Emerson College’s comedy troupe Chocolate Cake City made a terrific spoof of Brokeback Mountain‘s movie trailer using clips from the Back to the Future trilogy.

I try to keep every Stereogum post related to music. I admit, this is a stretch: Gustavo Santaolalla’s Brokeback score is nominated for Oscar. I’m posting it anyway. Enjoy.

UPDATE: Oooh, related audio action: a mash-up of BTTF‘s opening Huey Lewis rocker vs Snoop. Oldie (by bootleg standards), but a goodie.

    Hilarious!

Not a parody of Brokeback Mountain’s trailer I would say so much as of the movie on the whole…

Especially now that “gay” is the new soft-spot for the Oscars, are we going to see, following the “gay cowboy” movie, a bunch of other gay genre flicks which, like Brokeback Mountain, have very little to offer besides that “new” twist that you can get ahold of in full from the trailer?

The gay time travel movie, the gay buddy cop movie, the gay cat-and-mouse detective thriller… it could go on and on.

  3. id golf-clap that one…..

    very nice.

Funniest thing I’ve seen on this site since the Bjork video with the dead-beat cat boyfriend… which I later realized wasn’t a spoof

Anyways I’m waiting for the “gay” gay-genre flick about two heterosexual men who sit around watching baseball and eating nachos… in SPACE!

Not sure if Stereogum should be venturing into Defamer territory.

  8. Justin  |   Posted on Feb 2nd, 2006

Stereogum had it up before Defamer.

um, i don’t see how gay is “the new soft-spot” for the oscars. it was nominated regardless or maybe despite its thematic elements of homosexuality. it was considered worthy to be in the running, according to the academy, period the end.

    anywho, hilarious video.

  13. And while we’re on the topic, ‘Broke Mac Mountain’

My brother is the one that made this. So therefore I consider it genius.

  22. Ricky  |   Posted on Feb 4th, 2006

Yes, Todd. I hope we do see a whole ton of fucking gay movies! We have been watching enough straight movies to make us gag! Now, it’s our turn!

Chocolate Cake City is a damn funny collection of folks. If you liked this video, you should try to catch one of their shows @ Emerson. Almost fatally funny!

  24. While I love satire as much as the next person and found this relatively amusing, I really don’t see why the implication of homosexuality in what is traditionally understood as a “straight” narrative is automatically amusing. It seems basically to amount to a sophomoric “ha ha, they’re gay (snicker)” formula, which, beyond being annoying, is borderline offensive.

Not, let me be clear, “God Hates Fags” offensive, but certainly not something that treats homosexual relationships as equally valid and worthy of narrative space.

Secondly, does it even require mentioning that there would be no need for so-called gay “genre” films if homosexuality itself were no longer considered a “genre” of sexuality defined against the dominant cultural narrative of heterosexual romance? These are points generally covered in first year film and literature courses, to say nothing of feminist and gay theory. Scoff if you will, but I’m willing to put my sense of humour on the line and argue a case for maturity in this instance.

    I still laughed, though.

You’re overanalyzing this. It’s funny because it manages to add a dimension to the movie(s) that wasn’t there at all. The idea of Doc and Marty having a relationship *is* preposterous, if you know the characters, and that has nothing to do with “gay is funny”.

You admit you laughed. I think you’re bringing up the offensiveness because you feel you ought to be offended. Point taken, but it ain’t necessarily so.

This trailer’s really about how editing creates context, and one movie alone is a treasure trove of footage for all sorts of different trailers… more sequels, more options, etc.

I found this particular trailer here: http://noseknowledge.blogspot.com/2006/02/world-of-movie-trailer-parodies.html

Check out the Shining one… entirely new context.

    Dusty!

  28. Keith  |   Posted on Oct 12th, 2006

I think gay IS funny in this trailer. Beyond that, gay is wrong, despite what people say nowadays. The cries of conscience is now called homophobia? Garbage.
