I have no reference point, as my tiny high school was populated by anorexic JAPs who chose iced lattes over cafeteria food, but we like this vid. It’s what YouTube was invented for — shoutouts to “the chicken guy.”

“The most rocking-est Lunch dude ever, Steve Dock. I had always thought it was cool that he played music in the lunch line, so I decided to use my video skills to make this about him.”

Has he made plans to die in the near future or something like that?

  2. That was my favorite part — it’s like when you leave the lunchroom…you leave the PLANET. “In Memory” indeed.

Anybody have that Wolfmother performance up from Conan yet?

  4. Good news! The kids who made that video have just been hired by Lorne Michaels to write for SNL. Expect 8 sketches about rocking lunch room guys in the weeks to come.

Feel free to not use the word “Japs” in future posts, please. Simply unnecessary.

Word on the “JAP” use – anti-Semite or just a self-hating Jew?

jap jap jap jap jap jap jap jap jap who cares?

  13. And music marketing reps across the country mobilize, spamming innocent cafeteria workers everywhere with their crap bands’ MP3s.

  14. Huh, I grew up like 10 minutes from that town.

and also dude, chinaman isn’t the preferred nomenclature….asian american

I think “Japs” in this case stands for “Jewish American Princesses,” though an all caps JAPs in the post would have reduced the confusion a bit. On the other hand, if the post means to refer in a derogatory manner to persons of Japanese descent, then “Japs” is correct, not “chinks.” Not to put too fine a point on it.

  17. We need more tastemakers like that in the school cafeterias across the nation!

And I’m not talkin’ about the chicken.

    Great piece!

  18. David  |   Posted on May 5th, 2006

I’m sure Scott meant JAP, not Jap.

  19. i still can’t figure out if it was using irony and being condescending or if it was high schoolers trying to be sweet without looking uncool.

“Um, I think pretty good, y’know. I think uh, some of the kids like the rock, some of the kids like the rap, some kids like the heavy metal, it seems some people do some almost moshing in front of my computer, so it’s kind of interesting.”

    F*ck Stereogum. I’m RSSing Steve Block’s mp3 blog.

  21. I think he is saying he went to school with the Japancakes.

  22. wow holy shit didnt think they would post that video. Im a senior in high school and Im going into video productions as a carrer. (yes i agree that the killers are a little overrated but i had to go with it. and i loved the Editors so i threw them on in the beging.) but wow. yah. its just this guy plays some of the best stuff at lunch, and he’s leaving the school this year and i thought, well damn lets do something on him.
    (BTW F’ck SNL.)

  23. Travis  |   Posted on May 5th, 2006

He cut out some of the key points of the movie, however.

Hi, I’m Travis, the one in the purple shirt in the begining and end, and I’d just like to say that it could have been about 1.25 percent better if Pat (above) had put in one more scene which we shot involving how we got our “Information” about Steve Dock leaving the BHS lunchroom forever.

PS. I’m glad you decided to post this video. I hope it inspires lunchrooms across america and the world to do the same thing. Even in Japan. I hope some short Japanese lunch guy decides to play guitar wolf or something awesome like that at lunch because of this… freakin’ jap jews….

  24. That was so awesome! Yay Nutrition Peeps at schools!

  25. These days JAP just means the kind of girl who participates in “my super sweet 16″. I think the Jewish connotations disappeared a long time ago, but the word remains as a helpful shorthand for a combination of traits. Scott is definitely not an anti-Semite!

  26. HAHAHA. Congratulations Pat. Aren’t you glad I told you about Stereogum? Now you’re famous on the internets.

  27. D'oh!  |   Posted on May 6th, 2006

Lindsay, let me guess, you also say “gay” when you really mean “stupid” but that’s not homophobic, right? Sorry to harp on this point, but the facts are, if you call someone who isn’t Jewish a JAP, you’re basically saying that someone who acts like a spoiled princess is acting, well, Jewish.

  28. I like how the song on Steve’s stereo blended with the songs in the vid piece, unless that was just thrown in afterwards. One interviewee seemed like he was being a little too ironic, but whatevs – i still liked it.

  29. dresden  |   Posted on May 6th, 2006

of course the use of JAP here is a jewish term. Japanese people are skinny by nature, so it would offset the reason to be anorexic.

  30. Evan  |   Posted on May 6th, 2006

    He’s like the Flying Pig.

  31. oh! it looks like there’s actually someone out there who’d want to enter stereogum’s red hot chili peppers contest!!

  32. London-born rapper Sway is to be honoured at the BET Hip-Hop awards in the US…
