I kept wondering why everyone was talking about the Pantheon Awards, as I’d never heard of ‘em. Turns out Pantheon Is The New Shortlist, which recognizes under-the-radar albums (less than 500k copies sold domestically between 7/1/04 and 10/30/05).

Pitchfork recommends hitting newpantheon.net to see which panelists nominated which records (“who knew ?uestlove dug Bright Eyes and Suzanne Vega is a Jamiroquai fan?!”).

Who the fuck is Z-Trip?! Shinoda and that other guy from Linkin Park are both reccomending this, and I’m venturing to guess that they are some kind of tour mate or side project.

I think they were getting cutsey on the titles, like graphic designers who put “toybuilder” or “creative type” on their business cards. Ric Ocasek made some nice choices. I just heart him so much.

It’ll be interesting to see the last two years’ hipster darlings Funeral and Illinois go head to head. But I would vote Funeral all the way.

Every once in a while, I try to track down any recent Malik B sightings on the web… all I’ve been able to find is that he’s now going by the name “Imillitant” and he’s featured along with Black Thought on an upcoming (?) track by someone named Maylay Sparks.

apparently some of you have never been to the short list website when they would have the lists by all the people who nominated the albums…i don’t recall linkin park being part of short list, but some of the voters were pretty “mainstream”
anyways, my vote goes to arcade fire hands down. i glanced at the list and didn’t have to think for a second.

Yeah, when I clicked on Matthews I was wondering if there’d be a bunch of ATO records. Uh-huh. Oh well, “Z” deserved to be on the list.
I appreciate the fact that Pinback’s great album got a few nominations, even though they released their album near the beginning of the eligibility period.
There were a lot of big-label artists that were probably only on the list because their album was released just before the eligibility period ended. I expect they’ll be gone next year, either hitting gold (DCFC) or being forgotten (Fiona?).
It’s tricky. Chances are that artists will collaborate with others (or outright sign them to their own labels) when they like them, but then there’s that question—when they recommend them, how much is it genuine admiration and how much is shameless plug? Ah, how commericalization corrupts everything! :P

I say you gotta give it up for Animal Collective – Feels out of those choices, but there is no way in hell it will win with those dorky judges…2 guys from Linkin Park??? Hasn’t it been established already that they don’t know good music just by listening to an album of theirs?
Suzanne Vega? Yeah, it offers more insight to go to itunes and see what’s these guy’s playlists are. And where are the more intelligent “under the radar” musicians…how about aimee mann or something

I’m going to venture that all award shows are self-promoting garbage. How unsurprising is this list of nominees? About as shocking as a Pitchfork best-of. I think Animal Collective, Antony, and Arcade Fire deserve it, but as much as I enjoy the Decemberists, Death Cab (Plans was pretty bleh), and Sufjan, they’re not exactly pushing any boundaries. These kinds of shows won’t be interesting until folks stop being so damn conservative with their choices. I mean, Damien Rice? And who’s going to remember Bloc Party in five years? I think half of the indie rock world these days has as much lasting impact and staying power as Elastica.

I would pick Mensware or Starsailor before Elastica, after all the Frisch has many ramifications and aftershocks still trembling throughout the british music world. (Plus she is the reason everyone has heard of Wire’s Pink Flag now.)
Exactly what radar have these bands fallen under? Anyone who will ever hear or care about the Patheon Awards doesn’t need them.
Plus the title is a complete misnomer since admission to the Pantheon, by definition, would require that you’re already famous.
how is this list even really relavant? Isnt this just a bunch of people giving some “award” to bands we already know and listen to?
Years past the short list always seemed to only be seen by us (the readers of stereogum, fluxblog, etc).
