VH1′s at it again, asking readers of their .com to rank music for a televised special. The 100 Greatest Hip Hop Songs series will run each night this week and, somehow, does not feature Asher Roth at #1. Hell naw. i love Tupac but “I get Around “is not better than Eminem-Stan, Im just sayin Eminem is my favorite rapper, 8mile 4 life!!!
walk this way was a joke then, and it is now.
Prents just dont understand #96????? What???? That song was one of the first rap songs to played on commercial radio and mtv! Wow, dont get me wrong, I not a Will smith fan but the should be in the top 25 easily!
This list is a disgrace to not only the hip hop community but to the music industry as a whole. Who ever came up with the idea to even think about putting someone like Lil John on the list should be fired immediately then shot and tortured. COMMERCIAL RAP GET THE GUN CLAPPP BOYYYYYYY!!!!
LL Cool J is there twice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ??????????????
wtf? what about “mo money mo problems”? that is way better than some of these
How can you not put the legends Underground Kings BunB and Pimp C on the list pick any song they have ever done its top 100 and what about 8ball & MJG did you have to make a video to be put on the list cause( Lay it down) is top 10 with no video its 2008 do we still have east coast bais out there
Its only hip hop videos idiots, they have it on tv so they need a video clip, not all the songs you think should be on it have videos, go look at another list im sure sum1 else has one and geto boys mind playin tricks on me is dope
What you guys are not realizing, is that the list isnt based on just how popular the songs were, or how catchy the beat is.
Lyrical content is also a huge factor, lyrics that preach the true meaning of hip-hop, growing up in the hood, “makin it”
This list was terrible. I can’t believe Common, Black Sheep, and even Warren G didn’t even hit the top 50. Don’t get me wrong, The Choice is Yours is like Top 20 material, and I used to love H.E.R. should have been in the top ten at least.
They got the wrong Tupac song in the Top 20, Salt-N-Pepa is too high up on the list, and where is O.C.’s Time’s Up??? That song means more now that it did back in 94.
It’s not like I was expecting a very good list in the first place, but putting Lil Wayne or 50 above CL Smooth or The Roots is a disgrace even for MTV. I expected better.
How the fu*k didnt slick rick get any farther than 61? he should be at in the top 21 cuz he is the master storyteller!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I disagree with a bunch of these songs such as nelly hot in herre and also master p and kanye gold digger shouldnt have been so high. also i think eric b. and rakim should be on this list. eric b is president is one of the smoothest hip hop travcks ever recorded also wu tang triumph should have also beenon it, i think but pretty much all good songs none the less.
I am really shocked that Tupac is not on list with California Love. That is one of the best songs ever.
its new
but
my life – the game ft weezy
BADASS SONG
its not the fact of the song like mc hammer you cant touch this its how well known it is you hear that song and everybody knows it tha block is hot by lil wayne shows thats what introduced him most of these songs were one hit wonders that sold
FAIL
ur sayin “Get Low” is better then Nas “One Mic” or ‘”If i ruled the World”……wheres Jay Z Dead Presidents……Kanye “All Falls Down”, Lupe
What d hell!!! What happened to mobb deep ” Shook Ones”. That list is wack!!! They didnt pick the songs correctly! Another thing is that more biggie and tupac songs should be there. There are other songs by them that easily overtakes those other wack songs on the list..Where is “How do you want it” and “California Love” by tupac and ” Big Poppa” amd “One more chance by Biggie. Tupac and Biggie should be listed more since they are the greatest…PERIOD.
A couple of things…. Without question….la di da di should be on that list. Why you may ask…….two years before it was released everybody knew the lyrics…even the vanessa williams part whic was left off the record !!! How may people even knew about that verse!! Another thing…I totally agree with P.E. having the top spot….but not with fight the power….welcome to the terrordome !!! Someone said that emimnem should be replaced with the beastie boys….peep game when russell simmons sold def jam…..he kept the masters to the beastie boys…but Em is clearly the greatest rapper of our time….its been 5 long ass years….and you know he has a story to tell …his life has changed ….we ARE waiting !! But to have JJ fad and l trimm ? on this list and no Just-ice !!!!! Those are commercialists making this list……Just-ice ruled the game for two summers……..with Latoya and the joint with mantronix…..And how is the song that svaed hip hop not on this list ? Sucka mc’s is not on the list but you have cant touch this ? No disrespect to Hammer but that was more pop than hip hop !!!! No KOOL G rap ? I will say one thing though …..Queens New york RULES that list !!!!
I wanna talk shit about this list so bad but I will refrain and just rejoice because at least they got the #1 song right…A song that is sung by a group that defines a time when hip hop was really really good. Well ok..maybe one complaint…my philosophy should of been number 2
I agree with the “My Philosophy” that song is one of the best songs ever made. I remember when that song debuted on Yo!MTV Raps on Saturday with Fab Five Freddy and KRS-One was talking about carrying on BDP without Scott LaRock. Then the video came on toward the end of the show and the highlight of the video is when they took the music out and just heard KRS’ lyrics. That was a big deal then because he was an MC that has something important to say and the lyrics were razor sharp the entire song. I disagree with Public Enemy as number 1 tho because, I felt Black Steel In The Hour Of Chaos was their best song but fight the power should have been on the list.
This is basically a list of some of the most popular Hip Pop hits. Come on most of these songs were big hits but by no means great. There are some major hip hop songs that have been omitted just because they are not mainstream hits. More Black Star, Nas, Wu Tang, and Tribe Called Quest songs deserve to be on here. Where is Murs, MF Doom, early Atmosphere,. The Cold Vein album from Can. Ox is of the best hip hop albums ever, where is Iron Galaxy. There are some good choices here, but they left out some really good music just to put big name pop songs on the list. Would anyone expect anything different though.
Murs is garbage….get that in your head right now.
and certainly arrested development doesnt belong on there….they were singing and chanting !!! the bejamin is only 31 and they dont have Flava in yo ear on here !!! But yet they have the Gall to put PM dawn on this list hahahahaha ……..
Murs is garbage? Laughable. Also PM Dawn’s Set Adrift On Memory Bliss is a great song. To each his own I guess. But saying Murs is garbage is so funny. He is one of the biggest underground hip hop artists ever.
No offense….. he has no flow his beats are gabage…….and in order to be underground…………..your’e not on MTV……..Underground is being pulled to mainstream from the streets not the oppsite (laughs)….Someone mentioned Schoolly D………dam right he belongson that list…..Murs as underground ? Thats a slap in the face to People like Organized Confusion……….
Just because someone is on MTV doesn’t make them not underground or a sell out. I hate that the fact is that indie=underground and Murs is indie. Just because people have heard of someone doesn’t mean that they are underground.
HELLO…….CHECK YOUR ORIGINAL COOMENTS !!! YOU SAID UNDERGROUND….AND IM SORRY YOUNGIN …OBVIOUSLY YOU DON’T KNOW THE RULES……IF YOU ARE ON MTV OR VH1 PROMOTING A RECORD BEFORE YOU HAVE ONE……….THATS NOT UNDERGROUND……..IT’S COMMERCIAL IN IT’S PUREST FORM !!! LET ME GIVE AN EXAMPLE…….DID YOU KNOW ABOUT 50 CENT IN 97 ? ……….i DID……DID YOU HERE ABOUT LL PRE I NEED LOVE…..I DID…..JUST IN CASE YOUR VERY YOUNG…UNDER 25 DID YOU HEAR ABOUT LUDA, OUTKAST, THE LOX, IN THE 90′S …I DID…….THERE WAS TIME WHEN MTV AND VH1 DIDNT PLAY HIP HOP AT ALL !!!!! WHEN YOUR REP WAS MADE IN A PARK OR SCHOOL LUNCH ROOM AND THE PEOPLE BOUGHT THE MUSIC TO THE MASSES…….NO ONE CALLED HIM A SELLOUT…….., BUT IM SEEING SOME HIS EVENTS ON TV NOW……..NO FLOW , AND HE CANT FILL A RECORD SHOP……UNDERGROUND IS SLICK RICK…..1984…..TWO YEARS BEFORE HIS FIRST RECORDING…………EVERYONE KNEW WHO HE WAS……NO TV NEEDED……..
no california love or Big Poppa???
Not trying to spam but I posted a list of missing artist and songs on the vh1 forums. Their forums are way but this is the link I was trying to find more people who were dissatisfied with the list. My list is here http://forums.vh1.com/vh1/board/message?board.id=3b1455bddc96dccfbfbe9c33079c670&message.id=34&jump=true#M34
I am glad that there are true hip-hop heads that feel the same as I do this list was as bogus as they come.
I was saying the same thing homie they made room for so much commercial bs and slighted artist who have more than 1 classic song.
where is california love by tupac, thats the greatest hip-hop song ever.
Dont diss ………California Love …marginal at best…..get educated…peep this !!!
incredibly weak.
thats all i can say because there is too much good stuff that isnt here, and for that .0001% of what is good, there isnt enough of it. fuck commercial and mainstream garbage.
I guess my main problems with the list, besides “the rediculous one song per artist rule!!!” oh and the fact that “Shook Ones” didnt make the list let alone any Mobb Deep, but they put alot of that funny MC Hammer type crap up there!!! VH1 should jus say top 100 selling joints of all time or something along them lines!! We all see the list was a joke tho… Too many songs that deserve to be here are far out of order!!!! -Anyways…
-Get Low? -Had no right to be on the list!!! Not even Hip-Hop!!!!
-The Block is Hot? -Love the song but not even a #50 spot out of 200 let alone top 100!! I might put “A Millie” there.. maybe! Classic production!!!!
-Make em Say Ugh? -Nawwwww!!! Fun song but not Hip-Hop enough!!!!
-Lapdance? -Pharrell and them can’t even spit tho! That song isn’t even a classic!!!
-Oh Boy? -I like this but not even for the top 100.. He does have some classics tho!! What happened Killa?! U fallin 6 feet brotha!!
-Hott in Here? -Hell no, maybe Country Grammer!
-Gold Digger? -#20?? I love Kanye but this isnt even HIS #20!!! What about, “A Falls –Down,” or “Jesus Walks??” Or what about, “Can’t tell Me Nothin?” Way more Hip-Hop!!!!!!
-In da Club? -MAYBE between 80-100!!! I guess.. But “Many Men” is the best thing this man has ever done!!!!!!!
-What you know? -T.I. is nice but not this song!!!!
yeah they really fucked up if they didn’t included at least “California Love”
wtf
Na that song was fun but from Pac, you gotta have “Keep Ya Head Up,” by far 2Pac’s best song ever! I love what tru Hip-Hop represents but this song here represent tru Hip-Hop really!!!! One of the greatest songs ever….. for any genre!!!!
The lack of Passin’ Me By by Pharcyde knocks this list down a grip. the 40-21 section of the list was AMAZING to watch though.
Now for the bullshit !!!! These idiots didnt even put Vanilla Ice on here hahahahahahahhaha I always thought they just painted hammer and called him Vanilla Ice …..
Mainstream america wants no parts of this being #1….but it’s far and away better than Fight the power ….Listen….Chuck is asking you ,,,How low can you go !!!
One more reason John McCain wont be president….. this joint was made 222 years ago………..and it’s still poignant !!!peep and respond……shouldnt be #1 but definitly needs to be revisted……especially now in this very iportant election
No brand Nubian or Puba ? I need a job at VH1…because obviously someone uo there doesnt know the diff between hio hop and pop music…..
I had to post this…..You know how a song is great…..heres how… I had about 10,000 records in my basement. My son now 8….use to go down there and play em……I have everything including current hits…….the two songs him and his friends liten to over and over are ….The Show and My adidas……..at * he said airforce ones by nelly was the worst record he ever heard (lol)….Shows what I know, I liked it !!! (lol) I guess the major difference between the eras is that now they have a hook in every recording instead of straight going hard…………but then again……evolution must occur.
No Big L?
Wu-Tang not in the top 10?
Flaws.
top 100 hip hop songs=not 1 song from UGK…the Pimps rollin over in his grave after seein this shit…this shit was a joke
killing me softly is a ballad…..jeezus who made this list ? Oh I get it the same people that call Bobby Brown a rapper !!
99 Problems by Jay-Z didn’t make the list?
Not cool…
This list if f**king terrible…..It is a total insult the hip hop culture…….
Jeru at #2……And anyone @ #1 beside PE……..? Think about what you put down before you key it in……..Thats Jeru before Biggie before RUNDMC, Before Hova ? Stop hanging out with Amy Whinehouse and take yo ass to rehab !!!
i can belive that “one love” is not in the top 10 that song has so much meaning related to hip hop and live in the projects
where’s SOULS OF MISCHIEF – ’93 TIL INFINITY?!
& “Used to Love H.E.R.” is 69?
This list is wack.
The ruler is like 40 and change……..and there are only a handful of MC’s who can either be in his atmosphere….
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhE6d0xEGk8
No Kool G rap…………………….everything need s to cut out that list ………this was chuck Ds closest competitor…….vocally…..the First recorded Gangster MC….
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Niua9KOzgrA
VH-1 does have another list show in the works. “100 Greatest Hip-Hop Songs of All-Time That Should Have Been On The List In The First Place”
Peep it…….Easily should be in the top 5 !!! Biggie was still on da block……Jay Z had hawaiin silky……..you compare and hit me up !!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNqTz2mMwNE
this joint is jay z and his crew at the same time……as you will figure out Queens New York is Truly where the greatest rappers are from……I know Jay and Jaz are embarassed by this corny ass song and video !!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DaGc3jZJWyA
this list is a slap in the face to hiphop……i surprised they didnt put vanilla ice on here or somethng……..who the hell picked this s***….vh1 has once again proven they don’t a grip on the hip hop culture at all…….tupac is prolly rolling over in his grave because i get around is not one of his greatest songs……lil wayne for the block is hot no sir!!!!kanye for gold digger at 20 get the hell outta here!!!! nelly for hot in here???? and no disrespect to the fugee’s but wasnt fugeelala better then killing me softly??the game shouldnt be on this list at all….cameron with oh boy…are the serious?the sad thing is i think they are!!!!

NAS-IF I RULED THE WORLD
THAT SONG SHOULDVE BEEN NUMBER ONE…POINT BLANK…
NO SONG IN HIP HOP HISTORY IS DAT PERFECT…PERFECT DELIVERY..PERFECT BEAT…PERFECT SINGING…PERFECT MESSAGE….AND WEN SOMEONE PUTS DAT SONG ON IN DA CLUB, EVERYBODY LOVES IT…EVERYBODY….SINGING ALONG WIT NAS…ITS PERFECT….IT SHOULDVE BEEN NUMBER ONE
OTHER SONGS THEY COULDVE PUT UP ARE:
GOODIE MOBB-CELL THERAPY, MOBB DEEP-SHOOK ONES PT.2, CLIPSE-GRINDING, FABOLOUS-BREATHE, LAURYN HILL-EVERYTHING IS EVERYTHING, SOULS OF MISCHIEF-93 TILL INFINITY, METHOD MAN & REDMAN-HOW HIGH, DAS EFX-THEY WANT EFX, GANGSTARR-DWYCK, NICE AND SMOOTH-HIP HOP JUNKIES, THE D.O.C-ITS GETTING FUNKY, ONYX-SLAM, BLACKMOON-GOT U OPIN REMIX, ILL AND AL SKRATCH-WHERE MY HOMIES, RAEKWON-ICE CREAM, XZIBIT-PAPPARAZZI, JUNIOR MAFIA-GET MONEY, JUICE CREW-THE SYMPHONY, STOP THE VIOLENCE MOVEMENT-SELF DESTRUCTION, LEADERS OF THE NEW SCHOOL-CASE OF THE P.T.A etc…
Das efx certainly should have been there.
What about lil troy, wanna be a ballar????
Actually, #29 and #30 are backwards here…
And “I Wish I was a Baller” was by Too Short.
Nas – One Love?? number 48??
Tupac – I Get Around??
There are definetely way more songs from these two that are better than those.
No Gangstarr?? Mass Appeal?? Full Clip?? Skillz? Above The Clouds?? Moment of Truth?? You tellin me that none of those are top 100??
No Big L?? Put It On?? Ebonics??
Terrible terrible list
Fuck
Chamillionaire
Lil wayne (shitest rapper alive)
Nelly
T.I
Lil john
To be totally honest with you, this list is missing some of the dopest songs in hip-hop. Props for putting the P.E. song at #1. But where’s Main Source, Brand Nubian, Tupac, and all the other artists named in the comments section that are ostensibly missing…which leads me to think that VH1 made this list in part to stir up some dust and engage interest for their 2008 Hip Hop Honors show airing on the 9th. The 198 (199, including mine) comments is a testament. They’re anticipating a viral response. And it’s working. I can’t tell you how many bloggers have made posts about this. Keep feeding the machine y’all
Not on the list…!??? NUCLEUS “JAM ON IT”, DAS EFX, XCLAN, BRAND NUBIAN, GANG STARR, MOBB DEEP, SPECIAL ED, YZ, REDMAN, POOR RIGHTEOUS TEACHERS, “PAC-JAM”, KEITH MURRAY, FAT BOYS, PHARCYDE, DEL THA FUNKY HOMOSAPIEN, … what’s the deal with that?
i agree with the list completely they did a good job
This list is WRONG ! Where is Tupac Shuakur “Dear Mama ” ? That song is better then most of the songs on this list.
BIG POPPA bye Biggie didnt make the list are you telling me BIG POPPA ISNT BETTER THAN GET LOW.
how the he** is gold digger number 20? That song is buttttt as helllllllllllllllll Its infront of like some good ass songs.. I mean seriously Today was a good day was 5000000 times better then that trash… Ice Cube should go beat up the guy who made the list for Vh1 lol
Lil Jon? Cam’ron? Nelly? Terror Squad? You’re kidding me right? I nearly fainted when I saw “Lean Back” a spot ahead of Busta Rhymes’ “Woo-Ha! Got You All in Check.” Who’s going to remember Fat Joe in 10 years? NO ONE. “If You Must” by Del Tha Funkee Homosapien needs to be on this list REALLY badly. It’s definitely a glaring omission. Also, I’d like to see some Rage Against the Machine, but I’m not sure they qualify because of the Rap-Metal thing, even though Zach de la Rocha has more flow than half the people on this and is almost as angry as Chuck D.
Where is The Pharcyde??? It just sucks that with artists that are on their, they got some of their worst songs. Hard Knock Life representing Jay-Z??? Gold Digger from Kanye??? B.O.B for Outkast??? Killing Me Softly for the Fugees?
And don’t even get me started on some of the shitty songs from shitty artists on here.
This list is awful public enemy is awful and does not even come close to touching top ten this list is just terrible
where is eazy
Matt obviously you dot know SHIT about hip hop………………………because if you did……you know that eazy e is with NWA at #4………………………….EAZY…No eazy without chuck D setting the table
MADVILLAIN. Plain and simple.
That is what I am talking about, great, great album.
MC Skat Kat was robbed
this list is effed. i don’t know who votes for this crap, but a ton of huge songs are missing. 1 BIG song? 1 Tupac song? U gotta be shitting me. Big Poppa, hit em up, hypnotize, mo money mo problems, california love. ALL those songs should be on there. not to mention some dre joints, and can I get a fuck you. i could do with another eminem song also. take off TI, .Lil Wayne, chamillionaire…those guys don’t hold a candle to biggie, pac, dre, em, nwa, public enemy, etc.
wheres weezy
they need eminem and more 2pac
Mainsource and Onyx ………………deserved recognition as well…… but even the top dudes owe some sort of recognition to LL…….after all def jam was built around him.
No L, no PE, no Hova………..deal with fact …….no your thoughts people !!!
DEL THE FUNKY HOMOSAPIEN HAS ABSOLUTELY NO PLACE ON THIS LIST BUT 200-300……HE WOULD DEFINITLY GET IN………..BEING HONEST HERE…….FRIGGIN DEBBIE HARRY SHOULD BE ON THE LIST BECAUSE THAT WAS VERY FIRST FUSION OF RAP AND ROCK……..DEL…..WAS JUST NORMAL……HE WAS OUT WITH kOOL g RAP…..AND BRAND NUBIAN……..WE DIDNT CARE ABOUT DUDE THEN WHY SHOULD WE CARE NOW ?
I accidently ran across the ballot a couple months ago and i immediately discredited the whole concept….the ballot had Crank That on it….that’s not even one of the greatest 1,000,000 songs in hiphop
oh, and “the bridge”?
WHERE?
DMX WAS ROBBED
Wait, NO MOBB DEEP? ‘Shook ones pt.2′ belongs on any Hip Hop list hell almost all their singles do. No Raekwon either? I guess ‘Ice Cream’ wasnt Hip Hop enough for VH1′s standards. There was no Gangstarr, Blackmoon, Souls of Mischief, or Pharcyde, what a crime and dont get me started on Pete Rock and CL’s ‘T.R.O.Y’ not being in the #1 spot or at least top 3
There are definitely some great songs on that list — BOB, Rappers Delight, OPP, The Message, Walk This Way, and Push It all come to mind. but what the fuck, i mean there are really just some bs calls here. Gold digger? I’d put through the wire, jesus walks, hell, even touch the sky before that song. and what the HELL is up with 2pacs song being ‘I get around’? anybody heard of California Love, or Changes maybe? (Actually, Thugz Mantion acoustic is my favorite by him, but I think that songs a little under the rader).
Used to Love HER should be ranked higher, Nas has some shit (the Message comes to mind again) that should be on here, I’m lookin for Brass Monkey or Sabotoge by Beastie Boys, Mama said Knock you out by LL, and anything (ANYTHING) by KRS.
but other than that, good list.
tupac only made the list once?
are you JOKING? he’s the shiiittt.
& lil wayne makes the list? wooooww. he’s the worst rapper, hands doown.
Ur right, Tupac shoulda made the list more than once….Lil Wayne’s music has no substance, like alot of todays rappers (soula boy for one SUCKS ASS)…however its popular in todays society.
i’m sure someone already said this in between the billions of comments on this but umm it does say that the list was made by fans from VH1s website so you can stop blaming them just like if obama loses all the unregisted black folk (all 8 million of you) can NOT come to the race riot, you stay at home and watch, you non register-er.
LISTS LIKE THIS WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO PLEASE EVERYONE, BUT COME ON, OBVIOUS SONGS ARE MISSING…THE SYMPHONY, ERIC B IS PRESIDENT AND PROBABLY THE MOST OVERLOOKED , THE SCENARIO DIDN’T MAKE THE LIST???…AND WHAT’S UP WITH T.R.O.Y BEING # 90, THAT’S EASILY A TOP 10 HIP HOP SONG OF ALL TIME, AND NO DISRESPECT TO PE BUT FIGHT THE POWER IS NOT THE #1 HIP HOP SONG EVER.
I just loved how they said that De La Soul never repeated the success of Me, Myself and I…. I think they forgot about Ring Ring Ring………
The list was horrible but that’s what happens when you give people a list of songs and tell them to vote on them. Anyone happen to see the VIBE “Greatest Rapper Alive” thing? It was the same crap, give people a list and let them vote. It was missing very notable MC’s. Soulja Boy vs Eminem !! – who comes up with this shit?
Most of the people voting probably never heard half the songs VH1 listed. Soulja Boy said during the show that the first hip hop record he bought was 50 Cent. Soulja Boy probably voted for this list and as we all saw with his Ice-T youtube feud, he’s a moron and doesn’t know shit about hip hop.
One Mic – Nas
The Ghetto – Too $hort
King Of Rock – Run DMC
Paul Revere – Beastie Boys
He Got Game is probably the only PE song I ever really liked.
Boogie Down Bronx
Top Billin’ – Audio Two
And what’s this? MC Hammer but no Vanilla Ice !?!
LMAO Vanilla ice!!!
no Rodney O Joe Cooley? are you kidding me? somehow Everlasting Bass doesn’t make it…but some of this new b.s. that’s out does?
gangstarr?
hello? Bueller?
This is like a punch in the nets to hip hop so many songs that shouldt be in the top 100.
What about Luniz- I got 5 on it should be in the top ten or Mac Dre- Too hard for the radio both should be in the top ten this is like only main stream hip hop
where cassidy at i mean his song is only a song that all the hustlers can relate 2 “im a hustla” not on da list? Dats sum bull it should be in there somewhere
the list is horrible, ghostface killas all i got is u or winter warz should have been on there, nas one love wasnt even the best song on that album and one mic shouda been on there, i could deffinatly go on and on but someone please tell me why my favorite song ever, an instant classic, shook ones 2 from mobb deep is not on there. idiots! the title of the show is missleading, they should change it
This list sucks ass!! Where the hell is Aesop Rock he is by far the best rapper of all time. Aint nobody doin shit that he does, there isnt even nyone who can come close to doin what he does. And if you dont believe me listen to his song “Five Fingers” ot will change ur mind about a lot of things…
shiiit…yall trippin, all the songs on here right
from tha beats to the lyrics….this lis is straight
What about Souls of Mischief- 93 Til Infinity, The Roots- Proceed, Black Moon- Gotcha Open (Remix), ATCQ- Sucka Niggas, Verbal Intercourse- NAS and Raewkown!!!!!
What about the All-star- Self Destruction? I could go on and on, this list lacked a lot of classics….and lets not mention- a plethora of Jay songs that were so much better than Hard Knocks Life, please man….and how in the hell can you pick Nas One Love and not Illmatic???
everybody has an opinion, including me who thinks they missed good songs/artists…but the thing is you cant do this stuff by opinion because then everyone would be mad if it wasnt there way….they probably did this by chart ratings, music video views, and just common interest……notice that for lil jon they were commenting on his crunk drink and wines, and for cam’ron they were talking about how he wore pink and got shot? its more about interesting facts than the actual music which is unfortunette.
no pharcyde.
what a shameful list.
i mean passin’ me by?
one of the best hip hop songs ever written.
I watched this thing, nearly 1/3 of the MC’s paid tribute to Easy E, but there was NO Easy E on the countdown!! I mean “Boyz N Da Hood” is not as good as “Cars with Boom” or “Get Low”!! Really???
And I thought that Outkast’s “Hey Ya” is suppose to be the biggest song of the decade? I love “BOB”, but really, be fair, this was more of a “pay” tribute to the most popular or favorite hip hop artists. If it was a real best songs list then half these songs would not be on here, and Public Enemy, Tupac, Ice T, and even Eminem would have two or more songs on here!!
I can only thank them for not putting “Ice Ice Baby” on here!
#98!!! Dude that song should be in the 20′s at least!
Bone Thugs is good but i dont think that is there best song tho
And is it just me or am i the only one that doesnt see Boyz N Tha Hood on there?
There must have either been a lot of hip-hop blogs linking to this article or there are a LOT of closeted black stereogum readers. This is ridiculous.
That is a pretty dumb thing to say.
I know I’m 2pac bias but lets face it he’s the greatest rapper of all time. But this list is so wrong that vh1 should just scrap it and call it a day, I love “I get around” but there was better songs like “changes”, “california love”, “shed so many tears”, “keep your head up” and the list goes on and on see why he’s the greatest of all time but “DEAR MAMA” should of been #1 really what song takes you through someone’s whole life while showing love to his mom and all the moms in the world.
Where the hell is “Shook Ones II”? And “Hold it Now, Hit it” is a great song but there’s no way in hell its better than “Paul Revere”. “The World is Yours” and “Life’s a Bitch” are the best Nas songs. Get Nelly and Lil’ Wayne and MC Hammer off this list. WHAT DO WE THINK ABOUT HAMMER? HHHHHHUUUUUUUUUUUUUHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!-3RD BASS. Oh yeah, and what about “Can I Kick It?”. That should be at the top 10. It’d be pretty cool if they threw 1-800-Suicide in the 90′s or something. Gravediggaz are the best.
WOO-HA!
alright, first of all, people dont realize, usually when vh1 does lists like these, they only use each artist once (with a few exceptions in this list, ll cool j, run dmc), second of all, they need songs with videos. they only chose singles. and third of all, its a tv channel created list, it has to be somewhat commercial.
and everybody stop riding 2pacs dick, he is way to overrated just because he died. (though i do agree it should’ve been one of his different songs, but still). im not saying the dude aint great, but will you guys please get the fuck over him, there are plenty of people who in my opinion are better than him. (like big l, who for some stupid reason wasn’t even on this list).
anyway, everybody please stop posting the same stupid comments.
only thing that i do agree with that everyone has already said, is SHOOK ONES NEEDS TO BE ON HERE. like for real, does vh1 hate this song or something? it wasn’t on the list for the100 greatest songs of the 90s either. you cant tell me that song wasnt famous, fuckin everybody knew it, and it definitley influenced hip hop in alot of ways. i always hear it sampled and mentioned by other rappers, its loved in the hip hop community, so why isnt it on there? its a classic.
Something from Aquemini should be in the top 10. It’s caled 100 Greatest Hip-Hop Songs, not 100 Most Significant Hip-Hop Songs. Aquemini is the shit.
Plus Wu-Tnag should be in tbe top 10, and Pharcyde should be on the list, somewhere near the end, the good end.
vh1 should never have decided to do this list in the first place
no mobb deep???
but mc hammer, nelly, lil jon, 2 50cent tracks, fat joe, cam’ron, chamillionare, and eve all CLEARLY deserve to be on that list
and they chose the wrong 3 6 mafia track, wrong nas track, wrong eminem track, wrong tupac track, wrong kanye trackk
and why is golddigger and get your freak on so high up on that list????
vh1, let bet or mtv deal with the hip hop issues
you deal with clay aiken or u2
“vh1, let bet or mtv deal with the hip hop issues”
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaamen.
LMAO thats funny!! Soooo true!!!! that list was soooooo wack!!!!!
alright basically this top 100 hip hop songs is seriously disrespectfull to hip hop. and if u know or understand what hip hop is about u feel me on this. I mean NAS, Gangstarr, and Biggie none of them are in the top twenty, and who is 50 cent. hip hop is officially dead.
Two words: Lupe Fiasco
It’s shit like this that’s making him retire with lupEND.
He Say, She Say is had a music video any ways
Two more words: Kanye West
Every graduation song had a video
Three Letters: CRS (Child Rebel Soldier)
Lupe’s Kanye’s and Pharrel’s rap group their single Everyone Noe (Remix) had a video
NO GANGSTARR??
T.R.O.Y. at 90??
LOLOLOLOL WHAT A JOKE!!
no gangstarr = no list
If the guys at MTV (younger and know less music) did this instead of VH1 (older wishing a new Kurt Cobain song would come out), we’d see Bruce Willis and Justin Timberlake talking about hip hop instead of Ice T and Sir Mix A Lot! They would take out great artists like Tribe Called Quest, Black Star, and The Roots and have Kid Rock, Limp Bizcut, and LInkin Park in the countdown. And the show would’ve been hosted by Ryan Seacrest!
Again, thank god “Ice Ice Baby” didn’t make the countdown!!!
