Vinyl Williams – “World Soul” (Stereogum Premiere)
For lack of a more all-encompassing term, let’s call Lionel “Vinyl” Williams an L.A. indie-pop dude. That title is much too reductive because his sound employs elements of New Wave, shoegaze, electro, psych-rock, and mainstream pop. Williams recently signed with Toro Y Moi’s Company Records and is set to release his next LP, Into, in late July. Lead single “World Soul” is a clinic on layering synths and electro atmospheric sounds. Feathery whispers hover low in the mix under thumping drums, heavily reverbed guitars, and the aforementioned digital magnificence to culminate into something even the rhythmically challenged can dance to.
