Harvard grad and Asian fetishist Rivers Cuomo tells MTVNews that Weezer are going bye-bye again.

“I’ve been writing a lot. I don’t know what’ll happen with these songs ? if anything ? I just sort of write them and I can’t stop. I certainly don’t see them becoming Weezer songs, and I don’t really see the point of a solo career. … The band is all back in Los Angeles, and I sometimes I speak with Patrick, and I occasionally e-mail with Brian and Scott, but we’ve never mentioned getting together. Really, for the moment, we are done.”

Don’t hold your breath for a Greatest Hits either.

“I’m not convinced that we have a greatest-hits album that is worth putting out at this point. I’d like to include two more amazing songs on there. And anything else would just seem lazy to me. We’ll see, though. I don’t really feel comfortable with it now.”

What? Weezer were built for a Greatest Hits! Whatevs. I’m much more interested in that third Rentals album.

Check out Matt Sharp and Blur performing “Friends Of P” on the French TV show Taratata ten years ago (YouTube). Nice bug eyes, boys! They look like they’re having a lot of fun.

    weezer has good songs? huh

  2. What do you think the chances are of Rivers touring with The Rentals?

I’ve got tickets for August 5.

hatin on weezer. sheesh. leave them alone. they are still cute and fun and stuff

  4. Considering how bad their last couple records were, I think it’s for the best.

“I just sort of write them and I can’t stop.”

    PLEEEEEEASE stop!!!

“I’d like to include two more amazing songs on there.”

Doesn’t that imply that there are already amazing songs to put on a greatest hits? Cuomo, get over yourself and see the band for what it is/was…bubblegum music to pass the time.

Rivers is overly-humble. I’m glad Matt is out of hiding and back in the game.

This is about 3 records too late, they should have stopped after Pinkerton and ended on a very high note

    weezer needs more cowbell.

And down falls the mansion of cardboard.

  10. I heard that Rivers pushed Matt to do the Rentals again. I saw the first show back here in San Diego and it was FANTASTIC. Way more energy than before. Beware….spoiler coming…..for their encore, the drummer went into a funky brush beat and I thought “Are they gonna do Walk On The Wild Side?!” Seems so perfect with the girl “doot dadoot”s. Yup. Right into Friends of P. One of the best segues I’ve ever seen. Go see ‘em. It’s worth it for that alone.

  11. i thought they stopped being relevant after pinkerton…

Wow, there’s still a tinge of “Parklife”-era Damon in that clip. Back before Justine Frischmann broke up with him and he became bitter and humorous. And annoyingly political.

  13. The whiny college-age losers who hang around in financially unsuccessful record stores for lack of anything better to do will be conducting a mass suicide tonight…

  14. Maybe statements like “Whatevs. I’m much more interested in that third Rentals album.” is the reason Rivers feels unloved. Despite the lacking in recent albums I would still label Weezer a very important group.

thanks josh, you save me from having to post that.

Agreed. The first two Weezer albums were great, the third teetered between fun and not-so-fun and the last two have been depressingly awful. 7 More Minutes towers over the last three Weezer efforts, easily. Sidenote: I actually liked Matt Sharp’s weird alt-country phase.

  17. Good riddance. Weezer should’ve never reunited in the first place. I think Rivers has gone completely off the deep end and won’t write anything more than half-assed Blue Album retreads. Do we really need another “Beverly Hills”?

  18. wow airport, a mansion of cardboard reference.
The reason I’ll always root for Rivers and Weezer to keep going is the hope that Rivers could remember how to write a good song at any moment.

    1. weezer stopped being good after “pinkerton”. we all know that.

    2. im flying up from florida to see the rentals at irving plaza.

    holy crap, i can’t wait!!

  20. Apparently “greatest hits” is a relative thing.

  21. Weezer already has a Greatest Hits album. It’s blue.

  22. Id rather they break up before they release something like make believe.

A Greatest Hits is silly, considering most of it would come from the first 3 albums which consists of only 30 songs. It would look like this:
    1. Buddy Holly
    2. Undone
    3. Say it Ain’t So
    4. El Scorcho
    5. The Good Life
    6. Pink Triangle
    7. Hash Pipe
    8. Island in the Sun
    9. Photograph
    10. Dope Nose
    11. Keep Fishin (single version)
    12. Beverly Hills
    13. We Are All on Drugs
    14. Perfect Situation
    15. This is Such a Pity

How fucking lame. Possibly a couple of albums tracks, songs that are almost singles Jonas or Surf Wax, maybe Only in Dreams and Tired of Sex or Butterfly to change it up. Throw in a new track or a b-side and that’s it.
What they should really do is a box set of all the unreleased material from each period of the band. Pre-Blue, Post-Blue and most interestingly Post-Pinkerton and Pre-Green, especially the unreleased “Homie” album and Weezer demos from ’97-’00. I don’t care so much about all the Maladroit demos and that crap, that can have its own box set since it was all released on the internet anyway.

  24. Stephen  |   Posted on Jul 12th, 2006

Oh yeah, and I highly doubt that would be the sequencing for the greatest hits if they have any clue, as it would be depressing to listen to a great band become a really crap band over the course of an hour.

  27. Post-Pinkerton, look how good so many of the songs were the didn’t make it onto a full album…Superstar, Too Late to Try, I Just threw out the Love of My Dreams, Preacher’s Son, Teenage Victory Song, Waiting on You, Private Message, Prodigy Lover, Mo Beats, Always, Christmas Celebration, Devotion…

They just happen to choose to put bad songs on the albums.
