On 9/26, Sean Lennon releases his sophomore solo album Friendly Fire, eight years after you didn’t buy Into The Sun. Lennon explains his absence:

“There was a long period after the first album where I felt disillusioned with the machinery of the industry. It’s not that I stopped recording, playing, performing, I did all those things, just more discreetly. Friendly Fire is an experiment to see what it might be like to do music more publicly again.”

As part of the experiment, he produced and stars in a short film for each song on the album. Here’s the trailer:

Keep an eye out for cameos by Jordana Brewster, Bijou Phillips, and Firecrotch.

  1. I not only bought Sean’s first record, I liked it and still have it – it was on Grand Royale afterall…

  2. his 1st album is vastly underrated.

  3. Yeah, it wasn’t bad! But it was ignored.

  4. ug. still annoys me after all these years

He should have used Mom’s money and bought some talent instead of making that shitty “movie”

  6. I still like parts of that first record a lot. The distortion on songs like the one you posted is killer. Good variety overall, too.

  7. This is a real movie? I smell bullshit.

  8. He’s a surprisingly good songwriter and the album is underappreciated, but his voice is so nasal that it can get grating. Then again, I thought that about Rufus Wainwright when I first heard him, but he grew on me to.

  9. question-is this the same sean lennon that was once part of the long winters? or am i totally confused?

  10. Definitely good stuff but ohhh, his voice! It’s so….blarrghghjgjhdfdfhhhh

  11. good god, i’m dumb. and wiki never fails.

  12. Beautifully shot footage, and he’s a smart and capable guy, just not feeling this so far. Cibo Matto stuff was far more interesting to me

  13. I once saw him at Matt Umanov Guitars in the Village and he seemed like a nice guy.

I wonder if the Firecrotch friendship means ‘Chapter 8′ won’t suck.

  14. Our first dance at my wedding nearly 8 years ago was “Into the Sun.” Didn’t seem that obscure at the time.

With an eight-year absence, it’s like he’s following the Scott Walker [ Reply

  15. This sounds like dan the automator production. Is he on the new Sean Lennon CD?

  16. “Firecrotch” – I lol’d.

  17. i loved his first album too….

    much better than julian….

    lol…

not too crazy about that video…

    but, welcome back.

Sean Lennon > anything that came out between eight years ago and right now.

  19. Hea- You’re confused. This Sean is Beatle-spawn. The Long Winters’ Sean is Sean Nelson; and he isn’t even really with that band anymore. He’s also in Harvey Danger, and their last album was surprisingly good. And free.

I suppose he needs the money. That’s why he’s putting out a new album.

  21. Same here, Rachel. I bought it and I loved it, honestly. Saw him live too — he and Rufus Wainwright toured together, and it was a great gig. I’m looking forward to the new one.

This music sounds like it was made by John Lennon’s weird, untalented son…

I thought I saw Mr. Bean in the movie. Or maybe I just wanted to see Mr. Bean in the movie. I don’t know.

  24. frank  |   Posted on Jul 12th, 2006

why does he even bother? he’ll never be as good as his dad Julian. “Much Too Late for Goodbyes” changed the world!

  25. Chris  |   Posted on Jul 12th, 2006

Julian is his brother. Or did I not get your joke?

“I suppose he needs the money. That’s why he’s putting out a new album.”

No, he’s putting out a new album because 2006 has been a disappointing year for music so far. Not to mention, the current state of music…

  27. Oh look people who think Sean Lennon is talentless and simply gets attention because his parents are famous. What a new idea.

I am glad to hear that some folks admit to still liking Into the Sun. Sure, it reeks of debut album, but the songwriting is fantastic. I do agree that his voice is hard to take at times, but lots of mainstream folk say the same about Tom Waits and Neil Young.

  28. I grew to love Into the Sun, and was so frustrated that another album never came. Finally there is one however- I’ll be first in line to buy it. And to the idiots with their money/julian/parents gags- get a life.

I liked several of the songs from Into The Sun quite a bit, so I’ll definitely buy Friendly Fire. Of course the mentally deranged Beatles fans won’t like it. I actually don’t know why.

But I’m someone who started liking the Beatles and the Beach Boys BECAUSE of Sean Lennon. I’m a little embarrassed to say I never knew much about them until after I discovered Sean Lennon back in the late 90’s, but I was a kid back then.

  30. For all of us who will always love and admire his father. Let’s give the guy a break.

  31. does not matter  |   Posted on Sep 8th, 2006

so, “the truth (and/or Pepper)” what exactly is your talent???? Oh, you cannot list “the ability to log on the internet and post comments”…before you rip/criticize others, try to evaluate your flaws or bad parts and try to improve them! I am sure there are many! So, do not waste time criticizing Sean Lennon?your wasting valuable time that could be spent on discovering your own talent (and/or going down that grocery list of your flaws)! By the way, do not allow the propagation of your insecurities occur in the form bashing those that are more fortunate (in terms of HAVING A TALENT) than you! Be secure?stand up and be proud of the shitty hand you were dealt?

INTO THE THE SUN WAS A GREAT CD AND LOOKING FORWARD FOR YOUR NEW RELEASE.
