Remember that not-a-Vans-commercial “Vans” by Bay Area hip-hoppers The Pack? Well, they made a video for the “song” and it’s been banned by MTV! Presumably the network had some problems with the “coke white” references, but — here’s the kicker (ha) — MTV also wanted the Pack to change the name of the song. This is the first time I’ve heard of a video being banned for being too sneakery.

It would actually be pretty funny if they just blurred every image of and muffled every mention of Vans. All six thousand times. Will someone do that for my amusement please?

I was fond of the MTV edit of Moby’s cover of “That’s When I Reach For My Revolver”. The title itself was censored and the chorus substatially altered. Weird stuff.

MTV used to be pretty strict about blurring out logoware, but seems to have lightened up some. “My Humps” rattles off a half dozen brand names, but Pharell couldn’t pitch his ice creams – the shoes themselves and the reference to them were excised.

Didn’t they (or Clear Channel stations, one of those) stop playing “Air Force Ones” by Nelly a couple of years ago for being too “sneakery”?

But what of The Suicide Machines’ “Vans Song”? Am I the only one who remembers that?

What, MTV never heard of Run DMC?

    This Note’s for You

  10. Didn’t Moby self-censor the M.o.B. cover? And kudos to The Pack for not going to route of Weezer (We Are All On Drugs/In Love).

  11. Like someone else alluded to, what about “My Adidas”? I will bet you a million dollars that was not censored.

Yes. And it was because of songs like “my adidas” that these rules got made.

moby changed it to “that’s when i realize it’s over” but he also did one “that’s when i reach for my chihuahua”

  14. I didn’t even realize this song had rap verses, and i’ve heard it like, dozens of times. Either the local top 40 station plays an altered version, or i really tune it out of my head when it comes on at work….
