Mike Patton, of Faith No More, Fantomas, and Mr. Bungle (among others) tried to sell his old G4 with a signed legend that says “Thank You For Letting Me Fuck Your Dad”. Say what you will about the mind behind kinda-sorta inventing rap-rock (along with RHCP, and, more importantly, Run DMC) but $1,500 for an old G4 makes him look pretty smart. (via Metafilter)

the rap-rock thing was invented by The Urban Dance Squad, namechecked by all those who came after and were mentioned by you.
of course the others were majorly important in popularizing it.
UDS was great, where as most rap-rock is awful, so they didn’t really invent it, if you ask me (which you didn’t). Mike Patton is a terrific musician and a hilarious dude who creates music more interesting that most indie rockers, probably myself included, are capable of listening to. He’s got a huge following so I don’t think it’s really a matter of him needing money or attention as much as it is him being ridiculous for its own sake.
True, Run-D.M.C. usually gets the credit for inventing the genre with 1986′s “Walk This Way.” And Urban Dance Squad’s two early Nineties albums (Mental Floss for the Globe and Life ‘n Perspective of a Genuine Crossover) sound a lot like what we think of as rapcore today.
But don’t forget that the Beastie Boys’ first hit, back in 1985, was “She’s On It,” which sampled AC/DC’s “Back in Black.” And from that same year, Faith No More’s “We Care a Lot.” Plus, the Red Hot Chili Peppers occasionally fooled around with quasi-rap during that same period.
I was actually thinking of “King of Rock” as Run DMC’s first rap-rock.

He wasn’t selling an iMac G4. From the picture, it appeared to be a G4 tower, and those machines were sold with a range of processor specs.
What about Pop Will Eat Itself?
the pop view is correct about Faith No More’s We Care A Lot coming out in ’85, but it was with Chuck Mosley on vocals, Patton didn’t join the band until ’88, in time for the Real Thing, which featured ‘Epic’ the song which probably more than anything got them stuck with the rap-rock progenitor tag. Which is unfortunate considering Patton and the rest of the band are all incredible, versatile musicians who put out some really intriguing stuff.
