The 2009 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame nominees were announced this morning, and again prog get no respect. However, cheers to The Stooges for finally getting the nod (Iggy Pop’s Madonna tribute put him in the Hall’s good graces) along with Metallica, who we haven’t heard from in a while. Also nominated: Jeff Beck, Chic, Wanda Jackson, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Run-D.M.C., War, and Bobby Womack. Only five of those acts will be announced as inductees in January; the event, which has gotten considerably tamer since VH1 started televising it, takes place in April (this year in Cleveland). To be eligible for the Class of 2009, artists had to release their first single or album no later than 1983 — so Kings of Leon have a while to go. Still, this means a whole new crop of great bands were snubbed today. A partial list I will update with your suggestions so we can refer back to it next year:

Beastie Boys
Depeche Mode
Bon Jovi
Peter Gabriel
Cyndi Lauper
Rush
XTC
Slayer
The Smiths
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Duran Duran
The Cure
Sonic Youth
Billy Idol
LL Cool J
The Replacements
Tom Waits

    Sonic Youth!

  2. How about some Billy Idol love? OK, maybe he’s not worthy of induction, but regardless, his music is (or, at least, was) great, and his first solo album came out in ‘82.

While I’m not a fan, LL Cool J’s first single was in ‘84, so he’ll be eligible next year.

And I’m sure someone mentions them every year, but no love for the Replacements?

  3. I’m guessing The Replacements have never been nominated?

  4. first that comes to mind is joy division, though the smiths, the cure and sonic youth are also far more deserving than some of the nominees.

Man, I’d elect like 2/3s of this class, so I know I’m bound to be disappointed when the list of nominees comes out. It’s a blessing and a curse.

That said, I’m also disappointed at no love for Genesis or Yes.

i nominate ben kingsley’s rendition of minor threat

  15. R.E.M.

  16. Another year, another Tom Waits snub. Banish the hall.

  17. I think it’s time for many punk acts to get the nod: Bad Religion, Minor Threat, The Descendents, Hüsker Dü, Bad Brains etc etc.

  18. ^ lmao is that you in your avatar?

Rush deserves to be in, even under the most corporate, wanker-ish criteria. 18 albums, platinum stacked upon platinum, and they never really sold out. Plus they still bring it for real, unlike other 30-year old acts that are parodies, greatest-hits acts, or shells of themselves. Rush does it right, and they need to be in the hall.

My theory as to why they aren’t in is that nobody will volunteer to introduce them for fear of being ass-whipped on stage by ‘em. How rock N roll is that?

Still no love for The Hollies,Zombies or Donovan? And Jeff Beck’s already in(as a member of The Yardbirds)…why a solo nod?

The rock and roll hall of fame is a joke. I actually believe that some left out major bands should sue. Their lack of admittance is costing them money. There are no set of consistant requirements, it’s just ad hoc. I new there was a big problem with the r&r hof when the inducted the beatles on the second year and not the initial year.
