There’s nothing like an unplugged Ben Gibbard set to remind you that the man has refined a signature style of storytelling. And there’s nothing like an unplugged Ben Gibbard unveiling his cover of another cherished lyricist to make you feel lucky to be within earshot. For those of you that couldn’t join us at our Range Life party down in Austin, we wanted to bring you a highlight of a week full of them. For the first time, Ben Gibbard covers the Magnetic Fields’ “I Don’t Want To Get Over You.” It was already Scott’s favorite Stephin Merritt Love Song. Something tells me it might now be one of his favorite anybody songs. Thanks for doing it, Ben.

  6. “For the first time, Ben Gibbard covers the Magnetic Fields.”

Actually, he covered “Why I Cry” back in 1997 on an All-Time Quarterback EP.

    • And he’s also covered “The Saddest Story Ever Told”.
‘Tis here, second one down (apologies for my lack of HTML skills): http://www.theopeningacts.com/2009/11/lets-listen-to-some-magnetic-fields-covers-part-five-the-miscellaneous-pile/

    • For the first time, Ben Gibbard covers the Magnetic Fields’ “I Don’t Want To Get Over You.”

Do you know how to read? There’s a fun little apostrophe that makes it much harder for you to be a pretentious dick/pretend that your comment makes sense.

      • I believe the apostrophe was added by an admin on this site after the initial post. I’m almost certain I copied and pasted the quote in my comment directly from the initial post (which, as you’ll notice, does not contain that fun little apostrophe). Certainly wouldn’t be the first time a Stereogum post has been edited after it was initially posted.

In any case, I wasn’t trying to be a “pretentious dick,” simply point out that Ben Gibbard has covered The Magnetic Fields before. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t believe I said, “Actually, he covered ‘Why I Cry’ back in 1997 on an All-Time Quarterback EP, ASSHOLE.”

For the record: amrit, I do not think you’re an asshole.

  7. You’re all being total dicks.

Love this cover, I’ll come over from Scotland next year as long as I can sleep in your Stereogum hammock.

  8. awesome cover version…

  9. Great shout out, scott!

  10. Sounds awesome. Ben can take any song and make it his.

  11. How many songs did he play, and what were they? Thanks.
