Littler – “Of Wandering” (Stereogum Premiere)
All the songs we’ve heard from Littler’s upcoming debut, Of Wandering — “Somewhere Else,” “Not My Market,” “Slippery” — have been about love complications in miniature, connections spread out in concentric circles that never seem to match up. The title track follows another transient narrative as Madeline Meyer undertones out how you can be looking right into someone’s eyes and feel a thousand miles away, and how when you actually are a thousand miles away, there’s nowhere else you’d rather be than staring into someone’s eyes. She plays with the idea of semantics (“Objects are just things/ Places are just land”), and then gets mad when she realizes that neither of those equations are true, and it’s the connections we forge with those things that make them matter and that they shouldn’t be so easily discarded: “I left them/ Some idiot told me ‘change is good’ — well, fuck you.” It’s a fight between intimacy and running the other way, and both come with their fair share of problems: “I tried to do the opposite of the things that brought me down, but I’m not any happier.” Wandering or alone? Or maybe there’s something else. Listen below.
