Deep Sea Diver – “One By One” (Stereogum Premiere)
Even if you haven’t listened to Deep Sea Diver, there’s a good chance you’ve heard frontwoman Jessica Dobson before. If you’ve seen Beck, the Shins, or the Yeah Yeah Yeahs live over the last several years, you’ll have seen Dobson shredding on the sidelines. She’s finally taken the time to focus on her own project, and the results are fantastic. When I saw Deep Sea Diver take the stage at Sasquatch last year, my high expectations were exceeded (surprise Mariah Carey covers will do that), and now the band (rounded out to a trio with Peter Mansen on drums and Garrett Gue on bass) are back to recording. Their new EP, Always Waiting, is out next month, and today they’ve shared the single “One By One,” which already sounds like a leap forward from 2012’s History Speaks. Dobson’s voice soars over the band’s heavily layered sound, but everything locks together, gelling into something dense and triumphant. Even more than before, “One By One” feels like the start of something great. Listen below.
Always Waiting is self-released and will be out 9/2. Pre-order it here.
