Lion Babe – “Endless Summer” (Stereogum Premiere)
Lion Babe have yet to disappoint. They had some excellent buzz-inducing singles, mesmerizing videos, a stellar showing on their self-titled introductory EP a couple years, and Begin was solid. The NYC soul duo is gearing up to drop a new mixtape, Sun Joint, just four months after releasing their album.
The first offering from the tape is a breezy warm-weather jaunt aptly titled “Endless Summer.” A funky bass line, quick, intricate claps, waves crashing on the shore, and bouncy synths embody the feeling of your first day on the beach after waiting for summer for what feels like far too long. Lion-maned songstress Jillian Hervey sings of freedom, finally shaking off a relationship that troubled her for too long just in time for sun and fun. She sings “When I die I’ll know I did it my way/ I speak goodbye, the end of all the heartache” just before the irresistible melody of the hook comes in. If you’re late starting your beach playlist this is the perfect song to kick it off. Listen.
