Call it pretentious, but remember that this is going to be one of the best videos of the past twenty years. Watch at YouTube.

looks like a perfume commercial, but with a cross.

    presenta, indeed…

  4. I wish I didn’t like the song, but I do.

Alright, you tube caught me in and I just watched all of Brendan Flowers interviews. Is he gay? He seems like he could be. And theres nothing wrong with that, it makes me like him more. Or actually, hate him less.

  6. I love it when bands that are on TRL are pretentious

it makes me feel really cool

  7. i think he is married or engaged ….i think i read somewhere that he is mormon and he doesn’t drink etc…

i don’t think this will be on heavy rotation at all in trl. i mean come on, the MTV kids don’t go for this type or isn’t that obvious? the spiritual theme, the cinematic feel and there’s not even the usually required token hot girl or guy (and brandon with his awfyl whiskers surely don’t count anymore)! for this, i’ve a newfound respect for the band. this proves that they couldn’t care less anymore of what clicks with those damn emo-screamo-adoring MTV kids. i’m just surprised that their record execs at island let them do what the hell they want to at this point.

  10. mtv? emo screamo? i think you mean shitty hip hop.

  11. hahaha no, he drinks. i drank with him after a concert last year, and he started wandering around singing to himself pretentiously and the roadies and other bands and even the rest of the killers were all making fun of him.

  12. What? I have no idea whats going on. They’re just asking to be called pretentious by releasing something like that.

Jesus, if one more person uses the word pretentious…

Try ostentatious; switch it up a bit.

Oh yeah, and I concur about the perfume ad. Desert Musk maybe…

I have to disagree with Finn. Look at how well Kanye West is recieved along with his videos. Minus Golddigger, they all have a moral/spiritual message in them and they’re all quite artsy.

I don’t think this twenty years joke is ever going to get old. I’m serious.

  16. hahaha, kind of like that old SNL skit from back in the day ‘Compulsion’ making fun of obsession by Calvin Kleen….

  17. Whatever. I’m intrigued and I like the song. So I guess the trailer worked for somebody.

I am so excited!!!!! I cannot wait for this video, nor can I wait for the album.

    “venir pronto” should say “proximamente”
its like saying “come soon” instead of “coming soon”

  20. dave  |   Posted on Aug 17th, 2006

completely overblown, extravagant and grandoise. flowers is indulging himself with this cocaine fuelled cinematic opus. and its gonna be sweet.

  21. Dirtysweet  |   Posted on Aug 17th, 2006

Dude, whoever translated that to Spanish doesn’t know shit.

  22. Love stereogum and everything associated with it, but file the word pretentious into the “should never be used when talking about music ever again, its used too much and it is often times used incorrectly” category (not here though)

sorry, and yeah I kinda like the killers

  23. Brandon  |   Posted on Aug 17th, 2006

Jenny was a friend of mine. And she was Latina. Probably.

  25. Mira  |   Posted on Aug 18th, 2006

the word pretentious is so freaking pretentious…

  26. The Killers hate on Stereogum is always funny. I like ‘em and am not ashamed of it!

Is the video directed by Anton Corbijn by the way?

  27. The video wasn’t done by Anton, no. Watch the preview, it says who it was by.

Brandon (not Brendon) is married, is Mormom, does drink, and does not do cocaine. Just thought I’d clear that up.

The whole video is up on YouTube now. And it is great.

I think indie snobs love the word “pretentious”. Don’t you?

  28. I meant Mormon. Whoops. I am so pretentious.

To me, it sounds in the full song like Flowers so wants to be Bono doing “Beautiful Day”. It’s like the Emperor with no clothes, he’s walking over a ledge, hoping people will be supporting him. And it seems lots of people (children) love the Killers, so he should be okay. Maybe just not in my eyes. The over-the-top cinematic stuff and the bad Spanish is fun, but are they in on the joke? Does it matter?

  30. i like the killers and yeah he is mormon and hes married and i no him and dont believe me but whatever you guys can think what u want but i know him. and i like this video even though its in spanish the director was tim burten so come on loosen up on brandon give him a chance for his song uncle :johnny took cocain: thats gonna be a big hit when SAMS TOWN comes out in october2cnd so yeah THE KILLERS ROCK!!!!

Hm, negative and positive comments alike… I think the purpose of the video is to intrigue and make you want to talk about it. They obviously want some sort of reaction. Has it worked? Totally. I love it

  35. sarah  |   Posted on Dec 15th, 2006

What is the purpose of the music video.. “when you were young” by The Killers? I love the song but i do not understand some parts of the video.

Like i dont get the beginning with the cross n everything.. But anyway is it like she meets this guy who isnt perfect but u kno “he talks like a gentlemen” n they get married.. n he has an affair… n then i get lost at the end again when they are in the bar.. like hmm!?? but the song is awesome… and i wouldnt have gone out here to find the answer if i didnt like the video.. SO well done Killers! <3
