Claire George – “Lonely Or Alone”

Just last week, indie-pop newcomer Claire George announced her EP Bodies Of Water and shared the ghostly pop ballad “Orbits.” Her solo debut is out next Friday via Cascine, and today she’s dropping its second and final single “Lonely Or Alone.”

“Orbits” had an isolated, yearning loneliness, but “Lonely Or Alone” channels a more pervasive solitude. It aches, trying to break free of the lyrics’ exile and otherness. “I know you’ve been hurt/ Flightless bird you always were/ Treated like a fish out of water,” George sweetly whispers. The chorus doesn’t release the tension; rather, it swells and buzzes only to shrink back down. As the track ends, she digs into the question, “Are you lonely or are you just alone?” It’s hard to tell which is better.
