Everyone’s off to Miami for the MTV Awards. But I’ve got more important things to do, like blog and drink coffee and give you links to videos that aren’t nominated for any VMAs:

  • Jakob from CollegeHumor made his own video to one of my favorite Aloha songs.

There are dancing girls in it and a cameo from Aloha drummer Cale Parks. Watch: .WMV | .MOV

  • Beck’s done many a great music video. In fact, dude’s getting a RESFest Retrospective soon. I’m digging the new clip for “Girl” — it’s MAD Magazine come to life. Watch here.

  • This reader was watching videos at the crack of dawn and just HAD TO SHARE.

Subject: here is the fucking fantastic new lcd soundsystem video

    DW_lcd_tribs_L.MOV

  • And finally, (since they’re the “Best Band On The Planet”?) here’s that dramatic Green Day video everyone’s talkin’ ’bout. Watch: .ASX

Fun fact: Nickelodeon aired a music video for the first time this week. It was the White Stripes’ “My Doorbell.” (UPDATE: I read that on Yahoo! Apparently it’s wrong; Nick used to show videos all the time. Hey, anyone remember Pinwheel? Or Today’s Special … with the dude with the hat?)

Seen any good videos? Post links in the comments.

    1. that Aloha video would be better if a guy in a bear suit jumped out an tackled those dancers.

    2. or a real bear, but wearing running shorts and a headband.

    3. bearluver  |   Posted on Aug 26th, 2005

or a bear wearing a green day t-shirt roaring green day is the bestest band ever

    4. Nick used to play videos every so often back in the day.

    5. Nicccccccole  |   Posted on Aug 26th, 2005

OK Go’s new video is terribly charming. Synchronized dancing in their backyard? Yes, please!

    6. Yeah, diz is right. Nick actually had their own music video show way back in the day.

    7. the new Oasis video for “Importance of Being Idle” is pretty good, it’s got Rhys Ifans in it, the new Elbow video for “Forget Myself” is quite good too. Trying to find the new Doves vid for “Sky Starts Falling”…

    9. Yeah scott, Nickelodeon definitely had a video show. I wanna say it was called Nick Rocks or something like that. This was back when programming was divided between kid stuff in the morning and teenage stuff in the afternoons, probably around the same time Spock had that movie review show.

    10. pablo  |   Posted on Aug 26th, 2005

      Diz n Joey:
Didn’t Nick used to show vids on a show called “PopClips” a couple of years before MTV? And maybe Nick even had another name then. I can remember vids for “Pop Music”, “The Game” (Queen), “Walking on the Moon”, and some Kim Carnes song. (I’m old).

aw, come on, what else would you do at fivesomething in the morning?

    13. Found this really cool video by the electronic group Mint Royale:

      http://www.video-c.co.uk/micrositedisplay.asp?vidref=mint003

It features breakdancing cardboard boxes! How can you go wrong?

    14. Architecture In Helsinki’s Do the Whirlwind. Very fun.

      http://www.architectureinhelsinki.com/

    15. Don’t have a link, but the video for Franz Ferdinand’s “Do You Want To” is surprisingly funny. Lots of good jabs at iconic works of modern and contemporary art. The video’s a hell of a lot better than the song.

    16. Nickelodeon’s video show was, in fact, “Nick
Rocks.” I sent probably 100 requests (written on index cards) for Herbie Hancock’s “Rockit,” still one of my favorite videos of all time. Then, it got taken over by the Johns from TMBG–and I started losing interest.

Anyone seen the video for Clor’s “Good Stuff”? Egad.

      http://marathonpacks.blogspot.com/2005/08/clor-good-stuff-video.html

    17. “Today’s Special” was the one where they all worked at a department store and had to turn back into mannequins when people arrived right?

    18. That’s amazing, Russ!!!!!! OK, here goes:

      Mr. Wizard
DangerMouse (which was just released on DVD)
      Belle and Sebastian (the cartoon)
      The Little Prince (the cartoon)
Don’t Just Sit There (kid-hosted variety show, once had Terry Gilliam as a guest)

…anyone? I’m slowly working my way back to the womb, here.

    19. …I just remembered that I went to undergrad with the little Asian girl from “You Can’t Do That on Television” (sic?). Is that the name of the show with Alanis Morrisette and the green slime?

Is this thread turning into “I Love the 80′s, Nickelodeon version?”

    20. Yes, Eric (to all of your questions).
Although on “Today’s Special” somebody had to say “Hocus Pocus Ala-madocus” to get Jeff to turn from mannequin to human. That was a hot show- Sharon, Lois and Bram even had a spin-off from it.

    21. PissFenders  |   Posted on Aug 26th, 2005

ok, so what, does the guy get his ass shot off at the end of the Green Day video or what?!?!?

    22. derek  |   Posted on Aug 26th, 2005

you gotta check out Single Frame’s latest, “Exact Copy in the Basement”

      http://www.superalright.com/work/movs/exactCopy_Large.html

cool manequins with digital video faces and weirdness like that

    23. Jack Goff  |   Posted on Aug 26th, 2005

I remember just discovering masturbation to the black chick on Today’s Special. Ah, memories. Back in the day, that was the only decent porn us kids had.

    24. Billy K  |   Posted on Aug 26th, 2005

Can’t believe no one has said this yet, so I’ll go ahead:

The girl on the rooftop is adorable.

      There. I said it.

    25. derek  |   Posted on Aug 26th, 2005

yes sir.. i’ll second that. she is hot! and where was the drummer from aloha?

    26. Nothing was better than Nick Rocks. It was right after DangerMouse. They could only play 4-5 videos because it was such a short show. I have this one show stuck in my head:

      (1) A-Ha: Take on Me (we’re all cartoons. or real.)

      (2) Starship: Sara (storms were brewing in her eyes on a tire swing)

      (3) Whitney Houston: How Will I Know? (you’ll know when you’re wandering around jackson-pollack painted walls with dudes chasing you)

      (4) Starship: We Built This City (yes, yes you did).

I can almost see each of those videos in my head in their entirety and feel myself watching it.

TV is very very bad for children.

    27. KillaCam  |   Posted on Aug 26th, 2005

hey i know that girl on the rooftop! she’s pretty cool too!

    28. Justin  |   Posted on Aug 26th, 2005

“Everyone” is off to the VMAs? Come on, Scott, you’re venturing into Pauline Kael, “everyone I know voted for McGovern so he must have won” territory. ;)

    29. James  |   Posted on Aug 26th, 2005

Apparently, R.E.M. made an early live appearance circa 1984 (even fielding questions from kids!) on “Nick Rocks.” I’ve never seen the footage, but several books on the band I’ve read refer to it. I guess the clip must circulate among collectors somewhere.

    30. James  |   Posted on Aug 26th, 2005

er, that should be “early television appearance”

    31. REM made an early appearance on Livewire, which was a Phil Donahue-like talk show for kids. Supposedly the Beastie Boys were in the audience that day.

      I’m a nerd.

    32. calliwell  |   Posted on Aug 26th, 2005

Oh wow…you guys got Today’s Special? I thought that it was strictly Canadian…

      LCD Soundsystem is damn addictive.

    33. I second the opinion of Russell that Carpark North’s video for “Human” is good. Dont know anything about the band, but it’s a well-made video.

    34. the Of Montreal video for Wraith Pinned to the Mist is also in RESfest and its also sweet:

    35. Peck  |   Posted on Aug 26th, 2005

The Green Day video is one of the most hilariously melodramatic things I’ve ever seen. The louder the people yelled, the louder I laughed.

And Ok Go’s new vid is excellent.

    36. The drummer for Aloha was the guy playing with the neon bowling pin looking thingies. I saw them play a number of times as I went to college with a few of them.

No, I don’t think that association makes me cool.

    37. paris h.  |   Posted on Aug 26th, 2005

what about the r kelly joint…that’s hot yo for realz

    38. Shaun  |   Posted on Aug 26th, 2005

Have you heard the original version of “You’ve Escaped?” It’s on the 7-inch of “Boys In The Bathtub.” It’s way better than this version.

    39. Todays Special was great! The guy who created/directed it taught me a couple of classes in school (Ryerson TV arts program), and apparently it’s coming out on DVD soon. Crazy that anybody here even remembers it…

    40. elissa  |   Posted on Aug 26th, 2005

oh my gosh, billy elliot is in the green day vid!

    41. John  |   Posted on Aug 26th, 2005

Green Day video is utter laughable. What’s amazing is that so many people are acribing such genius to such thin material.

    42. I think the MU video made my brain explode.

    43. John  |   Posted on Aug 26th, 2005

That LCD Soundsystem is fucking fabulous. One of the best of the year

I’m enjoying so much Mew’s “Special” directed by Martin de Thura (they’re from Denmark) and the song is great too.

    44. i’m digging the cute new video by zolof the rock and roll destroyer.

i used to think green day were douche bags…..now i’m certain.

    46. Richard  |   Posted on Aug 27th, 2005

For years I’ve had “hocus pocus ala-ma-docus” running through my subconcious, sneaking into my day to day speak at the oddest times.

      And now I know why.

    47. chris  |   Posted on Aug 27th, 2005

i remember seeing the video for “we’re all dudes” by less than jake on nickelodeon back around the time that good burger came out.

what a sweet movie that was, huh?

    48. ryan  |   Posted on Aug 27th, 2005

Nick used to show They Might Be Giants videos all the time.

    49. “nobody move, nobody get hurt” by we are scientists

    50. elise  |   Posted on Aug 27th, 2005

i remember pinwheel: plus and minus puppet things and some weird little claymation figurines that used to run around with big hats hiding their faces with strange music playing.

    51. dave  |   Posted on Aug 28th, 2005

that greenday video makes me want to break something

    53. specialj  |   Posted on Aug 28th, 2005

Best thing on nick was The Adventures of Pete and Pete. plenty of fun musician cameos AND a supervillian named Papercut

    54. amber  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2005

off topic kinda, but over the weekend i was talking with some friends about old tv shows like today’s special…small wonder etc.

there was this show with this blonde teenage girl, and her dad lived in outerspace or something…regardless she could talk to him because his voice came out of this crazy ice cube looking thing that opened up and would change colors when he talked.
also when she pressed her index fingers together, she could freeze time.

does anyone remember the name of this show?!?!?!

    55. greg  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2005

      OUT OF THIS WORLD!

    56. TV Junkie  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2005

I loved watching “Out Of This World” when I was a kid! The girl’s name on the show was Evie and she had her fat Uncle Beano and that vaguely gay neighbor Buzz. It used to come on right before “Small Wonder” and after “My Secret Identity” where I lived. By the way, anyone else remember My Secret Identity? It starred Jerry O’Connell as a kid obsessed with comic books and then he somehow got super powers or something. I just remember that he was able to fly by using 2 aerosol cans as jet propellers. My sister would get pissed off because I’d use up her AquaNet hairspray doing the same trick around the house. AquaNet!

Oh yeah, Adventures of Pete and Pete was an amazing show and they recently released the complete 1st season with shorts on DVD as a 2-disc set. Picked it up a month ago and have been loving it since!

    57. Video for female electronica trio Midaircondo – track “Serenade”…

    58. ::looks at the dancing rootop girl::

      I like her shoes.
I like all of their shoes.
      Them, too.
