Kanye West has been detained and questioned on charges of felony vandalism by LAPD after he lost it on some photogs at LAX this morning. TMZ.com was on the scene obviously:
A still photographer was trying to take pics of Kanye at the American Airlines terminal. According to our guy on the scene, Kanye allegedly confronted the photog and smashed his camera to the ground.
Our photog then began videotaping the scene when Kanye’s assistant grabbed our camera — a struggle ensued and the assistant threw the video camera to the ground, breaking it.
A followup post adds more color:
The cops asked [TMZ cameraman] Erik if he videotaped the incident and Erik said he had. That’s when Kanye lunged toward him and said, “Give me the fu***ng videotape.” Cops had to restrain Kanye as he tried coming at Erik.
TMZ promises to post the video soon, which someone will immediately set to “Love Lockdown” and upload to YouTube. (UPDATE: Here it is.)

I find it funny how these paparazzi always try to play the victim in these situations, when if you actually watch an unbiased video you almost always see them intentionally provoking the celebrity just to get a reaction.

Kanye West (along with Lil Wayne and Jay-Z) is one of the three biggest hip-hop artists in the world right now. And he’s dropping a album in the next two months, featuring a left-turn of a single that debuted closing one of America’s major awards shows.
And he just got arrested.
Are you -really- confused as to why there’d be a lot of reporting on him?
I really couldn’t care less about Kanye West. I’m not a fan of his music. I don’t hate it, I just really don’t care that much about it one way or the other. That said, I think the paparazzi are annoying as all get-out. However, the way to deter them is NOT to pull a stunt like this. First of all, assaulting a human being and/or damaging someone else’s property, unless in defense of self or others, is illegal. Period. “He was provoking me” isn’t an excuse, however much those of us who grew up with snotty little brothers wish it might be. Those who wish to enjoy the privileges of being famous, and particularly who wish to flash around their celebrity as Kanye has been known to do, are going to have to deal with certain disadvantages as well. If you want to be treated like a private citizen, lose the bling, dress neatly but casually in jeans and a t-shirt, don’t respond to the cameras either with a smile and an interview or a scowl and a fist, and pretty soon they’ll get tired of you and move on to somebody more glamorous and interesting.
On the other hand, I do have this to say to the TMZ photog – you’re an idiot. He’d already gone off on one guy for taking his picture, what did you think he was going to do to you? And it’s not as if your camera was already rolling so what the heck . . . you said you didn’t start filming until Kanye was already having his fit. You deserved to have that film confiscated, buddy. If not for violating the (admittedly dubious)privacy of a man who obviously wanted to be left alone, then because you don’t deserve to collect a paycheck until you pass Common Sense 101.
