Some MP3s and videos you might wanna check out in this one. But first, backstory: Right around CMJ 2K9, Ernest Greene dropped by NYC’s Santos Party House for a one-off show as the one-man button pusher behind the hazily grooved pop reveries of Washed Out. With the industry getting into gear for its annual spring fling in Austin, Washed Out is ready to try the live thing again, now with the benefit of a backing band in place that happens to offer its own brand of melancholic ’80s references under the name Small Black. Props in place to Lovepump United, the ace indie that’s served as catalyst for a triple-headed tour featuring the aforementioned chillwave (ugh) valedictorians and rounded out by BTW Travis Egedy aka Pictureplane. LPU is home to Pictureplane’s cosmically-themed experimental house workout Dark Rift, and the label recently released a split 7″ wherein Small Black and Washed Out  remixed each other (“You’ll See It” and “Despicable Dogs,” respectively). Tempting to trace this jaunt’s onstage collabs back to that vinyl base point, though really its roots lie in a string of mutually appreciative emails between Small Black’s Josh Kolenik and Mr. Greene. Last night at Mercury was email in action, then, with the tour’s second stop (all dates below). Kyle Dean Reinford battled the light rig for this set of photos — have a pass, and soldier on for live clips of “Belong” and “New Theory” from the Small Black-infused Washed Out set. More reason to “continue reading”: a freshly released instrumental cut from Washed Out’s new tour-only CD-R titled simply “Track 07,” and MP3 of Pictureplane’s latest single “Beyond Fantasy,” which uses Baby D’s 1994 track “Let Me Be Your Fantasy” as an anchor for one of his typically dizzying and jacked-up dance trips.

  1. Great show… especially when Small Black joined Washed Out on stage. The beats where much more dance oriented than their albums which made for a livelier, enthusiastic crowd. The guy behind Washed Out seems really humble and genuine too. I look forward to future Washed Out releases –

(Amrit, you have the date as “2/7/10″ – should be 3/7/10)

    • Ah thanks I’m fixing now, thanks mcnutty. (I like your handle because it always reminds me of Bubbles talking to McNulty, if that means anything to you. Which, I hope it does.)

      • Yes, The Wire. My friend had a painting in her basement by “MF McNutt”… it seemed vaguely vulgar and sounded better than “i pee on your face” as a handle.

  2. Cannot wait for this show – going Wednesday in Bmore!
