Watching PJ perform “World Wide Suicide” live on TV gets me misty-eyed about when rockers used to be ultra righteous. Eddie’s one of the few left who we can rest assured is not looking for endorsement deals or a guest spot on Idol. It’s the power of the avocado.

Meanwhile, I would really like some YouTube action of that fake commercial starring Lindsay Lohan in the ass-crack jeans. “Kick coin-slot dryness to the curb!” Who’s got video? What’s more appropriate for Easter? Oh, maybe my favorite Associates MP3:

The Associates – “Tell Me Easter’s On Friday” (MP3)

[Note: our MP3 Feed is down for now, but will be back at some point better and more informative. Most of your RSS readers will still show media enclosures, though, if you're too busy to come visit the 'Gum.]

what about the 2nd song they played, severed hand…that was some in your face rock…

This week Pearl Jam, and next is the Red Hot Chilli Peppers? It’s nice to see the show moving away from their usual habit of booking flavour-of-the-month crap rock, but come on! Can they not book some decent bands without simply re-booking all the ones that were on in 1992?

  3. I really wanted Pearl Jam’s performance to be great – they had the opportunity to knock it out of the park. Unfortunately, I felt as though they kinda phoned it in. The whole thing felt safe and uninspired to me.

I thought Pearl Jam was awful on SNL. There was not a hook in sight and their physical appearance and stage presence were embarrassing. They look like they’re trapped in the early to mid-90s and Eddie’s still doing that demonic facial contortion thing. Pathethic and disappointing (if you had expectations, which I really didn’t).

Quite good. You may like it…

is anyone going to the DRAGONFORCE show in NYC?

i just found out that they sold out the metro in chicago, so i got curious to find out who the hell they were. just listen to that first myspace song. it’s the most awesome and hilarious song in years. somebody has to go and write a review of this. if it isn’t sold out yet. hit up their myspace to feel the fury of a thousand dragons. hahaha.

  7. I never noticed before how much Eddie Vedder looks like my uncle Fred. Creepy.

  8. Calliwell  |   Posted on Apr 16th, 2006

Yeah didn’t care to watch SNL this week. Never was a fan of Pearl Jam beyond their video for “Jeremy”.

  9. fugaze.com  |   Posted on Apr 16th, 2006

pearl jam’s performance was absolutely kick-ass! they still got it. never really lost it actually.

but did anyone notice the camera work? this might sound weird, but the cameras kept zooming and changing angles every 2 seconds making it look like a really budget music video for some shitty power pop band.

  10. That was Pearl Jam?! I was watching that last night, and i was all, like, “damn, this band sounds like a washed-up Pearl Jam.”

  11. I wasn’t impressed. I have friends who just got into them. I thought, “Why now?”

Laser Cats was funny. But hasn’t Lohan already hosted this season?

  12. Yeah, it got me misty-eyed for integrity too. Because Pearl Jam was “brought to you by Budweiser.”

They might as well be opening for Madonna.

  13. This is her first hosting gig this season on SNL, but her third time in two years:

    May 1, 2004 – Usher
    May 21, 2005 – Coldplay
    April 15, 2006 – Pearl Jam

She also appeared during Weekend Update on 12/11/2004 (Colin Farrell/Scissor Sisters).

This info all courtesy of TV.com and thankfully not from my own brain.

I wonder how long it will take for YouTube to remove the video like they did to this guy:
    http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1528552/20060412/weezer.jhtml?headlines=true
If you wanna watch the video they mention, you can d/l it here: http://www.sendspace.com/file/f4s861

After reading that, I lost some faith and love for YouTube.

  15. Pearl Jam hasn’t done anything for me in years, but I thought the song was pretty good.

  16. If anyone’s interested I ripped both of Pearl Jam’s SNL songs into mp3s – http://culturebully.blogspot.com/2006/04/pearl-jam-saturday-night-live-041506.html

  17. Pearl Jam = mediocrity + irrelevance

  18. JT = ignorance + certitude

  19. le sigh  |   Posted on Apr 17th, 2006

    I don’t like Pearl Jam. I don’t disrespect them, don’t think they’re insignificant, just don’t like them.

Why can one not say this without getting eaten by angry hoards fans?

The comments of the SNL review on tvsquad.com are horrifying. They totally attacked that guy, and for no reason at all. Someone not liking a band shouldn’t be a revelation.

Go to http://myspace.com/tenclub to check out a 9 minute video of pearl jam rehearsing their new songs mixed in with interviews of all the band members.

PJ = Great Music + Great Lyrics + Social Awareness X (talented musicians – cheesy sellout antics)

In other words they are Fantastic

Having been bored with Pearl Jam for at least a decade, I watched (Tivo’d) SNL with a genuine desire to be pleasantly surprised by the new stuff. Alas, it was very much “old” Pearl Jam and very, very disappointing and dull and, per Stephen’s post, amost discomfort-inducing to watch them. Bummer.

For anyone not really feeling Pearl Jam anymore…do yourself a favor and check out a live show on their tour this summer. It will all make sense.

  26. Sorry to interrput the Pearl Jam debate, but you guy asked for SNL Lohan commercial youtube, right? You have to watch the monologue as well, but here’s the Lohan SNL commercial:

    Now back to Pearl Jam.

Youtube took down the Lohan link. Dammit.

Also, Pearl Jam + LBC = LBC Boner!

  29. NBC hates YouTube. Dammit. I wanted my coin slots.

  30. Yeah, I like the band, so what? (no boners though.)

le sigh, every time there’s a post about pearl jam at a website, there’s more people bashing them than not. the criticism, starting with kurt calling the band sell-outs and stretching out to blame for every mofo who sang with a deep voice in the 1990’s, always seemed unfair. the band nourished the faithful with christmas singles, great seats at shows, and acted on the basis of principles, at least as compared to other mainstream music celebrities. fans react to the harsh tenor of the criticism, because people seem to take time out of their day to gratuitously bash the band.

that being said, the devotion can be embarrassing. but being embarrassingly devoted is what being a fan is all about. at least outside of the bowery ballroom and mercury lounge.

  31. I can’t help it, LBC! I’ve tried to like them for the quite a many year now. Hell, I’ve tried to *appreciate* them for just as long. They’re just drudging in their same old quasi-grunge quagmire–and have been since, what, “Ten?” I dunno. I don’t hate on PJ much, but I get hated back upon x10 for disliking them.

  37. LBC – Thank you for the kind comments. Relix – has a great article on Pearl Jam titled “Pearl Jam – America’s greatest rock band!” For all you haters out there, realize just this. Pearl Jam is the only, and the one and only band from the grunge era that has survived the grunge era. Because of a couple facts. They have more musical talent than any other band and they have Eddie – fucking – Vedder. Possibly the most talented lyricist ever. This article compares them to the Greatful Dead, except they forgot a couple of things. Pearl Jam has 5 writing musicians, instead of 2. Pearl Jam speaks to the people for the people. And Pearl Jam alienates themselves from the other rockers, by just being rockers.
