Yesterday’s interviews with America’s indie rock news anchors showed a frank and feathered Julian Casablancas admitting that the Strokes are tracking separately, and that they’re only playing festivals this summer for the cash. He brought the band he cares about a bit more about to Fallon on Monday. How much more does he care? He’s touring with them even though he said that they lost money their first time out. ”We might be in for a late night” Casablancas sings at the start of “River Of Brakelights.” Seems appropriate. He promised to do one from Phrazes For The Young that he hadn’t done on TV before, but “River Of Brakelights” was a hard one to pull off, with Casablancas straining his voice to make it to the end of its packed five minutes.
Phrazes For The Young is out via RCA.

Jessica, the reason they lost money is because the amount of production that was put into those shows at The Palace in L.A. I’m pretty sure they’re getting plenty for these ‘regular’ shows. You writers here at Stereogum are pretty shitty at looking up past interviews and news before writing articles. You make an immediate assumption without know the facts.
And to say he cares more about this band than the Strokes is absurd. He said he’d put his sweat and tears into the Strokes. He started doing this solo thing because the other members of the Strokes were doing their thing. They started recording some stuff, but since a) his thing is actually working out and selling quite a few tickets(and making money I’m sure) b)their, The Strokes, album wouldn’t be as good being put out in September as it would in January…..then taking an extra couple of months to do his own thing then get back to recording for the Strokes in May, seems quite beneficial for him and the Sick Six while at the same time not really taking away much time from the Strokes.
And they moved from Sept to January instead of say, Oct,Nov,Dec, because they don’t want to have to compete with “the Mariah’s” during the holiday season.
His backing band looks ridiculous. It looks like he just found a bunch of homeless street performers and hired them to back him. Damn this economy.
