You guys heard hints of Animal Collective in “On A Neck,” the first track leaked from Yellow House. I think you’ll hear some Sung Tongs in this ethereal ballad too. I’m lovin’ it…

  1. oh, man, i CAN NOT wait for this album to come out.

  2. ummm what happened to the tape hiss?
this is great, potentially really great after a few listens

don’t hear much animal collective other than multiple voices harmonizing

    more please

i don’t get the animal collective comparisons either – i smell the work of lazy music writers. these songs are much more structured and hooky. more more more

  4. I’m absolutely in love with this track. It’s so pretty I could cry!!

  6. I love this song and I love Stereogum!
2006 will be the year of the Grizzly Bear!

  7. WHOA. just great – really excited to hear more.

  8. This band is so incredibly good. Grizzly Bear is the #1 threat to America.

grizzly bear is playing bowery ballroom on june 30th with lansing-dreiden. i’m so excited.

  10. is it me or was the first lansing dreiden record much better?

the difference between “on a neck” and “knife” is rather large
this sounds like it could be a bit of a eclectic album

Knife sounds absolutely nothing like Sung Tongs, nor does On a Neck. I have heard Yellow House and it is very good. Sort of a combination of chamber-pop stuff and then some Bert Janschey stuff, and then there are some psychadelic wigouts. It sounds very little like their first record. But it is good.

I cannot wait – this friggin track is great. reminds me of summer, joints, and the top down. better yet, summer, beach, joints…anyone with me?

  15. bugger  |   Posted on May 24th, 2006

jus cos they called grizzly bear don’t mean they sound like animal co. not sure why this keeps coming up.

nonetheless, the track is pretty tasty

  16. spike  |   Posted on May 24th, 2006

ouch my eyes! this song is so good i just went blind for a second. i can’t believe warp signed these guys…fucking geniuses. i want the album, like, yesterday! hai!

  21. eunhye  |   Posted on May 24th, 2006

    yay grizzly bear
    thank you

  22. i LOVE this song!! thanks so much for putting it up. i loved it from the first time i heard it at one of their live shows last year. now i get to listen to it at home!

  23. the new album is top stuff! absolutely amazing
    it will be a must

  24. wild  |   Posted on May 24th, 2006

I go CRAZY for this song. I’ve been obsessed ever since hearing it live too–among all the songs in Grizzly Bear’s aurally assaulting live set this song totally stood out. I’m going to go where no one else has gone and say that this is way better than Animal Collective.

  25. like  |   Posted on May 24th, 2006

    enough with the AC comparisons
    it’s just not there

if they were called The Broken Sundays or some emo crap name this would never be an issue

  26. Dusty  |   Posted on May 24th, 2006

Animal Collective = not good (nothing interesting to say musically)
Grizzly Bear = very good (much to say musically, great atmospheric vibes, wonderful song arrangements, and the best drummer in the biz)…how you could compare these two bands is beyond me…but thanks for posting.

  27. this is not the GB of the previous recording… even though I love both incarnations I am floored by how much creative growth this group has experienced over the past year… expecting big things from them!

  28. dana  |   Posted on May 24th, 2006

    holy crap that was amazing!

“Animal Collective = not good (nothing interesting to say musically)”

    hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah. ha.

  30. anonymous  |   Posted on May 24th, 2006

I don’t think these songs are written by the same bloke as the last one. I read in some intervew its a new guy.

  31. You're Wrong  |   Posted on May 24th, 2006

    Animal Collective + Akron/Family = Grizzly Bear.

  32. andrew  |   Posted on May 24th, 2006

“Animal Collective = not good (nothing interesting to say musically)”

what an absurd thing to say.
that’s all i can say to that.

  33. yellow house is album of the year so far. 2006 is owned by these guys. this song is amazing. incredible growth as a band. so fresh sounding. HELL FUCKING YES

  34. following the link from the post above we can see an interesting picture for yellow house, with a potential tracklist im guessing

  35. haha like i did that on purpose or something…kind of embarassing. but just so you know that’s not the tracklisting and the artwork looks nothing like that. but you should be excited because the album is amazing and this is my favorite song in a long time. by the way i hear no animal collective at all really. but that’s ok. honest mistake. grizzly bear independent are creatures of their own right, for sure

  36. modestryan  |   Posted on May 24th, 2006

I agree with the Akron/Family comparisons. Nothing like Animal Collective though. I love A.C. but Grizzly is nothing like them at all.
This is a step up from their last album, better production.
Can’t wait for Yellow House. Sounds incredible.

  37. totalvirility  |   Posted on May 24th, 2006

I liked the last GB album and all, but they’d evolved so much in their live shows they’d left them behind–
i’m thrilled to hear that their new album catches up to them and pushes them further.
They’re amazing- this album is really going to be significant. I’m majorly excited.

  38. becca  |   Posted on May 24th, 2006

Grizzly Bear are pure love. this song shreds my socks to pieces. More more more!

  39. Animal Collective comparisons are understandable here but also very lazy. As has been mentioned lower down, Grizzly Bear’s music has much more structure and dynamics making these tracks far more song based and accessible. The production and mixing is also superb with real depth and many hiddens layers which only become apparent after numerous listens.
From what i’ve heard i think there’s no doubt that GB will set their own standards in no time at all!

  40. aaah truly lovely new stuff from grizzlys!
saw them play this track live a few weeks back and it completely blew the tough london crowd away (made up of mostly people who had never heard them before)….
well done kanine and warp :)

  41. I was a lover of the first album, and have seen these guys play live several times (what can I say, I’m a fan), but when i saw them perform this one live, I fell in love with every single one of them. It put me over the top. And the recording is amazing. I cannot WAIT to get this album.

this is boring retread AC stuff (but slower yes) -I’ll go listen to some Brian Wilson now and try to evoke him and play along with my fuzz effect/delay effect/spooky piano and loop it to make it “interesting” and start a band named Scraggly Marmot

  44. I must echo the sentiments presented by ‘Wild.’ I don’t know much about this Animal Farm that everyone is getting so hot and bothered about but this song is great.

  45. andrew  |   Posted on May 25th, 2006

obviously someone in this band digs animal collective a lot. i don’t know much about this band (i’ve only heard the two songs posted on this website), but there is a definite AC influence somehwere in there.

but, at the same time, this music is much, MUCH safer. animal collective melodies soar to forever, while grizzly bear keeps themselves grounded by structure. not that there’s anything wrong with that. this stuff is just way more accessible. almost sounds ready to for vh1.

the akron/family comparisons are crazy though, they will eat a grizzly bear alive.

    p.s. — i hear radiohead, i think.

  46. Good Song! :D
    WARP is an adventurer.
    Battles and Grizzly Bear.
I hope their new album will be great.

  47. scragglymarmot  |   Posted on May 25th, 2006

wow mr gimme sure does have a chip on his/her shoulder. harmonies of course equal brian wilson and AC

i like this and think its fun and new but am not a rabid fan but gimmes comments just sound like a discontented failed musician

    vh1
    ?

    that would be nice

  48. Great song. I really, really wanted to like Grizzly Bear’s first album. I don’t, but I find myself compelled to listen to it every now and again to see if I figured out what I got wrong. Looking forward to hearing this new album.

  49. Ive just seen their concert i copenhagen, denmark it was simply fantastic!
