they did the same thing up here when the rolling stones released something exclusively through best buy. even though they’re the largest music chain in canada, pulling stock has no impact on the labels, yet they keep doing it for some reason…
“Banned in Canada” is an overstatement, since HMV isn’t the only retailer in Canada.
At least this hasn’t yet been called censorship. I’m sure some will. Always happens.
Isn’t all this shit just a little much? Can’t we all be grown up anymore and realize that if Bob Dylan, or his label, want to do something like sell his record at a national coffee shop, that it is not grounds (no pun intended) for retailers to go and remove his albums from their shelves? For Christ sake the guy is the poet laureate of our age. He has penned some of the greatest material I have ever heard. It strikes me as quite funny the selective morality of these chain store retailers. Especially since their bread and butter are artists like Brittney Spears and Slipknot. If they sold this record at a baby blender store I’d still buy it. When it comes down to it all this ranting about Starbucks is a little misguided in my opinion. Okay, so the place is a bit overexposed (that is an understatement if you live in NYC), but the fact is that they have kinder labor policies with their growers and with their staff than say your Maxwellhouse or Folgers. But I know uninformed ranting and raving is more en Vogue than yoga so go ahead and rant. I’ll be sipping my grande latte listening to Bob.
