Anyone hear it? Pitchfork doesn’t know much and Music70 hasn’t been updated.

Stop teasing us Warpbots!

UPDATE: I stand corrected. PFork‘s on top of this story. (Thanks Scott!)

  1. can’t wait. can’t wait. can’t wait. can’t wait. can’t wait. can’t wait.

  2. Pitchfork doesn’t know much

hey, we printed the LP release date three weeks ago! Haven’t heard the record yet, though.

  3. Ohh boy, this is exciting.

It’s rare I get really excited these days …

  4. I am restless with anticipation for this one.

  5. Listening party tonight in NYC; hopefully it’ll leak afterwards…

  6. Justin  |   Posted on Aug 10th, 2005

Has anyone actually ever been to a “listening party”? That just sounds like the most awkward event ever. Do you just sit around, drinking, and not talking for the hour or so that the music is being played. What do you look at the entire time?

You know how when you play a song you like for someone, it’s kind of weird, because they feel like they have to just sit there listening to it, and you watch them for their reaction, and they know you are watching them, so they feel self-conscious?

My guess is that a listening party is like a big version of that.

  7. Photos of the Geogaddi party here: http://www.sillyape.org/013002-boc/

Went to an interesting event at this year’s MUTEK in Montreal where one floor of a club had pads laid down, and loads of headphones – and that was it, the DJ mixed and the listeners chilled to the sounds (video projections were being done for those with open eyes). I posted a tidbit on it here (with photo): http://d-i-r-t.blogspot.com/2005/06/mutek-in-retrospect.html

  8. The Geogaddi listening party (at the Angel Orensanz Foundation downtown) was friggin’ amazing. Perfect venue, enthusiastic but quiet crowd. If you can go tonight, It’ll probably be fun.

  9. Anyone know where it is tonight? Priya from Warp already said it was full, but may be worth stalking…

  10. depends on the listening party. some are really serious, no one’s talking and you just sit there and listen. thos parties seem to be really industry.

others are real casual to the point that you can’t even hear the album because everyone is talking. i have no idea what tonight’s party will be like.

  11. to keep you occupied in the meantime:

I AM LITERALLY DYING IN ANTICIPATION!

  13. Listening party is at:

    No. 1 Chinese
    50 ave. B
    East Village, NYC

  14. Great, another album to scare me shitless:

    http://www.speakeasy.org/~adbrown/boc.html

  15. New BoC is bound to be great, cannot wait to hear it. With that and the new Animal Collective, “Feels” (which is gorgeous), coming out on the same day, this fall is going to be just packed with great music (new Lightning Bolt, Silver Jews, Wolf Parade, et al.).

  16. No. 1 Chinese?!

  17. Ask and you shall receive. Pitchfork has the tracklist up right now.

  18. Orange.

    Sixtyten.

  19. XYZ is my favorite BoC track.

Thanks for the heads up, E.

  20. Justin – You’re totally dead on about playing music for someone. Especially if it’s your own music. You want them to be like in a buddhist trance or something and they just want to keep talking about whatever it was you were talking about before you said: “hmm, ok great, but shut up a listen to this new song I wrote about my socks” And they’re thinking, “Jesus how do I act approving without inviting more songs?” so they say something innocuous like “It’s good, is that a clarinet?” And you’ll be thinking “A Ha, my E-Bow has hit its target!” and you’ll say barely containing a smile that it’s not a clarinet, it’s a guitar. And rather than take the bait and ask how a guitar can sound like that they say “Cool. Did you see Tueday’s Daily Show?” And you’re like “Shut up and listen to my damn song! You just spoke over my clever ryhming of Sock and Ad Hoc!” Then after the 5 minute piano interlude, they finally get up and use the bathroom hoping you don’t pause the song.

Not that this happens to me, but I can imagine.

  21. Yes, but it’s not like the Boards will be there watching peoples’ reactions.

  22. I heard a tidbit of a new song and it was excelletn. Word is that it’s less Geogaddi and more Music Has the Right. I believe the word music critics will be using to describe it is “pastoral.”

  23. YES! Just got Bauhaus tickets…

  24. Michael  |   Posted on Aug 11th, 2005

Did you these guys aren’t even from Canada?!

I feel so cheap and trashy.

  25. Michael  |   Posted on Aug 11th, 2005

Did you know these guys aren’t even from Canada?!

I feel so cheap and trashy.

  26. Saying that BoC sounds “pastoral” is nothing new; every album of theirs has “pastoral” elements. And I wouldn’t be so sure you’re hearing a “new” song; tons of fakes are floating around as are old unreleased tunes. I’ll believe the new tracks only when the official album comes out. I imagine upcoming leaked versions could be suspect.

  27. “Did you know these guys aren’t even from Canada?!”

Not from Canada you say? Pity.

  28. andrew  |   Posted on Aug 11th, 2005

    i went to the ‘party’

it was basically two plays of the album tacked on to the beginning of a regular club night they have there

anyhow, the album was rather impressive
it’s kind of boards of canada minus the sinister
a perfect summer record though, too bad it’s coming out in october

  29. What venue was it at?

  30. henryo!d  |   Posted on Aug 15th, 2005

From my point of view it’s the most exciting thing musically for me for quite some time. I’m a breaks DJ and don’t really spend too much time trawling the depth’s of downtempo ambient music as not much of it is up to scratch. BOC on the other hand have everything I like in abundance…they’re enigmatic, withdrawn from the glare of the music press/machine, into intimate gatherings, produce incredible music.
So the release of The Campfire Headphase is giving me insomnia!!!
The guy who posted “I can’t belive they’re not from Canada…” both Marcus and Michael’s families uprooted and moved to Canada in the 70′s…this is where they draw a lot of their inspiration from, particularly from the educational films made by (you guessed it) The National Film Boards Of Canada…but everyone else knew that =¬]

  31. according to my soulseek wishlist, this thing has leaked to the internets.

  32. Adrian  |   Posted on Aug 16th, 2005

Boards of Canada are a Scottish electronica Duo. New album rumoured to sound great – it has found it’s way to a couple of sites I believe – but since been removed.

  33. sdssdsddsd  |   Posted on Aug 16th, 2005

the leaked one is said to be fake..

  34. I’ve heard the “leaked” LP that’s knocking about.

If you get info in iTunes The tracks say “encoded by Casey Grabowski”.

Casey Grabowski is the creator of ?Tric?, a free quarterly newsprint publication with a focus on the Delaware music scene.

He’s also in a band called Etchant who make (Surprise Surprise). Melodic BOCesque Electronica.

I call bullshit on this “leaked” LP and call bullshit on his method of grabbing the limelight, if that’s what the aim of this is.

  35. octopede  |   Posted on Aug 17th, 2005

Ah, hoax, we meet again. So the leaked LP is actually a mix of old Arovane and Freescha tunes, along with a bunch of generic ambient nibnub (although there are at least two allegedly bona fide BoC tracks from ‘Old tunes Vol. 1′). I say we focus now on the important stuff: crafting the most absurd hoaxes and propagating them throughout the internets. Maybe retitle Shatner’s first album according to Campfire’s tracklisting? Hmm.

  36. Well looks like theres a new one posted on Piratebay and im hoping this one is finally legit! crosses fingers

    and you know this how?

  38. cynicallyours  |   Posted on Aug 19th, 2005

SoozieQ are you smoking crack?Cause if you think a shitty mix of Two Live Crew,Nine Inch Nails, and some mexican radio announcers is the real Campfire Headphase, then You are a basehead.Stay away from that site and don’t even bother, its more bullshit, like the rest,at least the version that Casey Grabowski ripped sounds like BOC on some tracks.still,I’m with Bashford on the thought that,if this is Grabowski’s way of trying to achieve his ’15 minutes of fame’,it’s a pathetic way of going about it.Ah well kids..,Let’s all go to bed and set our alarms for October 17th.

  39. Besides, SeussieQ, you’re supposed to leak the guttertrash humpy-tracks on October 16th… Some Knight Templar of the Scottish Tattoo you’ve turned out to be…

  40. Karlheinz  |   Posted on Aug 19th, 2005

The latest torrent is fake…but at least it is the most entertaining one so far :)

  41. dudee  |   Posted on Aug 19th, 2005

haha i hope someone is collecting all these campfire fakes and makes a tribute website featuring them all of them with reviews! :)

  42. fuzzycandy  |   Posted on Aug 20th, 2005

    i’ve heard new boc.
    new album has already around
    “Peacock Tail” is nice track.
    :)

  43. robert  |   Posted on Aug 20th, 2005

Went to partay. It was kind of awkward only cause some people there wern’t even aware of who the boards were. I was suprised that they got in, being it so exclusive and all. Anyways, i see This record as a throw back to music has the right, but at the same time the cover suggests that they’ve grown up. For the cover is the same essentially yet the figure looks to be 19 or so. So i’m guessing that they are merely suggesting that they are growing with their sound, geodaggi must have been the puberty record. All in all I think this could be their best album. But its hard to say, cause i really loved the geo too.
anyways, nothing has been leeked. it’s impossible at this point. they’re printing all the copies in november but have all the designs and tracklistings ready. talk about speedy service.

  44. Treblab  |   Posted on Aug 20th, 2005

i’d hope it was printed before it’s october release.. though you’re right, i doubt it has been leaked yet. i don’t recall any geodaggis floating around prior to release anyway.

  45. This album is just…amazingly beautiful !
    BOC at their best !

  46. hlupá?ek  |   Posted on Aug 21st, 2005

There’s some good stuff in this fake. The Nails, The Magnetic Fields… Leonard Nimoy?

  47. paul  |   Posted on Aug 21st, 2005

i think boc are the best thing to happen to me in a while… i just wish they would release some of their older eps and lps from their own music70 label. stuff ive heard from acid memories like “echo the sun” or “wouldn?t you like to be free?” from play by numbers are some of their best shit… and they were very young when they made those records in ’89 and ’94! and for the record Michael Sandison, Marcus Sandison… they are brothers!!!!
can anyone who has heard the new record elaborate on the sound more than just… “i think its great”!!! i have been hoping that it sounds more acoustic… like from the beck remix … are there any vocals???/

  48. defor  |   Posted on Aug 22nd, 2005

On news group alt.binaries.sound.mp3.electronica, new BoC album has been posted. Boards_Of_Canada_-_00_-_The_Campfire_Headphase.nfo says basically nothing. ID3 tags say “(promotional copy only!)”. Is it real? It definitely sounds _very_ real. The rip also includes 12(!) silence only tracks and a hidden track (7:45 long).
However did these tracks they sound beautiful. To review it a little bit, i would say BoC went back to their more melodic times with only a few “backward-playing encrypted” stuff.

  49. justin  |   Posted on Aug 22nd, 2005

    fake. it’s freescha.

  50. Hi,

Someone just bashed me for stealing a Boards of Canada record, then pointed me to this website. I didn’t do that, and have no need or desire to do so.

Yes, I make a zine, “Tric”, but again, the only music I encode is my own homemade tracks.

It’s a wide world, folks, so don’t make assumptions. Some of us have less common names than others, but Grabowski is a fairly common Polish name. Also, please don’t contact me if you’re looking to argue.

    Love,
    The (other?) Casey Grabowski

  51. a leak by mid september???

    hope so….

  52. dave  |   Posted on Aug 23rd, 2005

this rubbish its definetly not BoC for fucks sake..

  53. Mrs.Grabowski  |   Posted on Aug 23rd, 2005

I usually do not have any interest or desire to be involved in all this nerdy-ness, yet this time I felt it is necessary. The Casey Grabowski you keep referencing who is the founder of Tric and other bands is not your culprit. For Christ sake who puts their real name on something like that. Regardless I thought it was funny at first, but now I feel it is becoming slanderous. If it continues the family intends to retain representation. We are adults and don’t have time to have untruths on the internet or anywhere for that matter. How do I say this nicely: we don’t give a shit about this band and could care less about their music. We only care how we are represented and if the false comparisons continue we will have to look towards a potential lawsuit.
    thank you in advance.

  54. Mike  |   Posted on Aug 23rd, 2005

Ha, a lawsuit over some “slanderous” talk on what isn’t even really a message board? Okay, so someone’s name was mentioned who clearly isn’t involved, who cares? Like you, I “don’t give a shit,” so get off your high-horse and quit pretending your almighty reputation has been besmirched. Apparently you don’t have time for absolutely meaningless “untruths” (also known as THE INTERNET), yet you do have time to file legal suit over them. Hmm. Lose the ego. And get a life.

  55. poop  |   Posted on Aug 23rd, 2005

why not stop talking about stupid bullshit and focus on the new album for shits’ sake!!! can anybody that has heard it elaborate on the sound???

  56. yeah……focus on whats important..the new album

  57. haha  |   Posted on Aug 23rd, 2005

  58. putain  |   Posted on Aug 24th, 2005

come on, how many casey grabowskis could there be out there that make music that sounds like imitation boc? fess up, grabowski. and tell your mom that i owe her $5 for last night.

  59. Alex  |   Posted on Aug 24th, 2005

I heard the album, a friend of mine came up with this (from the internet)and well… Not as good as I would think. It sounds more like Twoism and early albums. I don’t know if what I heard was the final mix but there is definitly less samples and songs are a lot less complex. I’m a little bit deceived. I don’t know how to express this. Keyboard is slow, there is few layers of sound. Emotion is still good but the album sounds like a debutant album. The technical, conceptual and emotional aspects of Geogaddi and Music has the Right to Children, that were incredible, seems to be lost and the band sems to find another sound. I only listened to it once so my opinion is subject to change but the album is definitly lower quality than I expected from these masters. A good album, but not for Boards of Canada. Or maybe I just lost their trail ant can’t follow them anymore in their musical trip. You will judge…

  60. wtfmate  |   Posted on Aug 24th, 2005

alex, you didn’t hear the album. so… calm down. what you heard was either some random casey grabowski bullshit, freescha, or various tracks from the ‘old tunes’ cassettes. did you even read the other posts here?

  61. Rippington Sinclair  |   Posted on Aug 24th, 2005

boards of canada wonderful fellows there new album is like a swan dancing in the dust. casey grabowski his lightly feathered name dragged through the legal system while mommy wails in the background “no hes not my son!! end the injustice!!” to the amusement of everyone maw grabowski is unmasked as the culprit and in a final act of wanton disregard for the due course of the legal system she sighs “i would have got away with it too if it wasnt for you pesky internerds” Alternate Scenario: Mike And Marcus Grabowski admit the TRUE force behind their music.Little Casey Smiles From The Turnstiles as Mommy Programs in a poignant ambient patch and adds a hip hop esque beat followed by some recordings of casey “aged five” reading the alphabet backwards.Album goes platinum and order is restored to the universe.By the way legal team i am of course not talking about the casey grabowski who is the founder of such wonderful bands as TRIC (whats that name again?) and who dosent put his own name on fake albums then spreads them around the internet, because that would be just stupid.I am of course reffering to another casey grabowski entirely.

  62. Alex  |   Posted on Aug 24th, 2005

Good to hear that because I was really deceived. I didn’t read the posts so…

  63. The Hoor  |   Posted on Aug 24th, 2005

The Campfire Headphase is on Soulseek. Is this a fake or not? A lot of the tracks r quite short. Ambience is in the air on these tracks. Some of the tracks r good. But im pretty sure its a fake.

Get off the internet you boards of canada music speculation geeks, none of the leaks will be real

  69. Casey Grabowski  |   Posted on Aug 24th, 2005

i am the real boards of canada, so dont think about making any sudden moves… i have you all where i want you to be… right in my back pocket where i keep my cell phone, and breath fresheners for when i meet young ladies (when my mom isn’t on my back)!

  70. you guys are a riot…. have some fuckin patience and go play cricket or something.

  71. By the way the cover looks like someone shot up the Predator.

  72. Went to the NYC release party. One word: GUITARS.

  73. could you elaborate on that at all, steve???

  74. Papa Grabowski  |   Posted on Aug 26th, 2005

Casey, get to bed now before i open a can of whoop-ass!

  75. e_tom  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2005

  76. francis o.  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2005

i was at the nyc party, and what i could gather through the NOISE in the place was that the album is kind of slow-poppy. pretty guitary in places in the vein of the recent remixes they’ve done. a couple of the tracks are really electro’ey like old boc too. theres one song with like a 5 or a 7 chord progression that seemed upside-down somehow, it just blew me away.

  77. Anonymous  |   Posted on Aug 30th, 2005

The album is already out on the black market. I could’nt hold myself from downloading this. Impossible. But, I most def. will buy this album, want to support my favourite artists. Maybe twice. First mp3 then CD. Actually think it’s a shame it’s released already, when it does not start selling until october.

  78. Sil Wheatly  |   Posted on Aug 30th, 2005

This is the best. Internet ever!

  79. Anonymous  |   Posted on Aug 31st, 2005

If the album, called The Campfire Headphase, that I downloaded from Soulseek is a fake, then I would love to find out who did it. Cause it’s a great album. I have now listened to it 4 times. The first time I listened, it was a bit disappointing. But after a couple of listens, it really grows on you. I think this whole theory about it being a fake is like: -”HAHA! You thought you listened to BoC! But it was really created by a monkey! A chimpanzee! Your so stupid, thinking this was good!”
It’s close to impossible to make a better album then Music Has The Right To Children, so I didn’t expect that. And you should’nt either. But this is a minimum 4 out of 5 stars album. Fake or not. You just have to drop the expectations and pre-judgments on how you want BoC to be. Let them deside and you follow, if you have the intelligence to do it.

  80. Nathan  |   Posted on Aug 31st, 2005

The version circulating on soulseek is in actual fact very old BoC songs. For instance ‘satellite anthem icarus’ is ‘seward leaf’, ‘peacock tail’ is ‘circle’ and ‘dayvan cowboy’ is ‘trillions’.

So it is not time to judge yet, I am very hopeful that this will turn out to be another great album from the boys.

  82. Yeah, old tracks but nice ones, most of them are boc remixes, and tracks you can get on “a few old tunes”. By the way, the fake “hey saturday sun”, 3:39, I’ve already listened to it somewhere… love it :)

  83. Goddamn it there WAS NO NY RELEASE PARTY, I am one of about 11 people that have heard the new BOC. Believe me, anyone that says they have heard the album hasnt, since I know everyone who has listened to it and they arent “unimpressed” with it in any way, shape, or form. And no, there wont be ANY internet leaks, it’s all in very good hands and isnt going anywhere. Hell, dont even believe me, dont believe anything you hear about it until you have the actual cd, or you get the preview.

  84. the fake ones going around on slsk are old tunes or freescha. Freescha are great. Buy there stuff if you can find it.

    New BoC cant wait

The new BoC out as an advance .mp3 release :) Anyways, will buy the cd in october !

  87. shimmz  |   Posted on Sep 1st, 2005

Boards Of Canada’s new record moves away from the complicated miasma of samples previously employed on Geogaddi and brings their classic Hi-Scores sound to the fore. A much more Hip Hop flavored production complete with booty bass and the deepest beats known to man coupled with wobbly synths, acoustic guitar and lots and lots of psychedelic flutes! Hold your breath it’s worth it!

  88. glib  |   Posted on Sep 2nd, 2005

i knew mike an marcus from when they were in highschool and they played with chris horne and a few others. heard the new album- its all that its cracked up to be. the talk about guitars is definately true kind of organic drumkit sounds… like live drumming meets acoustic guitars ala “wouldn?t you like to be free?” but more refined and subliminal

  89. bocseptember  |   Posted on Sep 2nd, 2005

First of all, there are no guitars. It’s more experimental, a bit like Autechre and 3tronik for those who knows (www.sutemos.net). It has nothing to do with other boc albums, they changed everything, other sound. You’ll be very very very surprised. First listen, I didn’t like it (the second track, after the intro, really sucks, but then, the album becomes better).
Second and third listen, the album growns on you.
They have do what they want and not what fans want. The beggining of the track Sherbert Head is the one who looks like classical boc, but it becomes more experimental then. So, don’w wait to listen a new classical boc, but a new boc with new sound and other style.

I forgot, you can found it on network but with a bad sound (even if it’s encoded at 320k). Soon, you will find better sound versions.
So, listen to it and decide to buy it or not in october.

  91. bocseptember  |   Posted on Sep 2nd, 2005

Well… listening to it for the forth time… and more I listen to it, more I think it’s again a FAKE ! Thought that was the real one because released by a serious mp3 groupe but…
HOPE THAT IS NOT THE TRUE ABLUM BECAUSE IT REALLY SUCKS HAHAHAHAHAH ! This is really shit, every album of boards of canada is better than this crap :) If it’s the real album, so boc is dead. I prefer to wait until 3 september and buy the track on bleep, then, if it’s the same as this one… oh my god… NOOOOOOOOOOOO ! Hope it’s a fake… hope it’s a fake… hope it’s a fake :) )

  92. dude, your soooooo behind, we knew that was a fake weeks ago, dumbass

  93. Sweet Fancy Moses !

Deep relief on finding this thread and the revalation that the current campfire headphase torrent is a fake. A friend burnt me a copy and i rushed honme to listen to it in hushed reverence only to hear the weakest MSP/Abelton/Pluggo IDM i’d heard in along while (especially the 20 minute track in the middle). I couldn’t belive my ears ; where were the bent and burnt meadow melodies, the slurred cough syrup beats, the afterglow rushes ? I droploaded tracks to friends to see what they thought. we were all dismayed but now I see the folly of my doubt : the forest warriors will not fail us. They can’t.
