Chan Marshall, better known in the indie-rock world as Cat Power, returned to Memphis last week to film the video for “Lived In Bars.” The Robert Gordon- directed piece depicts an all-out bash filmed at The Lamplighter on Madison Avenue, one of Midtown’s favorite dives.
“We had a dance party there that George Klein would have been proud of,” says Gordon.
The song is from her latest album The Greatest, released in January and recorded in Memphis with the Memphis Rhythm Band, a hodgepodge of musicians Gordon helped Marshall put together that includes Teenie Hodges, Steve Potts, Dave Smith, Rick Steff, Doug Easley, Jim Spake, Scott Thompson and Susan Marshall. String arrangements were contributed by Harlan T. Bobo and Jonathan Kirkscey.
Marshall will be on tour most of the summer with her Memphis cohorts, including a stop at next weekend’s Bonnaroo Festival in Manchester, Tenn. Or check them out on June 13 “The Late Show with David Letterman.” As to how the new record sounds, her press material sums it up: “If Alex Chilton were today a beautiful young woman, he’d sound like this.”
…So the trucker hat said “CAT POWER” (probably a statement about the strength of Caterpillar tractors). My hometown is also home to the world headquarters of Cat.
aww… she is so cute! <3
sweet indeed. some very nice touches of memphis in there from robert gordon.
Chan makes me smile.
She’s got some serious pipes — and I mean that in every way.
love her. that album is absolutely gorgeous.
when did she become such a firecracker?? sheesh! i like it!
yeah. when did she get so hot?
Speaking of cat videos, how about Khia’s “Snatch the Cat Back”? That one’s hot!!!
And is Cat Power some sort of statement about the strength of pussy?
hot.

Is that William Eggleston? Sadly, I recognized his piano before his face.
“And is Cat Power some sort of statement about the strength of pussy?”
I don’t know, but her voice is like some kind of aural orgasm isn’t it?
I’m not sure what eggleston look like, but he lives in Memphis.
“And is Cat Power some sort of statement about the strength of pussy?”
No, it’s some sort of statement about the Catapiller brand arth moving equipment (really!).
favourite of the album. love the bit where shes dancing suggestively on her hunkers and sort of notices the kids are watching and stands up..
ok, yes, its Eggleston – also in the video is Susan Marshall, Doug Easley and Andria Lisle…
one of my favorite cat power songs
Lovely, but ‘Living Proof’ still floats mah boat.

“And is Cat Power some sort of statement about the strength of pussy?”
Ha, she should call herself Pussy Power. That would be awesome. Although if the Cat earth movers thing is true, that’s even better.
Nice vid.
Man, I love Chan. She is something special.
“And is Cat Power some sort of statement about the strength of pussy?”
She got the name from a trucker hat. Cat Power is some sort of deisel engine or some shit.
She is so hot.
