The Chills – “Warm Waveform” (Stereogum Premiere)
“With the touch of your hand, I felt my flesh go all electric,” croons Martin Phillipps smokily above layers of somber bass and soft, chiming guitars. The boundaries between the light and dark, sharp and gauzy, luminous and hazy are challenged in New Zealand dignitaries the Chills’ latest Silver Bullets single, “Warm Waveform.” The band, featuring a rotating lineup and spanning a thirty-year long career with Phillipps at its consistent core, have been forerunners of the New Zealand indie scene. Their eclectic mix of complex, doomed verses are accompanied by somber tones and stuttering percussion, Phillipps’ lyrics in the track resonating subtle lust and love: “In the blink of the night, you thawed my winter with your dawn.”Listen below.
