Sat. Nite Duets – “St. Yuppie” (Stereogum Premiere)
Since their start in 2009, Sat. Nite Duets have been making the sort of idiosyncratic, heartfelt rock music that inspires a devoted cult following in their home base of Wisconsin. Air Guitar, their followup to 2013’s Electric Manland, is their most accomplished yet, and sees each of the band’s six members taking a whack at songwriting, a tradition established and solidified over their most recent records. “St. Yuppie,” the album’s lead single, was written by guitarist Ben Gucciardi, who also sings on the track with a deadpan, tongue-in-cheek wit: “I am the patron saint of young professionals,” he starts off. “I’m in love with you, everything you do…” What follows is a vividly-imagined tapping at heaven’s gate, complete with requisite “hallelu”‘s and scratchily spoken asides. Sat. Nite Duets’ melodic prowess are firmly in place as they harmonize through deliciously hedonistic lines like “As you fade from the grave to the rave, you will shake the ass that’s behind you.” Listen below.
