Sorry, you’re on your own with that last one. But it’s pretty awesome if you can find it (thanks anonymous e-mailer). Jack White knows a great pop tune when he hears one, even if it conjures images of Calgary siblings’ horrible haircuts.

UPDATE: Thanks Dodge for the link:
Jose Gonzalez – “Love Will Tear Us Apart” (Joy Division)

  1. Well, Jack White’s certainly got the voice for that particular song.
    “I said pleeease, please don’t insist…”

  2. I really wanna hear that Stripes’ Walking With A Ghost, as it is a damn, damn good pop tune. The mashup of that song with Mylo floating around isn’t half bad either.

  3. I dont know where you can download the white stripes walking with a ghost, but if you listen to their show that is on NPR.ORG’s All Songs Considered, they play it somewhere in the middle of the set. they also do rated x in that show.

  4. you can walk on over to rapidshare and get it:

go away I hate you go away I hate you go away I hate you go away I hate you go away I hate you go away I hate you go away I hate you go away I hate you go away I hate you go away I hate you
go away I hate you go away I hate you go away I hate you go away I hate you go away I hate you go away I hate you

  6. nice to see that banalamaramadan hates Scott, too.

anyway, ILM has the Stripes cover in this thread:

Wow, Jack White’s version of Walking with a Ghost is painful. I can’t believe he bothered to record that and I can’t believe I prefer listening to Tegan & Sara.

  10. I heard the npr show mentioned above and thought for sure they were going to segue into their own tune about ghosts from the new album. no such luck. don’t forget about our covers! http://www.myspace.com/covermebadd

  11. I’ve got an entire covers podcast continuing through the weekend, and a cheap prize for whoever can guess all the tracks:

    http://www.marathonpacks.com/2005/10/marathonpacks-podcast-3.html

  12. My ears just exploded. wow, I didnt think it was possible to destroy that song, but somehow jack white managed to. Oh the humanity.

  13. Why is a guy singing that Frida cover? First Jack White mangles Tegan and Sara, now this. Bad day for covers.

  14. seriously marathonpacks. don’t you think it’s a little cheap to be advertising on someone else’s blog? i know there isn’t any official blog etiquette to speak of, but i think plugging your own thing is a little inappropriate. just let your comments and the link do the talking.

  15. hey b are you jealous or something? The man has in my opinion the best music blog that I have ever come across. He knows tons about music and can write the best music reviews in the blogosphere. You may learn something by visiting his blog. Why don’t you comment on the post instead of railing on someone who is joining in the spirit of the post and noting that he has recently put up a bunch of music covers on his site? Isn’t that what blogging is about?
BTW, I got a post up that has a cool cover of the Stones Paint It Black by Firewater. What do you think of that b?

  16. i think  |   Posted on Oct 28th, 2005

B can suck a D. marathonpacks kicks ass.

  17. It’s also on my site. I know five other people already chimed in, but what the hell.

Oh, ouch…White Stripes version of Tegan & Sara’s song has the worst drumming I’ve heard in a very very long time.

marathonpacks was doing a stereogum a favor when he linked here.

  20. http://fadedyouth.blogspot.com is the hottest website

  21. i mean no disrespect to marathonpacks, d. i agree that the blog is excellent. my point was simply (and it was unfair to address it specifically to marathonpacks. i apologize.) is that: one’s comments and url link should suffice as an advertisement.

  22. one of the great things about a site like Sterogum that actually gets a lot of traffic is that the comments section exists at all. when major corporations start their own copycat blogs (msnbc, microsoft or yahoo) you can bet they won’t let people comment

so for that reason alon I for one won’t be visiting the self promoting blogger above.

  23. Craig, your comment contradicts itself and does not make sense. because we can comment is even more the reason to ‘promote’ your site. blogging is about sharing ideas and visiting other people sites and hearing what others think. if the big corporations take over then we lost that right to share and ‘promote’. doesn’t make sense what you said.

And b, thanks for the follow up and for doing so in a mature respectful manner!

  24. erin  |   Posted on Oct 29th, 2005

Oh god… that is the worst cover i’ve ever heard. :(

    hey matts -

its funny that you asked ‘why is a guy singing’ the frida song – it didn’t occur to me that this is a bad thing for a cover version. it begs the question: what elements of a “good” cover need to remain faithful to the original ,versus what are “ok” to alter?

to me, singer gender is totally up for grabs. as is arrangement, and tempo. but the lyrics are sacred. one of my favorite covers is the white stripes version of dolly parton’s “jolene” (the sisters of mercy also covered this). so maybe i even like covers *better* when the singer is the opposite gender!

  26. This new site is in beta, but once done it will let you upload your MP3 library and then play it with any wired device!

  27. I love that Calexico version. I even posted it on my Tokyo Blog, check it out. I have loads of Japanese Indies.

  28. The Brad Mehldau Trio and Calexico versions are really beautiful. Thank you very much for sharing these tracks !!(and thank you very much for the link ;-) )

  29. you think jack white knows he’s playing the wrong damn chord on that song? not to be a tegan and sara trainspotter, but i’m pretty sure that first chord on the verses is minor.

    hating the white stripes still,
    spinsouth

  30. David  |   Posted on Oct 30th, 2005

John Peel says your hatred is misplaced, spinsouth!

  31. hey, can i join the white stripes hater bandwagon? Tegan and Sara are mediocre. This version of “Walking with a Ghost” is much better. You are all a bunch of puppets. fyi.

  32. David  |   Posted on Oct 31st, 2005

John Peel’s ghost will haunt you this All Hallow’s Eve, Haterade!

  33. that cover is pretty awful. i’m going to stick with the Mylo remix as my favorite.
