Brooklyn quintet Lucius made their name in part on the strength of a flashy stage show in which the leading ladies harmonize powerfully while looking like each other’s mirror image. It’s an electrifying show that’s won the approval of collaborators Mavis Staples, Tweedy, and the Rentals, but don’t let those wildly entertaining performances trick you into thinking Lucius let the showmanship get in the way of the music. The group’s acoustic cover of My Morning Jacket’s Circuital ballad “Wonderful,” recorded live at Los Angeles radio station KCSN, dispels any such notions. The band puts their own stamp on the tune by infusing it with their trademark harmonies and subtly beautiful guitar flourishes, then kick into gear for a big finish. “I will never grow older,” they sing, “at least not in my mind.” It will be included in the deluxe reissue of Lucius’ Wildewoman next month, but you can hear it below right now.
