The promised “pop” album from the Fiery Furnaces, Bitter Tea- an album of “Sissy Psychedelic Satanism”, in their words- has begun showing up online. Reaction from the band’s fans (both the pro- and anti-Choir camps) is positive, and the usual detractors are popping up to wonder once again who can possibly enjoy the Friedbergers. Both the track below and the one at Fluxblog have been growing on me after just a few listens. According to Pitchfork, Bitter Tea was mostly a Matt Friedberger show, with Eleanor sticking to vocals and some percussion.

I saw Fiery Furnaces last night in Atlanta for the second time. I was slightly sad that this time they played full songs and paused between them, but it was still a solid rock show. Seeing them interpret their songs live is like watching a really good movie adapted from a so-called unadaptable book.
Ah yes, they are back after their travels way out into leftfield with their grandma.
My favorite of theirs is definitely the EP – this sounds like a return to that. And I like!
“Benton Harbor Blues” may be their best song yet.
To be fair, Matt did the instrumentation on every FF album to date and Eleanor showed up to provide vocals. It’s not like this is anything new.
I wish I’d gone to the show last night in ATL…I’ve been listening to the new album on repeat ALL day.
does anyone have the site for the leak??? thanks
Huh…thought Eleanor had put more into the albums before. Live and learn.
Does anyone else think that this sounds like that song that was playing in the background in SILENCE OF THE LAMBS when they guy was looking at himself in the mirror?
Aaw she wrote it about her sweet lil FF singer Kapranos…jk. I hope the Furnaces come to Detroit soon, ’cause I’m really itchin’ to see them. I’m mostly just happy that there’s no more grandma. Sweet track.
I went to the Furnaces show last night in Cleveland. This is the third FF show I’ve been to and it was great as always, but so different. They played almost all of the songs in a kind of aggressive straight-ahead rock/punk style with no keyboards and increased tempo on the music and lyrics of each song. I too was a bit disappointed that they are now pausing between songs. Also, they were selling “Bitter Tea” at the show, so, of course, I bought it. The album is closest to “EP” and a huge improvement over Choir – although I don’t know if they will ever be able to top “Blueberry Boat.”

Benton Harbour Blues is SO nice. I love the new album, but this particular track has to be my favourite song by them that they’ve ever done.
