Tom Vek hitting the Bait Shop is one thing, but when NBC’s shitty mid-season buddy sitcom tries to score cool points…

BLIND DATE: “I just scored tickets to the Arcade Fire!”
BARRY (SETH GREEN): “I love the Arcade Fire!”

…it’s a whole new kind of depressing. Anyway, hopefully Four Kings will be cancelled in a few weeks, if only because its theme song is Counting Crows’ “Hanging Around.”

  1. Couldn’t they at least have gone with something a little more current? That would’ve been great if they’d used Sufjan and mispronounced it. Then we could discuss if it was supposed to be ironic.

  2. Wait a minute…NBC has a shitty mid-season buddy sitcom? Hey, CBS has a shitty mid-season buddy sitcom! Does Four Kings blow? Because Love Monkey blows.

  3. That website is straight creepy, man. What, did Tom Cavanaugh piss in your Cheerios?

  4. It was the pilot episode. Probably filmed last year.

Maybe I’m just a Seth Green (the dude pretty much has the same taste as this whole Stereogum crowd) apologist, but get out of his asshole. The dude writes the show with his friends, and it’s really not that bad (compared to that turd bomb Love Monkey).

But that whole Counting Crows thing kind of makes me want to eat my own shit.

I totally knew stereogum was going to post on this as soon as I saw it on the show!

  6. Sadly, with the majority of the viewing public, “Four Kings” will probably be “Hanging Around” for far too long. :-(

  7. Oddly, Mr. Pope, we were accused of false idolatry (Tom Cavanagh, our golden calf) last week. Neither haters nor lovers be we. Thanks for asking. Cheerio.

Am I too late to bash Love Monkey? I am? Well anyway, what a worthless piece of Ed that show is.

Ew this makes me want to take a shower. Of course this probably traveled a mile over the heads of 90% of nbc’s viewing audience.

  10. I have to agree that I was very disappointed with the Four Kings, I too, thought the whole Counting Crows intro was pukariffic. However, I’m a dork and kind of liked Love Monkey. It was the pilot, I think it may get better. Although the sappy crooner that was showcased was additionally pukariffic.

Its Seth Green! So the show sucks[never seen it] but come on, Seth Green probably sneaked the Arcade Fire refference in there himself. Its like Seth Green endorsing the AF not NBC, so for me, its OK. Like it or not, The Arcade Fire made a brilliant record and records that good will eventually get noticed by dip shits! Their next album, whether its as good or crap, is going to blow up!

  12. shouldn’t that be “I love Arcade Fire”? no “the”?

  13. I thought the same thing, Jim. It’s like saying “I love the Sufjan!” Sounds oddly new-immigrant.

I think you guys are all on the drugs.

  15. ‘shouldn’t that be “I love Arcade Fire”? no “the”?’

Yes. Because that would be freaking _hilarious_.

I still cherish reading a Pixies interview where the interviewer dipshittedly brought up the supposedly improper use of “the.” Their general reaction was clearly the equivalent of “dude, get a life,” but then they pointed out that “the” was originally part of the name–the record company dropped it.

  16. Yeah, you guys are either on to something or you’re on something.

  17. hey, I didn’t see the show, so they could have played it for comedy. who knows?

  18. four kings has junped the shark.

AGGG! That is SO horrible! How DARE they mention such a great wonderful and creative indie band on a cliche lame-o sitcom, with Seth Green!!! I am disgusted.

    Don’t worry about it dood.

who cares that it was on the show… i care more about scene emo bitches destroying the arcade fire’s image.

Pop culture is great. Just because something gets broadcasted to millions of people and you don’t have to go searching it out in obscure little theaters or over the internet doesn’t automatically make it suck. Good for you, you live in New York, you like a band that someone tells you to and then trash it as soon as you hear someone else talking about it. Let’s just enjoy good music because it is good music, whether you downloaded it, bought the album at a show, or heard it on the oc. Long live pop culture.

  24. touche! “the” from now on.
