Actually, on latenightwithjimmyfallon.com. This hasn’t even aired yet. “Terrible Love” is our first listen from and the first track on the National’s forthcoming LP High Violet. Are you ready for some good music?
International National fans should try YouTube while it’s up. (Thanks to Audio Perv.)
The band will play Brooklyn’s Bell House tonight and tomorrow. Tickets sold out in less than a minute.
High Violet is out 5/11 on 4AD.

oh man, it’s so much better with headphones.
reverb ridden adult angst, im lovin it
well “color” me excited. i think this album will be the band’s biggest success.
I just crapped myself. Thrice.
Mind=blown
so. fucking. awesome.
Well, that was great. May is going to be a good month for music.
Ohmygod YES. I’m so excited for this album to come out, along with many others being released in May. (and June, and all of this year. Such a good year for music!)
I hate to use this word, but this song is incredibly epic. Man oh man this album is gonna impress.
Imma have to agree wit u right there.
Well, this is going to be a good day. And year.
{presses play again, sinks in to happiness and awe.}
sounds like a great song. i’m anxious to hear the record.
fallon’s had some great musical guests lately, but it seems like the sound quality/mixing has been pretty poor…
Supposedly they played another song called Blood Buzz Ohio which will be put on the fallon website in April. Based on the live performances I’ve heard of that song that as well will be epic. Its about time these guys get their well deserved attention/credit.
ithinkiamsteven,
Agreed. I wish Matts mic was turned up louder, it was hard to make up all the lyrics.
That was amazing. And I’m seeing them tonight. I can’t wait for this show!
Holy moly good.
The next few months are shaping up to be ridiculously good release-wise.
indeed, walkmen, bss, national releases….
terrible love? what, was “bad romance” taken or something?
incredible
Yeah, that was pretty awesome. I can’t wait to hear the whole album. It seems like these guys just keep getting better and better.
I have to agree with the people who said that the sound was reeeeaaaally muddy though. Great song, not-so-great mixing.
Hidden due to low comment rating. Click here to see.
yes you’re the only one who can’t stand his voice. that much is certain.
Pretty much, yeah. His voice is one of, if not the best part of the band.
And I will also add that this song kicked my ass.
I can’t either. I’ve tried. :-/ I feel ya on that one.
I need to listen to it again, but am I the only one not blown away? I mean I love everything they do, but I want another “Mr. November” some day… and a record better than Boxer? Not sure if that’s possible? (literally every track is amazing). But glad to see they’re keeping it interesting.
As good as this was, I agree that the new album will be hard-pressed to surpass the last one in terms of overall quality. “Boxer” is as close to a perfect record as you can get.
found an mp3 rip of the performance here

Ohhhh…. Eargasm!!!
Oohhhh I’m feeling the eargasm too.
Maybe it was just that his vox was mixed pretty low, but I feel like there is something distinctly shoegaze about this song. Not that that’s a bad thing, I really like the song.
It sort of reminds me of Yo La Tengo’s “We’re An American Band” with the really serene and ponderous beginning and then building up to a chaotic guitar frenzy in the finale. So yeah, I can kind of see what you’re saying.
I need a cigarette.
(and I don’t smoke)
That. Was. Awesome.
The National are about to drop the best album of 2010. Period.
I just heard basically the whole new album, and absolutely, yes, this is going to be the best album of the year.
Anyone else feel me that the drum fills on this are identical to Boxer? There is a fine line between consistency and repetitiveness.
agreed: Brainy, Blank Slate, Blood Buzz…
Oh my god I’ve been waiting for something new. Their music is so sincere and tangible. I love this song and I am giddy for the album.
Like everybody said; that was awesome. One of the best bands of the last ten years.
Pretty good and I dont think much of The National.
killed it!!
i noticed the drums being similar to Brainy, but who cares? its an awesome song. definitely excited for the new album
Eh. They’ve taken this as far as it can go. The vocals are getting really close to self-parody, take the usual drums, the usual feel, add the now-standard horns, eh. Really not in the same ballpark as their best stuff.
…you are a dumb person.
I’m a huge fan and I think Paul is right on. Sad Songs and Alligator have better vocal melodies than Boxer and certain better than this. Berninger tends to lapse into monotonous mumbling when he has range. Also, I’m a little tired of the totally abstract and opaque lyrics. Walking with spiders? It takes an ocean not to break?
The National now have a sound and a mood. Spoon does, too, but they seem to push things forward with each new record. As I posted above, there is a fine line between consistency and repetitiveness.
Someone turn up the vocal mic, this is sounding like U2-Gaze
I don’t get them. He never can hold a tune. Sounds like mumbling
this song is awesome, Im stoked for the album, but this art is terrible.
i’m underwhelmed…after all the comments about how mind blowing this was, i was expecting something original and unique…i felt it was pretty much a bunch of matured indie dudes paying pretty boring music…but then again i’m a jaded noise fan who needs things to sound like something new, not just early 2000′s rehashed adult contemporary
You are going to die alone and miss everything cool
