Stevie Wonder Is Producing An Underground Railroad Miniseries
According to Deadline, NBC has just given the greenlight to a Stevie Wonder-produced miniseries about the Underground Railroad called Freedom Run. The series is based on Betty DeRamus’ book Forbidden Fruit: Love Stories From The Underground Railroad, and will focus on three couples “who risked everything to be together, fighting for love in a time of hate.” The novel will also be developed into a Broadway musical, which Wonder is expected to write the score for. “We’re increasingly looking for projects that qualify as television events and these harrowing true stories of courageous young men and women who found love, in spite of the heinousness of slavery, certainly does that,” NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt said. Next month, Wonder will be honored with a tribute concert featuring Chris Martin, Janelle Monáe, and Willie Nelson that will air on CBS.
