

  8. some of these tracks sound like karaoke sessions (hey ya & dancing queen)… if you didn’t know they were indie rock stars, they could have been from a night @ the karaoke bar.

  9. this is definitely kickass. i especially am fond of Bishop Allen’s cover of Cash.

  10. oh, and YES, the Lips kick so much ass with that song. but how hilarious (and maybe a little annoying/sad?) is it to hear Wayne introducing Candlebox?!

I like MCR and The Used…so sue me. Though after hearing The Flaming Lips version, well it’s obvious that there was SO MUCH better.

    Err…theirs.

  13. I agree, Tom. Some of them do sound like a bad Karaoke night (listen to Belle and Sebatian’s “Video Killed…”) The Ben Gibbard cover of “Complicated” is still a jem.

  14. What about the Travis Morrison cover of “WHat’s Your Fantasy?” by Ludacris?

  15. The most recent information to CDBaby artists from its founder Derek Sivers is that their top selling songs are ‘covers’ of songs that are already popular. New artists are being found by those searching for songs they love. When they see a cover done again, they get curious and listen. Sometimes they find that they like the new one better than the original.

As an artist myself, I have to say that the covers I am generally interested in playing are those with a ‘message’ I can relate to. There’s the message, and then there is how it is ‘delivered’. The difference is in the ‘delivery’ by individual artists. If you are curious enough, you can listen to my cover of ‘(Let’s) Get Together’ originally made popular by Jessie Colin and the Youngbloods, out at http://www.iuma.com for free. If you like it, you can find it at 23 internet music sites for purchase, which will help me continue to make music. My version is an upbeat reggae style of this song. I have received interesting feedback, both positive and negative, from those who have listened.

    Rock on!!
