The Afghan Whigs – “Regret” (New Order Cover)
The Afghan Whigs are among our greatest interpreters of other people’s songs; the soul-rock band has spent decades leaving a trail of intense, smoky soul-rock cover versions behind them. Right now, the members of the band are planning to perform their 1996 album Black Love in full at a pair of all-star shows, both benefits for cancer-stricken guitarist Dave Rosser. They’re also planning to release a deluxe reissue of Black Love, and that reissue will include, as a bonus, their version of New Order’s 1993 synthpop classic “Regret.” The Afghan Whigs version of the song is an almost entirely solo-piano track from frontman Greg Dulli, and he’s transformed it into one hell of a brood session. Check it out below.
The 20th-anniversary edition of Black Love is out 11/25 via Rhino worldwide and Mute in the UK.
