VH1′s at it again, asking readers of their .com to rank music for a televised special. The 100 Greatest Hip Hop Songs series will run each night this week and, somehow, does not feature Asher Roth at #1. 5. real hip hop  |   Posted on Nov 15th, 2008

    sorry,

the list is bogus. a lot of these songs are recent and you have to ask yourself in 20 years will this song still be remembered? I don’t think many will be. The Show at number 51?? Please, you can go to any club today and when they play it everyone will get out on the dance floor. It has to be in the the top ten. Where’s five minutes of funk?

  6. Kanye wests diamonds shoulda been on here somewhere. and T.R.O.Y shoulda been way highter on the list. this song is fire, especially back than. shoulda been in the top ten.

  7. Alex Larson  |   Posted on Nov 15th, 2008

This list should be named the “Mainstream Hip Hop Top 100″! At least they have De La and Black Star at the very least. This list is outdated and commercialized, it’s missing so many gems it actually hurts. The very first post was at least on top of things with the lack of Beastie Boys tracks which is pathetic. Let me make the next list and I think we could get something accomplished.

  8. agreed with mike da god as far as gang starr goes…..you cant have anything to do with hip hop without guru and premier. i also see alot of comment about no pharcyde on the list….agree with that too. personally i think CREAM was a weak(er) wu song compared to others (Protect Ya Neck, Da mystery of chessboxin), but i can appreciate that vh1 wasnt ignorant enough to exclude them from the list. lame, shallow ass list, though

  9. Wack  |   Posted on Nov 15th, 2008

i scan and saw no Dear mama by tupac and immadiately saw this list as gargage. No beastie boys? LOL

  10. darrelG  |   Posted on Nov 15th, 2008

Dude planet rock should’ve been number 1.

  11. ABBY  |   Posted on Nov 16th, 2008

I CANT BELIEVE ” BACK IN THE DAY” BY AHMAD ISNT ON THIS LIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. D!e 4 g0D  |   Posted on Nov 16th, 2008

why is Atmosphere not in the list?!

    thats fucken wack!

  13. robert hamlet  |   Posted on Nov 16th, 2008

Who ever made this list must have been drunk or somethin’. They got Missy Elliott above Eric & Rakim, Nas, De La Soul, Geto Boys, Queen Latifah, and Big Daddy Kane. That’s fuckin’ bullshit G.

  14. I was really disappointed with the list. T.R.O.Y at 90,that song belongs in the top 5.No Gang Starr, and only one Nas song.I cant believe they put Lil (overrated) Wayne ahead of guys like Slick Rick,Commom and EPMD.But seriously,Lil Jon,Lil Wayne,Chamillionaire, thats what they consider top 100 material.

  15. Psychosis  |   Posted on Nov 17th, 2008

Eazy-e “Just Tah Let You Know” should be there also wtf why is T.I. and Lil Wayne on there also “Back In The Day” Ahmad should be there.

  16. Wow, this list is a load of utter shit. I mean, if the kinda kid who thinks they’re musically savy becuaes they watch VH1 would assume Hold it Now Hit It is the beasties best song. That song doesn;t even deserve the beasties top 10. Also, the fact that there is no Deltron is a crying shame.

  17. Terminator X  |   Posted on Nov 19th, 2008

Wait ’til you see my dick. Where the hell is “The Whisper Song” at?

  18. Or the best mashups?
    - Collision course (Jay Z + Linkin Park)
    - Aerosmith + RunDMC
    - Kongcrete + B Real
    - System of a Down + Wu Tang Clan
    - RATM + Cypress Hill

  19. no UJK r u kiddin me also where is all the NWA i mean F@#k the police changed evrything in hip hop and they need more tupac he is by far the best rapper of all time
    RIP TAS

  20. MAD 1  |   Posted on Nov 19th, 2008

This list is bullshit anytime you got hammer, heavy d, and salt n pepa on a list of best hip hop songs of all time something is wrong. Everybody is gonna have their own opinion on what this list should be especially personal favorites so its gonna be tough to gauge it but lets be real some of the artists on this list are garbage

  21. VH1 gotta get sued, this corney ass network just picked songs out of a hat and made a list……..Where is “Summertime”

  22. Summertime by the FreshPrince

  25. Tom G-non  |   Posted on Nov 25th, 2008

There is no way aint nuthin but a g thang was dre’s best song. um hello The Next Episode. I get around was good but that was not Tupacs best, how about Hit em up, ambtions of a rider, or even thugs mansion. Also, LL Cool J has 2 songs on there which i have no problem with, but how is Momma said knock you out not one of them. JUICY! of all Biggie songs, why not hypnotize or get money or dead wrong. As much as i hate him, lil wayne’s best song is go dj and why the hell is that not on there, plus NO BIG TYMERS. Lastly, on the greatest 90′s songs, my name is my eminem was one of them so how is that not on here. Ugh! Hip Hop just got cock slapped by Vh1

some of the best hip hop artists out there arent on the list… like Gangstarr, Talib kweli, Mos Def, J5, Hieroglyphics, blackalicious, digable planets, pharcyde, insight, the roots, zion i, asheru, planet asia,. krs 1………. the list goes on… do your homework or gtfo.

  27. ChinChecker  |   Posted on Nov 27th, 2008

Ice Cube – “It Was A Good Day” at 28 makes me sick to my stomach. That song is easliy top 10, if not top 5.

  28. THE GODFATHER  |   Posted on Nov 28th, 2008

this is the biggest B.S. I just have ever seen!!!!
if you are tellin me that Tupac isnt number 1, I might think its a matter of taste or whatever! but he is not even on the top 10!!! biggest joke ever!!!

    No 3rd Bass?

  36. Burke  |   Posted on Dec 4th, 2008

well, to be honest i feel this list it horrendous. 50 cents in the club ranked top 25? No thank you. Blackstarrs song definition was ranked way to high as well. There are many better songs and artists that deserved to be on the list. I was glad to see C.R.E.A.M ranked 13th at least and Notorius BIG juicy was ranked pretty well too but overall this top 100 list BLOWS.

  37. there is 3rd bass im just sad that tech n9ne didnt get on…he doesnt have to be high up, i just think he’s good….PE should not be #1 they arent that good

  38. Jman  |   Posted on Dec 4th, 2008

Where was Top Billin’ by Audio Two? That is one of the most timeless jams.

Eric B. & Rakim’s had two distinct type of songs, lyrically insane laid back and lyrically insane battlerap. There should have been two songs by Eric B. and Rakim: “As The Rhyme Goes On” for laid back and “Lyrics of Fury” for battlerap.

And one more thing: “You Gots To Chill” is NOT EPMD’s best song. Their best song is and always will be “So What Cha Sayin’”. Their Unfinished Business album was the debut of DJ Scratch, one of the best DJs ever.

  39. Vic Lee  |   Posted on Dec 4th, 2008

Are you serious? I can’t believe 2pac – Changes is not on this list. It has to be at least top 5.

  40. where the hell is changes and dear mama by 2pac. they should be top 10. they are actually relevant to struggles that blacks go through that define hip hop in the first place. WTF?? BABY GOT BACK AND SALT N PEPA ON TOP 20 IS BS. THAT AINT EVEN HIP HOP.

  41. and what about brenda’s got a baby by 2pac?

  42. Big L RIP  |   Posted on Dec 4th, 2008

this list is bullshit and is the very reason hiphop is dead.
ppl don know what to believe.
    thanks for killin it
might as well put a milli at number one

  43. I think “Reasonable Doubt” is one of the best Albums of all time, and that isn’t being hip-hop restrictive, and it doesn’t get a song on the top 100? And Fugees “Killing Me Softly”? That isn’t a hip-hop song. It’s an amazing R&B cover, but doesn’t belong on this list. How about “Ready or Not” instead? Also, I’m really enjoying all the posts reminding me about songs I’ve forgotten!

  44. Jeriel  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2008

    Fuck you Vh1

  45. *Meadow*  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2008

This list has songs that had a significant stand at the time of the release of the song which is why you see Hammer on this list. The songs that had an impact and or influence on a rapper or kids. Beatie Boys had better songs than Hold it now, hit it. That sing is weak compared to other Beastie songs. And fyi, Beastie Boys are better than any other Black Rapper.

  46. I think the is bullshit they need by 2pac wat they have there is not hip-hop

  47. Heavy D is a legend first of all and should be respected as such. Second of all, KRS-One and Scott La Rock are the two members of Boogie Down Productions (#49). Granted, i can think of a dozen KRS/BPD songs better than My Philosophy and most of this awful list. No Onyx? Jurassic 5? STAN!? At least pick a good Eminem Song ffs. No Das EFX. No De La Soul. And I’m sorry, it doesnt matter how influential it was; ‘The Message’ does not deserve to be in the top 50. Chuck D is good, but not better than Nas, Big, Pac and Jay. Overrall, this list looks like several of the “music specialists” at VH1 sat down over a beer and some Billboard Chart data and came up with a half-assed list of songs they liked/were popular or infulential. Booo!

  48. I think many of you are posting about “THE 100 Greatest Hip-Hop Songs”…. NOT “VH1′s 100 Greatest Hip-Hop Songs”
…Though “Cant Touch This” and “Get Low” ,as well as many many others on the list, are not great Hip-Hop songs, they were very influencial to the main stream and bringing Hip-Hop out to anybody who wanted to like it. These songs may not represent “Great Hip-Hop” but they did have a major impact on music history in the name of Hip-Hop. If hearing Mc Hammer or YinYang Twins on VH1 will somehow lead youth to discovering Gang Starr or Eric B. & Rakim…. well then, Thank you Hammer, YingYang Twins, and VH1!…. They should have called it “100 Biggest Hip-Hop Songs” or “100 Most Jiggy Jamz” …whatever….oh well.

  49. Ewokwarrior  |   Posted on Dec 9th, 2008

This is a pretty comprehensive list for popular hip hop that made an impact – if you want an more underground list, go @#$%ing underground, you dumb dingle-berries. Also, I liked Snow a lot more than most people, but I am not at all bummed that he did not make the list because I know that my personal preferences do not dictate the lists of VH1.

  50. Valerie  |   Posted on Dec 10th, 2008

I was just wondering if there was a soundtrack out that I could buy? If anyone knows please let me know thanks!

All i have to say is WTF no M.O.P. How ABout Some Hardcore definitely deserved to be on the list. That track was (and forever will be) a classic

  54. Colin  |   Posted on Dec 12th, 2008

This is such a crappy list. no gang starr not enough wu tang not enough nas or atcq

  55. grouchee  |   Posted on Dec 13th, 2008

I cannot belive The Bridge by MC Shan wasnt on it…i mean these are songs that have stood the test of time..you cant play Camrons “oh boy” ten years from now, more less next year..That is a pathetic list

  60. VH1 fucks up royally again,

    Jesus Christ

Triumph by Wu Tang and Mass Appeal by Gangstarr are two of the best Hip Hop Songs of all time. AND THEY ARE NOT EVEN ON THE LIST WHAT THE FUCK???

  61. superstarsalazar  |   Posted on Dec 14th, 2008

VH1 prooves once again how stupid they are.

To have songs like Goldgger, Lapdance, Hot In Here, 50 Cent on their twice and Lean Bsck on the countdown.

let’s all just realize that this list, for some reason, only focuses on each group/artists most popular or influencial songs and is in no way an actual list of the best of hip hop. these songs are all by the greatest hip hop artists of all time the rest is up to you. but yeah some shit coulda been left off. but just to join in….some of the best missins are everythings gonna be alright naughty by nature, vocab fugees, and wu-tang protect ya neck

iam so not happy about this list !!!!!! iam sorry but are you serious ? 50 cent in da club ? lil jon get low ? like WTF is that ? common i used to love her is number 69 ????WTF he is one of the greatest lyrical genius out there he number 69 ? even tupac was more greater songs than i get around such as like brendas gotta baby , keep your head up , last ones left , where those ???? biggie like come on . he has so many amzing songs , ..this list is horrible and just sad really it is …even the better hip hop songs you do have are not even where they desver to be ..like the fugees number 25 try top ten !!!! the roots like come on top 10 , i must say it again common i used to love her is top 5 , it one of the greatest songs ever and its about hip hop and how much it chnged in that time …iam just saying do some reserch and re do the list !!! heres some advice for next time lil jon , 50 cent dont even belong on there period !!!

  73. vinay666  |   Posted on Dec 21st, 2008

You know who I blame, the basterds who voted for this so called “list” in the first place!

IF U AIN’T KNOW HIP-HOP THEN DON’T VOTE, THEY PROBABLY VOTED FOR THE MOST RESENT SHYT AND NEVER ONCE THAUGHT ABOUT THE PAST!

  74. suparab  |   Posted on Dec 22nd, 2008

Lets not forget this was a list the public voted for – so its not VH1′s fault!

    However, I agree with most of the points – there is a lean towards some commercial stuff and some crazy stuff left out;

    Gangstarr
    Group Home
    Nine
Other Wu Tang tracks (Triumph, Protect your Neck, etc…)
    KRS 1 solo stuff

However, overall the spread of artists is pretty good – it just seems the wrong songs were picked!

  75. marisa  |   Posted on Dec 22nd, 2008

im so glad JUICY IS ON THERE ! best song ever .
Insane in the Brain also . && Got you all in Check .

i think First of the Month by BTNH shoulda been on the list though .

  76. What about Aesop Rock, Zion I, The Grouch… Underground HipHop is better than Lil Wayne…. Considering hes not hiphop but Rap which there is a difference…

  77. SORRY ASS LIST!!!!!!!
BUT WHY IS EVERYONE HATING ON 50s “IN DA CLUB” AND “HATE IT OR LOVE IT”
WHAT YOU HAVE TO UNDERSTAND IS 50 CENT IS THE REASON HIP-HOP STILL HAS A CHANCE TO LIVE. EVERYONE LOVED “IN DA CLUB” WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT, EVEN YOU…SO DONT FRONT. “HATE IT OR LOVE IT” IS A CLASSIC JOINT.

  78. dan b  |   Posted on Dec 22nd, 2008

Eric B & Rakim could and should have 3 or 4 of the top 10. Paid in Full at #24?!?? What??? And Stan is not even Eminem’s best record. And Pac deserves a few more tracks on the list.

  79. Evander  |   Posted on Dec 22nd, 2008

Yo VH1 needs to get 100 MC’s, DJ’s, and around the way Hip Hop Junkies from all over and various eras and let them hand in their personal favorites, tally them all up and by rounding them up, figure out which songs should make the list. That list by True is pretty dope by the way, both of them. I would swap some in the bottom list though.

  80. Boss Hogg  |   Posted on Dec 22nd, 2008

Ya’ll Missin The point. The List is songs that had huge success on either 1 level, or several. Sure there was songs that were flat out better, but did they have the meaning that those songs had? by meaning im talkin did it mean something FOR hip hop, not just to the people who listen to hip hop. Baby got back was a not a lyrical song at all..but if you walk into ANY big city club full of young white people, it will be playing loud ass hell at some point that night. LOL. And Get Low had the whole world listening, not just the states! They said SKEET on the radio..

  81. Evander  |   Posted on Dec 22nd, 2008

Sorry I didn’t mean to post twice^^^^^^^^^^^. Oh yeah by the way, I remember back in the days VH1 never even played rap music… they were all White all day every day so what happened? Now they are the experts????? :)

  82. Melissa  |   Posted on Dec 22nd, 2008

WU TANG CLAN SHOULD HAVE BEEN NUMBER ONE! wu tang forever! they fu**king slaughter. they have such a deep, complex, martial art killing style no one can ever top. WU TANG CLAN AINT NOTHIN TO FUCK WIT!

  83. Melissa  |   Posted on Dec 22nd, 2008

… and lil wayne sucks ass. he has potential for sure, but is a sissy ass little corporate BITCH.

  84. t-pain  |   Posted on Dec 23rd, 2008

This is is mediocre at best.

Add: Anything from Eminem, DMX, Ludacris, B.I.G, Wu-Tang Clan, Run-DMC, Eric B/Rakim, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Biggie, Tupac, Gangstarr, Ice Cube, Ice-T, Jay-Z, and….well a lot more I guess.

Remove: L’Trimm, “Get Low”, J.J Fad, Roxanne, Missy Elliot, “The Humpty Dance”, “Hot in Herre”, “The Block Is Hot”

Put “Juicy” at #1! The other 99….pull them out of a hat and place em wherever.

  85. putanag  |   Posted on Dec 24th, 2008

in reply to all who said ” white, rich, old people voted,” i dont think they’d vote fight the power as number one

  86. Betty  |   Posted on Dec 24th, 2008

This list was flawed but amusing. I also agree that certain artist should not have made the list and sometimes they didnt select the best song for an artist. This is why I found such list and awards shows as well to be meaningless. Since the people voting dont know anything the whole process is void. Last year I heard a count down that had Chingy listed above Rakim as best MC ever. I guess to many people under 25 voted.

  87. Mario C  |   Posted on Dec 24th, 2008

How the hell is PM Dawn on the list…

  88. Where was Gang Starr on this list? Wow.

  89. Luke  |   Posted on Dec 24th, 2008

this is the biggest pile of dog shit I’ve ever seen.. what an insult to hip-hop

  90. Optimo  |   Posted on Dec 25th, 2008

Ok I have problems with this list from the get go and I have a couple of them I’d like to share…There’s a HUGE problem with Big Pun getting snubbed because ‘Twinz’ on Deep Cover with Fat Joe is one of the sickest songs lyrically I’ve ever heard, and I’m not just saying that cause I’m Puerto Rican…Secondly, ‘killing me softly’ by The Fugees is barely even a rap song…Thirdly, ‘Nas Is Like’ is a classic, also a huge snub…Fourthly, ‘Big Poppa’ by BIGGIE is an amazing song on the same album as ‘Juicy’ and should be on this list and last but not least, why isn’t ‘Don’t Sweat The Technique on the list?? Great song by Rakim

  91. Jose24  |   Posted on Dec 25th, 2008

Man I don’t care what anybody says, In Da Club was hot, everybody heard that song and it gave hip hop a revival boost when it neede it the most, nobody was paying attention to it until 50 came out with that album, and as far as the southern hip hop music, thank Ludacris and Get low for getting you on the map at all

  92. Optimo  |   Posted on Dec 25th, 2008

Holla at me if you think Stack Bundles looks like Carmelo Anthony, and while we’re at it, don’t Murphy Lee and Manny Ramirez look like the same person… I’m just saying

  93. If you read the fucking paragraph befor the list you’ll see that it sats vh1 asked its internet readers to select the songs. so make sure you fucking read befor you fucking complain. so as you see it was the mojority of the population that listens to hip-hop and accesses the vh1 web site that selected the songs so read shit befor you go shooting your fucking mouths off about rich, white, buisness men that selecting the songs.

  94. joey  |   Posted on Dec 26th, 2008

lmao @ this hip-hop thread still going. apparently stereogum is like the okayplayer.com of the indie blog circuit

  95. Allen  |   Posted on Dec 26th, 2008

When I saw this on TV, I was amazed that no Tupac song had been mentioned from 100-61. Crazy.

Songs I thought 2Pac would get him in easy:

    Hail Mary
    Unconditional Love
    Changes
    Trapped
    Brendas Got A Baby
    Keep Ya Head Up
    I Get Around
    So Many Tears
    Dear Mama
    California Love
    How Do You Want It
    Life Goes On
To Live and Die In LA
    Until The End of Time
    Thugz Mansion

How the fuck did only I Get Around get on the list?

This is bullshit. I like I Get Around, but I assumed at least California Love would have had to been on the list or Hail Mary, Changes, or Unconditonal Love.

    Stupid list.

  96. Melvin Turcios  |   Posted on Dec 27th, 2008

yo vh1 why diden’t you guys put shook ones part 2 by mobb depp that’s a classic right there. also why wasen’t young jeezy on the list he’s way better than biz markie and kurtis blow. and oh,yeah i don’t think nas’ one love is his best song if you ask me i think his best song is hate me now featuring diddy crazy beat, video, lyrics everything. 1 last thing tupac only one video on countdown c’mon vh1 tupac is a legend!!!!! n.w.a’s straight outta compton should’ve been number 1, vh1 ya’ll don’t know hip-hop!!!!!

Dude, where’s Death Cab? And Duran Duran? And that remix of Lazytown? I can’t believe VH1 still has “list” shows Seems like all they ever do anymore is play music videos.

    • WTF?! Do you even know what Hip-Hop is???? And “all they do is play music videos”??? They RARELY play music videos, even though this is what the station was created for….It’s all that reality show crap now, just like MTV…..

  100. killerbeez  |   Posted on Jan 1st, 2009

I dont understand y biggy, tupac, eric b and rakim and other niggas like them dont have more than one up there and fucking WU TANG CLAN HAS NOTHING its pretty ridiculous, i guess these guys were going more for the popularity at the time and less the true raw undergound hip hop that we all know and love yanadadamean, get 50 off of there get dre up there,, get lil jon off of there and put up some niggas like BIG PUN,
