Spin-off meme! I’ve been meaning to start this thread too.

Singles, Reality Bites, Dazed & Confused, O, Brother Where Art Thou? = everyone’s got ‘em. And rightly so, they’re great. But what obscure soundtrack do you own that’s not weird, per se, but just surprisingly awesome?

Stereogum’s? The Jackal. Never saw the movie; heard it was shit. But check the tracklist:

01. Fatboy Slim – “Going Out of My Head”
02. Prodigy – “Poison”
03. Massive Attack – “Superpredators (Metal Postcard)”
04. Primal Scream – “Star”
05. Bush – “Swallowed (Goldie/Toasted On Both Sides Mix)”
06. Ani Difranco – “Joyful Girl (Peace And Love Mix)”
07. Moby – “Shining”
08. Dolls Head – “It’s Over, It’s Under”
09. Black Grape – “Get Higher”
10. Goldie And J. Majik – “Sunray 2″
11. BT Featuring Richard Butler – “Shineaway”
12. Agent Provocateur – “Red Tape”
13. The Charlatans UK – “Toothache (Chemical Bros Remix)”
14. Lunatic Calm – “Leave You Far Behind”
15. Apollo Four Forty – “Raw Power”
16. L.T.J. Bukem – “Demon’s Theme”

I will never tire of these:

BT & Richard Butler – “Shineaway” (MP3 Link Expired)
Primal Scream – “Star” (MP3 Link Expired)

And that Black Grape tune, which subverts a Ronald Reagan anti-drug speech, is just hilarious.

And, don’t forget the soundtrack to the ORIGINAL Batman movie, a great effort by Mr. Prince. It played in the background while I was making out with my sixth grade boyfriend, who always wore a Batman tshirt and a GnR hat…

  4. I’m pretty sure someone has mentioned it in the 100 odd comments, but I’m not going to read through all of them but

REPO MAN – Am I just old, or did this not inspire millions (OK, dozens) of teenage punk rock epiphanies…?

RUMBLEFISH – Not so much a soundtrack as a score but Stewart Copeland’s instrumentals took this Coppola film to another level entirely.

i have to agree the tomb raider soundtrack kicks ass, especially because it has “where’s your head” at before it got a video and shit, when they use the song in the movie it is an amazing part.

I really like the First Love, Last Rights soundtrack. All of the songs are written and performed by Shutter to Think, but with different guest vocalists like Jeff Buckley and Liz Phair. Overall, the soundtrack sounds pretty dreamy, like hot weather night music.

The BADLANDS soundtrack, which I suspect is nonexistent. It has a bit from Carl Orff’s “Musica Poetica” that may be the most beautiful thing imaginable – it’s respectfully payed homage to in Lynne Ramsay’s RATCATCHER and egregiously ripped off in Tarantino/Scott’s TRUE ROMANCE. I suspect the only reason Aphex Twin’s “Goon Gumpas” is used in Ramsay’s follow-up MORVERN CALLAR is because of it’s similarity to the Orff composition.

  23. Um, Coneheads and Wayne’s World.

    Crucial Taunt…They wail.

Spinal Tap is kinda sweet as well.

  24. Uncle Buck soundtrack. I still want an official release with the cool jazz/soul stuff they play later in the movie! Damnit!

Oh and The Planet of the Apes will always be one of my all time favorites.

Next on my list is Igby Goes Down. I’d also give some credit to Virgin Suicides and Lost in Translation.

  36. I’d have to put in my vote for Magnolia as well, though the same songs can be found on the great album Bachelor #2. I could only stand to watch that movie for about 20 minutes, but the movie was great.

I’d be lying if I said I knew most of these artists, but the soundtrack turned me on to all of them cause it’s pretty damn good.

  40. I second Some Kind of Wonderful! As well as both of the Kill Bill soundtracks and Romeo+Juliet.

But I’d have to say that the Pretty in Pink soundtrack has definitely stuck with me the longest (even if it’s more old than it is underrated):

    1. If You Leave – Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark
    2. Left of Center – Suzanne Vega w/ Joe Jackson

Most of my top picks have already been mentioned…”Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels” is, by far, my favorite. “Spinal Tap” and “Repo Man” are also great. But one that’s slipped through is “Songs in the Key of X”. While not technically a soundtrack (it’s a collection of songs inspired by the X Files), it’s got some GREAT tracks on it, including the only listenable Foo Fighters song, their cover of Gary Numan’s “Down in the Park.”

Songs in the Key of X:
    X-Files Theme – Mark Snow
    2. Unmarked Helicopters – Soul Coughing
    3. On The Outside – Sheryl Crow
    4. Down In The Park – Foo Fighters
    5. Star Me Kitten – William S. Burroughs & REM
    6. Red Right Hand – Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds
    7. Thanks Bro – Filter
    8. Man Of Steel – Frank Black

    11. Frenzy – Screamin’ Jay Hawkins

    14. If You Never Say Goodbye – P.M. Dawn
    15. X-Files Theme (P.M. Dawn Remix) – P.M. Dawn

And since nobody posted the “Lock, Stock…” track list, here it is (make sure you get the imported version, which includes The Stone Roses “Fools Gold”):

Hundred Mile City – Ocean Colour
    2. “It’s A Deal, It’s A Steal – Tom, Nick & Ed

    25. Fools Gold – The Stone Roses
    26. It’s Been Emotional – Big Chris
    27. 18 With A Bullet – Pete Wingfield

  50. Lots of folks talking about Dead Man on Campus soundtrack, but how about Jim Jarmusch’s Dead Man soundtrack? Lots of guitar noodling by Neil Young, spooky, haunting, dirty–it fits the film perfectly. Highly underrated.

  51. James  |   Posted on Apr 24th, 2006

forget regulate, the Above the Rim soundtrack has the song “big pimpin’” by tha dogg pound that is unbelievably tasty – starts out sounding like a nintendo game and ends with big pimpin’ delemond saying stuff like “unpimp my pen in the hot california sun / and the bitch didn’t strip, smear or run” – ’94 never got better

  52. “A MATTER OF DEGREES” SOUNDTRACK
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100122/
(I’ve never seen the movie, but the soundtrack rawks)

What, no ‘Labyrinth’ soundtrack? The first half is gloriously Bowie-tastic, and the second half… well, you can skip it.

‘The Last Unicorn’, all music by America. Incredibly dorky, but one of my favorite flicks as a kid.

‘Hype!’ had a great soundtrack that stood on its own without the film. I can’t recommend either one enough. A great documentary about Seattle in the early 90s.

    Hype! tracklisting:
    1. K Street – Fastbacks
    2. Return of the Rat – Wipers
    3. Dig It A Hole – U-Men
    4. Swallow My Pride – Green River
    5. Nothing To Say – Soundgarden
    6. Touch Me I’m Sick – Mudhoney
    7. Negative – Nirvana
    8. Mousetrap – Some Velvet Sidewalk
    9. 54/40 – Dead Moon
    10. My Hometown – Girl Trouble
    11. Giant Killer – Tad
    12. Hotcakes – Gas Huffer
    13. Low Beat – Young Fresh Fellows
    14. I Say Fuck – Supersuckers
    15. Knot – 7 Year Bitch
    16. Second Skin – The Gits
    17. Julie Fancavilla – Flop
    18. Throwaway – Posies
    19. Not For You – Pearl Jam
    20. The River Rise – Mark Lanegan
    21. Fire’s Coming Down – Pigeonhed
    22. Just Say – Fastbacks
The hidden track is a snippet of the Muzak version of ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’.

  59. Lost Highway, A Life Less Ordinary, Love and a .45, Stealing Beauty — all excellent.

Curdled is probably not a movie for all tastes (although Angela Jones, aka Esmeralda Villalobos in Pulp Fiction, is completely adorable in it), but the soundtrack is a completely fantastic collection of Latin music. Not a bad song on it, even if you’re not necessarily a fan of the genre.

    1. Cumbia Del Sol – The Blazers
    2. El Talisman – Rosana
    3. Obsession Confession (Instumental) – Slash And Jed Leiber
    4. El Punal Y El Corazon – Cafe Tacuba
    5. Cumbia De Surf – Joseph Julian Gonzalez
    6. Cumbia Del Monte – Pedro Laza Y Sus Pelayeros
    7. Lunas Rotas – Rosana
    8. Guajira De Gabriela – Joseph Julian Gonzalez
    9. Cumbia Colombiana – La Integracion
    10. Mambo De Muerte – Joseph Julian Gonzalez
    11. Ritmo De Tambo – La Sonora Dinamita
    12. Danza Macabra Suite – Joseph Julian Gonzalez
    13. Te Llevare – Tulio Zuloaga
    14. Buscandote – The Latin Brothers
    15. Jardin De Amor – Los Destellos
    16. Obsession – Slash with Marta Sanchez

    Empire Records soundtrack.

Anyone who has a soft spot for mid 90′s alt rock would love this one. I do, yeah, that’s right.

  61. gimme gimme  |   Posted on Apr 24th, 2006

Granted it’s a musical, but Hedwig and the Angry Inch? Great album. The Basketball Diaries – had The Cult, PJ Harvey, The Posies etc. Danny the Dog/Unleashed was kind of cool just to at least hear some new Massica Attack songs. And Purple Rain was kinda awesome back in the day. Backbeat was cool to hear Greg Dulli and friends tackle Beatles covers. Strange Days was kinda interesting, if only to hear Juliette Lewis sing a song PJ Harvey wrote.

Most of my faves have already been mentioned (Virgin Suicides, Squid and the Whale, Repo Man, Garden State) – but there are a couple other really good ones not mentioned.

Betty Blue (Gabriel Yared)and Blade Runner (Vangelis) both have great scores. And the Run Lola Run soundtrack will put some giddyup in your gallop.

  64. DJ Cheese Zombie  |   Posted on Apr 25th, 2006

    All Over Me Soundtrack

    Nobody has mentioned this one

    Somethings Burning – 12 Rounds
    Dynamite – Alison Piptone
    Empty Glasses – The Amps
    Shy – Ani DiFranco
    Hello – Babes in Toyland
    6AM Jullander Shere – Cornershop
    Superglider – Drugstore
Dragon Lady – The Geraldine Fibbers
Hole in the Ground – Helium
    Dimming Soul – Michelle Malone
    Squeezebox Days – The Murmurs
Jackie Blue – Ozark Mountain Daredevils
Pissing In A River – Patti Smith
    Descent – Remy Zero
I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone – Sleater-Kinney
    Game Song – Tuscadero

You probably don’t recognize many of the bands but this one is totally worth it, like totally….worth I…T!

  65. Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels worked pretty well for me:

Hundred Mile High City – Ocean Colour Scene
    The Boss – James Brown
    Truly, Madly, Deeply – Skanga
Police and Thieves – Junior Murvin
18 with a Bullet – Lewis Taylor & Carleen Anderson
    Spooky – Dusty Springfield
    Man Machine – Robbie Williams
    Walk This Land – E Z Roller
I Wanna Be Your Dog – The Stooges
    Liar Liar – Castaways
Why Did You Do It – Stretch
    Oh Girl – Evil Superstars
Zorba the Greek – John Murphy & David Hughes
    The Payback – James Brown
Fool’s Gold – The Stone Roses
    18 with a Bullet – Pete Wingfield

A double dose of James Brown (“I don’t know karate, but I know ca-ray-zee”), one of Robbie Williams’ best songs, classics by Dusty, Junior Murvin, Stone Roses and The Stooges, and pretty good incidentals from Murphy and Hughes.

And also some of the quotes are absolute 24-carat; “It’s a deal, it’s a steal, it’s sale of the fucking century. In fact, fuck it Nick, I think I’ll keep it.”

  66. Cliff Martinez’s ambient score for Traffic is absolutely brills.

  67. Record company EMI sign a deal with the estate of crooner Dean Martin to use the singer’s likeness…

  68. can someone please send me the song “we all have a map of the piano” by mum? ive been looking for this but no luck. please please please

I agree with ’24 hour party people’. Great soundtrack and movie if you are into the Madchester sound of the late 80′s to early 90′s. Another soundtrack I don’t see here is from the Mike Myers movie ‘So I Married an Axe Murderer…’

    1. There She Goes – THE BOO RADLEYS
    2. Brother – Toad The Wet Sprocket
    3. The Break – Soul Asylum List
    4. Starve To Death – Chris Whitley
    5. Rush (New York City Club Version) – Big Audio Dynamite II
    6. This Poem Sucks – Mike Myers
    7. Saturday Night – Ned’s Atomic Dustbin
    8. Long Day In The Universe (Remix) – The Darling Buds
    9. Two Princes – Spin Doctors
    10. My Insatiable One – Suede
    11. Maybe Baby – Sun-60
    12. There She Goes – The La’s

Yes both my choices are from the early 90′s but they remind me of college and lots o’ beersesss,

blowin’ the dust off this! Great listings here too many to mention – good stuffies indeed. IMHO “To Live and Die in LA” by Wang Chung – a little dated BUT for those into the mid80s sound of the DX7 and synth the “second side” instrumental is marvelous.

  71. PITTSBURGH, April 17, 2008 /Direct Newswire/ — According to psychic medium
Jacqueline Murray, rock legends Jim Morrison of “The Doors” and Michael
Hutchence of “INXS” have given her riveting accounts of their controversial
deaths and the many myths that surrounded their lives as only they can tell
    them.

Murray brings to life the channeled accounts of the lives and deaths of
Jim Morrison and Michael Hutchence with some help from world-renowned
psychic Christopher Reburn, Murray’s spiritual teacher, who has confirmed
that these rock legends gave their words to her, based on her own clarity
and pure intent to give their true stories without adding her own bias or
    opinions.

This book will take you on a journey that will make you believe Jim
Morrison and Michael Hutchence are standing next to you — having a
    conversation.

“I’m so proud of Jacqueline, and I proudly put my name on this book
