“The song doesn’t fit but I want to use it.” I think just about everyone who reads this site can sympathize with that line from The Tah-Dahs “Mix Tape = Love”. They’re kind of too cute to live- “I’d want to move to Rome and wouldn’t that be Romeantic [sic]” is a line in the first track- but this, here, is for anyone that likes their guitar pop self-consciously fun. Or ironic couples that “loke” each other.

The Tah-Dahs – “Mix Tape = Love” (MP3 link removed)

“I hope there’s not a song that some boy put on the last/or a turgid folk number that you fast forward past…”: what’re the most-used snob-in-love tracks? YLT’s “Autumn Sweater” and Buzzcocks’ “Why Can’t I Touch It”?

  2. kyle  |   Posted on Nov 4th, 2005

i’ve always used these as staples:

beefheart – her eyes are a blue million miles
richard hell & the voidoids – i’m your man
red house painters – summer dress

  3. kyle  |   Posted on Nov 4th, 2005

  4. maura  |   Posted on Nov 4th, 2005

their album cover is a rip-off of a somewhat famous painting, tho i can’t remember whom it is by … anyone know? i want to say magritte.

also, snob in love song: thirteen by big star

    Good call Maura!

  7. Massive Attack’s Protection and Lou Reed’s Beautiful Day are staples of my mixtapes, but they’re probably more cheesy than snobish (although most girls I date aren’t snobs, so I guess that works).

  8. yeah, good catch! they don’t credit ‘em on the liner notes, either. they have a note about how bogus germophobia has eliminated ball pits at Chuck E. Cheese.

  9. Autumn Sweater … Kevin Shield remix!

  10. I like this song a lot. I can’t put my finger on who they remind me of…

  11. Tammie  |   Posted on Nov 4th, 2005

    i love autumn sweater.
it’s definately pavement, spit on a stranger.

  12. It’s not a cover of the Viva Voce song, the lyrics are completely different. Though, I suppose the two of them would go great on a mixtape together, maybe as the first and last song?

  13. Does anyone have a copy of the Viva Voce song? I’ve never heard it.

  14. you earned cool points for posting about the tah dahs. i’ve been a fan of them for awhile. they crack me up when they play live. yay.

Well, I didn’t mean a cover of the Viva Voce song, just the title.

BTW Expatriate just released an EP in Australia called “Lovers le Strange”. Rather good in that tightjoydivisioninterpolish cold that bands seem to be picking up nowadays.

It has almost the EXACT SAME COVER as the Tah Dahs.

Christ! People are worthless. Indie artists are so fucking stupid lately. At the cost of their fans too who seem to know nothing. The painting is by rene magritte and is called “the lovers” it’s extremely personal to him and the fact that they used it on the grounds only that they probably saw it and it “looked cool” is kind of sick. I always see his paintings used in a manner that lacks any sort of original take on it. Surrealist art is fine if used as an influence by blatantly ripping off or copying it is just lazy. I assume their music is similarly copied from other artists. Anyways the reason why it’s ridiculous to use that piece of art is because of how esoteric the material is. The cloth over the lover heads is referenced from when he was a child and his mother drowned herself in a lake, he was told about it then ran to the lake to see his mother being pulled out of the water – with her white dress washed over and covering her face it was the last image he had of his mother. It left a lasting
    impression.

also if you like “the clientele’s” new cover art – might want to check out paul delvaux..another blatant ripoff.

  27. Magritte’s totally abused…I hadn’t thought about it before, but he gets ripped off/referenced all the time.

  28. See also the cover to the Mars Volta’s “Frances the Mute”. But they’re “art rockers”, so it might be a little more excusable.

Regardless of the cover art, I really enjoyed the Tah Dahs song. It might make onto my next mix CD.

I bet MBV’s “Sometimes” gets a lot of mix tape love, particularly after its use in “Lost In Translation”.

  30. Adam  |   Posted on Nov 6th, 2005

I think there is a personal reason they used it, but it’s too personal to mention here.

  31. kelly  |   Posted on Nov 8th, 2005

‘Temptation’ -by Tom Waits for the quiet side and New Order’s ‘Temptation’ for the loud side, or maybe Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’
    version.

“also if you like “the clientele’s” new cover art – might want to check out paul delvaux..another blatant ripoff”

a bit late on this, but exactly how it is a blatent ripoff to pay to license a painting by paul delvaux for use on an album cover?

i mean, it’s stated that this is where the painting comes from on the back cover as well as the liner notes – no one ever said this painting was ‘new’ or wasn’t by delvaux. also, the band have referred to the fact that surrealist painting has heavily inspired their music and that this painting was specifically chosen for echoing the mood of the record.

hey, I know it’s been a while since the release, but does anyone have the lyrics for “mixtape = love”? I can’t find them anywhere… :-(
