Yes, even Stereogum has contracted a mild case of World Cup fever. That goal in the Germany-Poland game may have made lifers of us. And it looks like the Croatian team is embracing the rock.

The night before they play Japan, the Croats will be provided special access to the Deep Purple show 100 yards from their hotel. “Not only will they hear and see it (the concert), they can be part of it,” a team official told Yahoo!. Deep Purple’s best live album? Made In Japan. Oh, the irony.

Since we really know nothing about this “football,” maybe one of you can help. Who should we bet on taking that Cup? Stereogum needs a new pair of shoes.

England, Germany or Brazil would be your safe bets.

  2. trinidad & tobago
    hands down!

USA!! Just kidding. They’ll be lucky to beat Italy on Saturday. I say Germany. And yeah, that goal was insane! Weird ending. Almost as weird as Deep Purple playing for Croatia.

    Argentina are going to win.

  5. mark  |   Posted on Jun 16th, 2006

England is pretty and so is Italy but watch out for the Argies. Seriously, they are a tough side.

  6. Argentina looked mightily impressive earlier today. Spain seem to be hitting some form too, while Brazil are always going to be up there. I think England’s chances are somewhat over-rated, bearing in mind how we’re playing at the minute.

Gotta love Trinidad and Tobago, but Germany are going to win. Croats lost 6 – 0, btw : Damn you Richie Blackmore !

  8. Argentina, Brazil, and Spain have all looked like complete squads, while the English looked pretty weak in their two wins. But Germany could do it all.

  9. As someone else who’s never watched much soccer, I hear you on the goal in the Germany-Poland game. That was beautiful. Did you see the one Argentina scored with the little backwards pass? Great.

  10. Holland. They will lose the next match against the Argies, no biggie, ’cause both sides have already qualified for the next round. The score for the score:

    HOL – ARG 3-2

  11. The Czechs are a great team with a good chance to get to the final but nobody is talking about them. I’d put my money on them.

  12. Holland. They will lose the next match against the Argies, no biggie, ’cause both sides have already qualified for the next round. The teams meet again in the final:

    HOL – ARG 3-2

    Messi: 0-1
    Van der Vaart: 2-1
    Landzaat: 3-1 (penalty)
    Messi: 3-2

    forza italia

  14. Zico  |   Posted on Jun 16th, 2006

    Brazil, obviously.

  15. Argentina looking dang good. My personal pick is Deutschland, though

  16. Argentina or Italy. England isn’t playing well at all and Brazil is a bit too cocky at the moment.

  17. Spain dominated their debut game and Germany’s got home field advantage but Brazil is the favorite to win and Argentina has an amazing team so yea anyone of those

  18. Portugal!

  19. nick  |   Posted on Jun 16th, 2006

France will rebound, if not Holland will take it all.

  20. svetr  |   Posted on Jun 16th, 2006

Sarah T — it was Serbia that lost 6-0, not Croatia. Time to brush up on your southern slavs.

I’d put my money on Argentina or Germany, though my hearts for T&T

  21. Ecuador. You can thank me later.

  22. George  |   Posted on Jun 16th, 2006

My heart says England, my head, and eyes, say Argentina. The second goal, of 6, against Serbia & Montenegro was one of the best you’ll ever see. Scary stuff.

  23. spain. this is their year.

  24. Bridget  |   Posted on Jun 16th, 2006

    Brazil, definitely.

  25. just put my money on the argies to win at 5.6:1

they were 10:1 heading in. shows you where the money’s going.

that was a frightening performance v serbia this morning

  26. mexico
    mexico
even though we played like shit today….

  27. Brasil!

  28. I like Ecuador but my money’s on Argentina.

its incredible so many people are picking argentina and brazil. for you who are keeping score at home (which it seems that no one is), 1 team not from europe has ever won a world cup in europe. it was brazil some 50 YEARS ago.

no way does a south american team win in europe. brazil were lucky to even beat croatia. brazil is going to go down against either the czech republic or italy and argentina will lose to portugal when they play them.

    put your money on italy.

  30. Spain has a good shot this year.

  31. Eric  |   Posted on Jun 16th, 2006

    Brazil. Simple as that.
They’ll beat Holland in the final.

  32. holly  |   Posted on Jun 16th, 2006

    argentina, most definitely!

  33. bret  |   Posted on Jun 16th, 2006

    swedes look good

  34. South Korea! But I think they can (maybe) only make it to the top four.

Brazil & Germany are playing poorly. And seeing as every commentator alive says that Ronaldo looks “disinterested,” not to mention everyone besides Kaka looking not on form, I dunno. Ballack hasn’t even scored yet, oh dear. But I don’t think Germany’s that great of a team anyway. They lucked out last world cup.

Before I saw how England were playing, I thought they definitely had the best chance. After watching them play, I’m really not so sure. Especially without Rooney. They should’ve been up by at least 4-5 goals in the match against Trinidad & Tobago.

I haven’t been watching every single game so I haven’t seen the way Argentina, Spain, or Italy have played.

But, if I were to pick the most likely canidates to win this, I’d say it was Czech Republic. Even though a lot of their players are “over the hill” playing internationally (so they say), they look like a really strong team.

And also, don’t count out Australia for an upset. Clearly, it was done (with Japan). Time will tell.

  35. the ‘no south american team has won in europe in 50 years’ thing is true but is less and less relevant with each WC. Almost every player on Brazil and Argentina play on European teams now. They live in Europe. It’s not an adjustment for them to play a WC in Europe. That didn’t used to be the case in the 70′s and 80′s. Besides, Brazil has won it on four continents now and Argentina on two.

Picks for tomorrow (and I’m on fire on Betfair…):
Italy, Czechs and Portugal (not exactly going out on a limb)

  36. dennis  |   Posted on Jun 17th, 2006

croatia all the way…mainly because it is my background but if i had to choose who i actually see making it to the bottom 2, i will go with argentina, who are playing fantastic and germany, who have the home field advantage.

Damn I’m so confused this World Cup. The one time Australia make it in to the World Cup, Italy start playing decently. I guess we’ll see tonight though when they take on USA. Then Australia vs Brazil tomorrow… Australia better win.

I don’t care if USA doesn’t have a chance. I’m totally going to use the game today as an excuse to get plowed and holler. I love the World Cup!

  39. Rooney  |   Posted on Jun 17th, 2006

    Engalnd England all the way….

  40. Michael Owen's Mistress  |   Posted on Jun 17th, 2006

    ING-ER-LAND!

With Roo match-ready and a guaranteed berth in the round of 16, confidence is only going to build from here on in and they’ll keep getting better and better!

  41. your mam  |   Posted on Jun 17th, 2006

i think england might do it. playing football is for losers. camping in your own half for 60 minutes is the way forward. semis at least.

  42. Argentina

  43. Kid72  |   Posted on Jun 18th, 2006

    Aussies all the way!
    went down to brasil -
but hey, that sounds like fun anyway!

    Go Aus!

To sum up the comments thus far, it could be pretty much ANY team ;)

Me, I’m rooting for Sweden. They might not even make it to the next round, but they’re the best-looking team, hands down. And I’m not even heterosexual!

  46. England is NOT a safe bet. Go with Germany. Brazil will probably do well, but you can’t support them because Ronaldinho has such unbelievably atrocious hair.
