Faithful reader Mike sent this in, claiming he couldn’t believe it was real. It’s a tough pill to swallow, but Think Progress swears it’s not a parody.

And… it’s not. There’s a campaign underway to get the video played on TRL. As for the song itself, it sounds like an alternate version of “We Didn’t Start The Fire” sung by a musical Jeff Gannon that occupies the same universe as the Anti-Smoosh. It’s not even the song’s pro-war stance that makes it ridiculous; it’s the lyrics themselves (the shout-along bridge goes, “Ted Kennedy – wrong! Cindy Sheehan – wrong! France – WRONG! Zell Miller – right!”). No one thinks Zell Miller is right.

(MP3 sample)

I kinda hope the video makes it to MTV. Not because it will be good, but because I wonder how closely it will resemble the C.S. Lewis Jr. videos from the “Blow Up The Moon” sketch from Stereogum’s beloved Mr. Show. Remember kids, “don’t mess around… with God’s America.”

Well, at least it’s as nuanced as “When the President Talks to God”.

  2. shane  |   Posted on Nov 17th, 2005

holy cow. i’d consider myself somewhat conservative, and that’s embarrassing on so many levels it’s absurd.

    way to be subtle, guys.

Keith Olbermann on MSNBC made a video to go along with it. Here’s the clip.

are we sure this isn’t a parody? i spat my coffee out when i heard it. my favourite part is when they list the people who are wrong, espcially when they croon, “France, wrooooong” so funny!

  5. loveanddeath  |   Posted on Nov 17th, 2005

haha Zell Miller is senile. I CHALLENGE YOU TO A DUEL!

  6. Take that, Cindy Sheehan! You won’t stop the president now.

  7. cuz you don’t mess around…

    …with GOD’S AMERICAAAAA

  8. funny how when liberals right protest songs they are wonderful songs. when the right writes a protest song it’s a novelty tune.

  9. way to go mattthew. totally agree.

you know what’s lame? stereogum asking if morningwood is cool or not. if they are hottness or TRL.

quit getting political and restart being the indie manhattan snobs that you are.

    jed, you’re officially a retard.

  11. Jeff  |   Posted on Nov 18th, 2005

That has GOT to be a parody. It’s waay to ridiculous to be otherwise.

    And France bashing? Imagine that.

  12. it kinda has a beer commercial quality…

    miller lite–wrong
    budweiser–wrong
    coors–WROOOONG
    samuel adams–right

or, you know. whatever your favorites are.

  13. calliwell  |   Posted on Nov 18th, 2005

Nader was MEDIOCRE! I don’t know…I figure they should of added him in the song.

  14. Jane  |   Posted on Nov 18th, 2005

My favorite quote from the news clip:

“If you’re gonna make propaganda music, you have to make it GOOD.”

  15. i hear KANYE WEST is going to do a remix…..

    F
    the
    PRESIDENT!

    love,

  16. Fuck haters. Morningwood rules ;-)

  17. Hey now, plenty of people think Zell is right.

But yeah, agree with the other half of your conservative readership – someday, somehow, conservative entertainers will prove tht they’re capable of being political and entertaining at the same time. Until then, I’ll just have to grit my teeth through this and not want to throw rotten fruit at Michael Stipe.

Hey Mr. Monkey, don’t be askin’ “why?”
Cuz you know you can’t mess
    With American pride

I’ve heard these guys do other parodies. This is a work. Just not sure who’s getting worked, the right or the left or both.

  20. Dave  |   Posted on Nov 18th, 2005

“funny how when liberals right protest songs they are wonderful songs. when the right writes a protest song it’s a novelty tune.”

Funny how conservatives produce bad music and have problems with homophones.

  21. Received Opinions  |   Posted on Nov 18th, 2005

You pop music fans shouldn’t get all political. That’s when you sound especially stupid.

  22. Cripes  |   Posted on Nov 18th, 2005

Subtle as System Of A Down or Rage Against the Machine.

  23. Dave  |   Posted on Nov 18th, 2005

“You pop music fans shouldn’t get all political. That’s when you sound especially stupid.”

Why would a non-pop music fan such as yourself post a response on a pop music website?

The lack of self-awareness displayed by some readers of this site is sometimes baffling.

  24. whats a homophone?

two phones of the same brand?

  25. dude  |   Posted on Nov 18th, 2005

I would pay to see Bush singing and dancing to that song.

  26. And twins!

Isn’t this the sort of shit we blast out of helicopters towards enemy compounds? The copy Olbermann reads at the beginning about how Andrew W.K. — sorry, “The Right Brothers” — claim the song will PROVE “WMDs were found in Iraq and that there’s a definite link between Saddam and al Qaeda” is definitely a joke; whether it’s Olbermann’s the the RB’s…

  27. Received Opinions  |   Posted on Nov 18th, 2005

Gee, dave, I like pop music. And, yes, that’s a damn sorry song. All these knee-jerky comments “stickin’ it to Bush Co” are pretty insipid, too. But nice try, dave.

  28. holy shit there’s some dumb motherfuckers who read this site.

“funny how when liberals right protest songs they are wonderful songs. when the right writes a protest song it’s a novelty tune.”

i thought it was only a protest song if you were protesting against those in power, not agreeing with them. is it a protest song if you’re protesting someone’s point of view? woud “tastes great, less filling” be a kind of point/counterpoint protest song?

  30. janine  |   Posted on Nov 18th, 2005

I know that in order to be a modern day conservative, you have to turn off some of your reading comprehension skills as well as any hint of incredulity. That said, the comments have focused more on criticising the song rather than Bush’s policy. And. The. Song. Is. Terrible.

Also, the fact that they are demanding MTV rotation makes them appropriate for this blog.

  31. Patrick  |   Posted on Nov 18th, 2005

Homophones are two words that sound the same, but are spelled differently and have different meanings. Example: “right” and “write”.

  32. Am I the only one who thinks this song is brilliant?

In a very liberal post modern sort of way, of course? It reminds me of the America Dude Video.

  33. “I like my beer cold,
    my TV loud,
    and my homophones FLAMING!!”

  34. how is it possible to not know what a homophone is? did you miss the second grade?

  35. Goon  |   Posted on Nov 18th, 2005

there is such a thing as a rebellious “conservative” song… I dont know if anyone gives a shit about Slayer but they have “Dittohead” which seems like a Rush Limbaugh tribute, and the lyrics seem to support as such…

traditionally though, I agree, conservatives, and i mean pretty far right conservatives (there are many funny Libertarians) like the Right Brothers and Toby Keith, for the most part completely fail to be both funny and artistically expressive. i wish i had an answer for that but i dont… i remember on Family Guy this past week, Stewie’s ‘protest song’
“establishment, establishment – you always know whats best”

  36. um…are you really comparing Bush to Hitler (The Right Brothers to Prussian Blue)??

Didn’t we all decide that comparison was tired and histronic?

  37. b

you really need to work on your sarcasm deciphering skills.

  38. Bobo Eleven  |   Posted on Nov 18th, 2005

    dearest d,
I would like to think “histronic” is a word, but sadly it is not.

  39. Greg  |   Posted on Nov 19th, 2005

No its not a word, but histrionic is a word, and a good one to boot. So someone made a typo. big deal. And I like the point being made as well. Even a Bush hater like me rolls his eyes as soon as the Hitler comparisions come out. Its so played out.

Thats why its best to stick to Pol Pot comparisions.

  40. dude  |   Posted on Nov 19th, 2005

Yeah, I understand that Stereogum likes to make hyperlink references to older posts, but the Prussian Blue comparison is terrible.

  41. Phil Urich  |   Posted on Nov 20th, 2005

Perhaps a good time to mention Godwin’s Law?

  42. Matt  |   Posted on Nov 20th, 2005

I hope “Ashe” is reading this, your just mean. Who did something to you to make you that mean?

  43. “you’re” = you are

  44. Grin  |   Posted on Nov 22nd, 2005

Zell Miller did provide FREE college education to all students in Georgia. I don’t agree with him lately, but the reason the country is sooo split is because of the evaporation of Conservative Democrats (The South) and the LIberal Republicans (The North). It has created a divide in our country. This song is absolutly hillarious…

  45. pyrog  |   Posted on Jan 2nd, 2006

    vapid………………

  46. Patriot  |   Posted on Apr 4th, 2006

As a big fan of rock it’s refreshing to see the The Right Bros provide an alternative to the Rolling Stone Mag image of the tattooed stoner lecturing us on geo-political issues. God bless America and support the troops! We love ya “W”!

  47. EXCELLENT!

I’m buying the CD. AND I’m going to give them free promotion on my website.

Follow-up single (in about a year):
    Bush Is Still F-in’ Right!

  48. Pioneering screenwriter Nigel Kneale, best known for the Quatermass TV serials and films, dies aged 84…
