Hollywood Reporter reveals:
Musician Jeff Buckley is getting the biopic treatment. Writer-director Brian Jun, whose Steel City was nominated for the grand jury prize at January’s Sundance Film Festival, will write and direct a feature based on the musician’s life. The movie is being produced by Buckley’s mother, Mary Guibert, and Michelle Sy, who executive produced Finding Neverland.
A script won’t be ready for months, so they’re nowhere near casting. According to Spin Jeff’s mom says: “So, now, my friends, you can swing on the chandeliers speculating about which actors will play which parts.”
Who would you like to see play the late singer/songwriter? Aside from Missy Elliott?

I would definately go for James Franco, without a doubt! He was the first one who popped up in my head when I heard that there was going to be a movie made about Jeff Buckley. If not Franco, then maybe Ethan Hawke. Can`t possibly imagine anyone else playing the role of Jeff than either Franco or Hawke. That I would really like to see! I really look forward to see the movie, but only if the choose the right person for the part.
I pray they don`t pick Brad Pitt only because he`s a big fan or some other popular Hollywood hot-shot actor. Choose quality and similarity, not from the most popular hot-shot actors at the moment. I beg thee!
And last but not least: I pray they would use Jeff`s own voice!

I’ve got some mixed feelings about this film.. like many others already have mentioned, it’ll be wierd to see someone act like Jeff. I think it’s close to impossible..

He’s supposed to be close friends with Mary, and she said that he’s on the “maybe” list.. i dont know.. as I said, I’m having a hard time taking this in. But I will go and see the movie when it’s out nevertheless..

I also think Ehtan Hawke would be great starring in the movie slide away about the great Michael Hutchence.

I’ve always thought Gael Garcia Bernal would make the perfect Jeff Buckley. To whomever said he would have to work on his English…wrong. Yes, he’s Mexican and speaks Spanish, but he also speaks French and English quite well.
Mark Rendall from the movie Charlie Bartlett where he plays kip and looks a lot like Jeff Buckley in the movie. He can sing and act. I think he’s the undercover unexpected winner of the role or should be. He’s also got the emotional sensitivity and strength of character which I think would be perfect for the role. Pick him for sure.
i think james franco if he lost weight to play the role but look at brandon boyd from incubas and josh groban they kind of look similar!
I’d say Bret McKenzie from Flight of the Conchords looks similar to Buckley.

I agree with most here that James Franco should play the part…if not him, Ethan Hawke.
I actually think Brad Pitt would do a pretty good job if he plans on producing it. Many of his films have depth and are thought-provoking.
What I would find very interesting would be if Chris Cornell did the singing for it. If anyone ever listened to the last song on his 1st (maybe only?) solo album, between Soundgarden and Audioslave, it was a tribute to Jeff and sounded almost exactly like him. He has one of the most amazing, versatile ranges of voice in music ever. Don’t know if he’d do it, since he was a friend of Jeff’s apparently.
I’m kind of hoping this movie does not get made. Jeff Buckley was a rather shy singer, who never sold out for the magazines and record executives. He avoided the spotlight, and my guess is he would have cringed at the thought of someone trying to interpret who he was and plaster that on the screen, and it just doesn’t sit right with me.
That said, if you absolutly had to make a movie, of the poeple out there I think Ethan Hawke would be the best bet. Franco really doesn’t look that much like him, he’s a bit too tall and his speaking voice is way off.
A unknown would probably be the best way to go.
Rob Pattinson should ABSOLUTLY play Jeff. Forget Twilght (blah), have you heard him SING!?!?!??! He reminds me of Jeff Buckley soooo much. He could do all the singing and play the guitar himself and it would be WONDERFUL!! Plus he’s got the crazy hair like Jeff. I think there is no doubt Rob would be the perfect Jeff.
Rob Pattinson as Jeff Buckley would be the biggest mistake ever made! Whether you like Twilight or not, the fact is that he was in that movie and will be in two more of them. Just the thought of him portraying JB makes me ill, he looks nothing like him, I am so sick of the hype created by teeny-boppers, I think I’ve hated 14 year old girls since I was born!

It would be a mistake to have Pattison sing Jeff’s songs with his own voice. Pattison voice is ok, but its more like a tom waits/van morrison/Palo Nutini thing going on.
Anyway, I think the director would probably have Jeff’s voice dubbed in whom ever played him in a movie about his life. Getting back to Pattison, he does not have the chops to portray Buckley. Sorry about that. They need an “actor” not a pretty boy face. And Pattison, is a pretty boy. His buddy Sturridge studied acting. Out of the two, Sturridge would be the better pick. But why go British? when we have some good USA actors?
Sorry if this a repeat post but wasnt sure the last one worked; Robert Sean Leonard or Ethan Hawke. Robert has the eyes but both actors I think are too old. Pity as they would have given an honesty.
I guess Matt Bellamy of Muse is a good one. Brad Pitt; well I think we need to give the guy a little credit and if he is really a fan of Jeff, it would be nice to see him get the role as opposed to someone who just looks like Jeff. James Franco looks like Jeff and has the James Dean thing about him but I need to see a quietness in him to believe it. Sorry I sound so pompous!

people do need to chill. This will not be another Ray, or Walk the Line. It will not be nearly as ‘popular’. I think if done correctly (which it seems people involved want to do it correctly) it will just be a great film. An underdog film, a treat for fans, and an earful for music lovers. The young high school kids will not flock to see it. Movie goers will not bash it, but probably will not drool over it.

A movie should not be made at all. However, James Franco and Robert Pattinson had their chance to do a biopic already. They should consider Nick Jonas. He just needs to age a bit, but I think he has the music skills and looks a bit like him.

I was surprised & impressed to find out that Robert Pattinson wrote & performed the bluesy, soulful songs from Twilight “Let Me Sign” (playing during the scene when Edward has to drink Bella’s blood) & “Never Think” (& not a black soul singer, like I’d thought). I am a huge Jeff Buckley fan & was immediately reminded of him & his soul-stirring voice.
Is this movie being made? Its been three years since I have heard anything. What is the ETA!?

I am a huge fan of Jeff, I was also extremely lucky enough to see him play a set at Glastonbury, it broke my heart when he tragically died as it did many people, and I feel its a great idea to make a film about him, let the WORLD know what a sad loss Jeff is to our music genre as so many people have never even heard of Jeff Buckley, I personally feel, james Franco does look like Jeff, but has anyone heard Rob Pattinson sing.. my word its uncanny how Jeff Buckley-esque his voice sounds & as he is a musician before all this Twiglight stuff, I feel he could do it justice, as lets face it, this film is about how incredible a musician Jeff was……. and to let the WORLD know with Rob’s hype.. he can pull in the crowds !!!!!!!!
