Holy shit! What’s wrong with me? I actually like this song.
It’s slick and unadventurous, but that chorus is undeniable. One could easily imagine Gwen Stefani delivering the reggae-lite nugget. Even Paris’ inflections reek of L.A.M.B.. Her voice is passable — she’s no, um, Brittany Murphy — but since Ashlee Simpson topped the charts, my expectations for pop stars have been lowered. I even give the production team credit for going all ’80s (shades of Matthew Wilder) instead of inflicting some tired bass-heavy club jawn on us. Of course, I don’t expect any of you to set aside your bias against the heiress/porn star we love to hate. Fair enough, just spare us the corny “…And I go deaf” comments.

So I don’t know if this has been said, but this unlike ANY song on L.A.M.B. except for MAYBE “Rich Girl”. I understand the Gwen Stefani comparison…and I have to say that this EASILY could have been a b-side off of No Doubt’s last heavily reggae-influenced album “Rocksteady”.

Yes, it does wonders, BUT it cannot turn poos into pearls. Overuse autotune, and you end up with a very obvious flange effect as it attacks the transients.
I wanted to hate this song, believe me. But credit where credit’s due, Paris must be able to hold a tune to some extent to use Autotuner in the first place.

I mean, making songs like this is just like making Kraft Dinner, you follow the 3 easy steps. First, find a celebrity willing to lend his name. Second , hire some good musicians to make a simple beat. Third, and most important, heavily distribute it via all the media you can, radios, magazines, internet sites and other supports most often owned by the producers themselves.

I first heard Paris when a clip of her singing Happy Birthday was played on one of those entertainment shows. And I was like ?wow ok Paris.? She has a pretty nice voice, no Mariah or Christina, but better then a lot of singers out there. But ever notice how she has two speaking voices, like Michael Jackson? The high pitched kid voice they put on for show & a deeper, real speaking voice. If she spoke in her regular voice I probably would have expected her to be able to sing. With this song, to me Paris? singing voice sounds like Gwen Stefani, except a little bit more mature. Though I doubt Paris will ever have an ounce of Gwen?s musical genius. I definitely can’t knock Paris’ singing capabilities; I?m just not interested in hearing them.

Am I the only one that can hear the massive production on this track? Not only is it dripping with Autotune, pathetic doubles and so many plugins I cant even see straight, the performance is terrible. Does anyone hear an ounce of emotion in her voice? And what kind of Moon, June, Spoon, unmeaningful lyrics are these??? “Rhyming mind, time, find, ride, guy, pride and inside” must have taken some serious geniuses. Okay so it seems people have pretty mixed views about the track. But it’s important to make those views based on the track and not on the artist (if we dare to call her that just yet). I agree with the post about it being a “fun summery” track that will catch on, and we will probably hear it blast from car stereo’s.
Clearly the song is heavily produced, but you wouldn’t find a track released that wasn’t (unless a live recording was placed on an album). Layering vocals is a common audio engineering technique, and even Mariah with the best range of any female vocalist still surviving, makes use of editing and production in the studio. Oh and for anyone that has been in a studio and recorded a track (chances are very few of you) you still need to be able to have some talent because Autotune and other engineering techniques cannot mask it all.
Take “Stars Are Blind” for what it is. Don’t expect so much (the vocals of say a Christina or Mariah). Oh and for those that may not know this: Haylie Duff who has recorded what was suppose to be the first single for Paris (Screwed) would garner much worse reviews hands down. Oh and what about the awful ballad attempt by Rhianna (Unfaithful???)Even with engineering she doesn’t sing in key!
And hey, at the end of the day at least Paris is doing something with her time that is somewhat productive.

(I mean, really, when I hear Ashlee sing, I think of how many people deserve record contracts and don’t get them, and I’m sad.) It’s true Paris sounds better than most of us anticipated she would (or at least she does in the studio–let’s hear her live, or better yet, a capella). But that doesn’t make her a great singer, nor does it make the song very good. Will I listen again? Sure, why not? It’s slightly catchy. But it’s meaningless music that doesn’t really call to me in any way–not vocally, not production-wise, not lyrically.

Steve, Ive been singing in studios since I was 15 and I disagree- you do not need talent to make a track these days. Do you need to somewhat carry a tune? Yes, but hell, half the population can do that! Ive worked with some amazing producers and seen what they can do. Plugins can add texture and depth to any voice and Autotune can perfect the pitch just to name the major tools. Yes, just about every artist today uses these techniques but the difference with them is they sound AMAZING after the production is finished while Paris sounds just ok enough to blend in with other artists on radio stations.
Do you really think a label would sign an artist if this was the shart they brought the them? I doubt they would even get a showcase! Paris got an album because shes Paris, and just because shes doing something better with her time does not mean she should get the praises of a hardworking musician. There are millions of us out here doing it the hard way and having to show real talent to get in the door.
