On 9/23, the Virgin Festival hits Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. And we’re gonna give away two pairs of tickets (tickets are $100 each!). You’re responsible for your travel and lodging, but Pimlico is less than an hour from Washington, D.C., 2 hours from Philadelphia, 3 hours from New York City, and (we imagine) pretty damn close to Joel Madden

The fest features over 20 acts on 3 stages (Two Outdoor Stages and Dance Tent) from noon to 10 p.m.

Two Performance Stages
The Red Hot Chili Peppers
The Who
The Killers
Flaming Lips
The Raconteurs
Gnarls Barkley
Scissor Sisters

Wolfmother
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
New Pornographers

DJ Tent

If you want a pair of tickets just leave a comment that indicates (1) you will actually attend and not back out at the last minute, ’cause that pisses us off and (2) the act you’re most excited to see! Use your real e-mail so we can contact you if you win (don’t worry, you’re not signing up for anything.)

Contest ends Monday, 9/4 at 6 PM EST, and we’ll contact the winners shortly after! Good luck.

Yo. I am most excited to see the Who. Given that it’s kicking off their first worldwide tour in 25 years, I cannot wait.

Being that I’m 24 and a livelong Who fan, one sometimes thinks that they were born in the wrong decade. All I need to do is pop in some “Quadrophenia” and I’m automatically taken back to their heyday.

Or I could just use the tickets, ’cause that would suffice too.

Regardless, I’ll be at the show.

I’ll definitely be attending, since I live quite close. I’m most excited to see The New Pornographers!

Be there or be square. The top five acts on that bill are among my favorite bands in the world (RHCP being tops, Killers, Lips, Who, Raconteurs/White Stripes). PICK ME!! PICK ME!! *raises hand and jumps around in seat like schoolchild*.

I would actually attend the show as I am due a trip to Maryland to visit friends and bringing an extra ticket to the Virgin Festival as a peace offering would sure help (would it help my chances if I told you I was a Virgin?)

I am most excited to see KEANE…oh wait (guess they won’t be playing huh?) Scratch that I am most excited to see The Flaming Lips! Their live show is supposed to be amazing and I haven’t been able to catch them yet

I would definitely attend, if only for the chance to lick the sweet ass(es) of gnarls barkley. damn, cee_lo’s jelly rolls get me excited

I would love to see The Flaming Lips again. I’m from their hometown of Norman Oklahoma so I used to catch them alot back in the day, but I haven’t seen them since the boombox experiments of yore. I’ve heard they’ve gotten pretty good.

My friends were actually just talking about driving up to see this, but the tix price is kinda steep. Throw some tickets my way and I’ll be there with my high powered camera to provide you with pics.

I REALLY want to see The New Pornographers as well, my friend caught them at the sasquatch fest a few years ago and brought me back an autographed poster. Squeel!

I’ll be on a plane from Florida on Friday night (boy does a free ticket from Southwest come in handy). I’m most looking forward to seeing The Flaming Lips. I’ve been rocking out to them since I was in 8th grade, around the time “She Don’t Use Jelly” came out and I’ve been hooked ever since. The greatest concert experience of my life was being down front to see them in 2000 at the Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro, NC, and I’ve been dying to see them ever since.

I have to see what’s the fuss about over The Raconteurs. ‘Steady As She Goes’ was the most underwhelming 3 minutes of my life, but, I have a feeling they’re worth seeing live.

…isn’t this one of the shows Keane are gonna have to cancel? I wasn’t too big on their records, but, they really do get into live. Much more than The Killers ever will, best album of the next 20 years or not.

  10. (1) I Will Attend!
    (2) New Pornographers

I’m so in. I’ve lived in Maryland all my life, and I’m sick of HFStival. Counting Crows?!

  12. I’m always the most excited to see the Flaming Lips … and thanks to terrorism i was able to afford airfare. I am a bit concerned about The Who headlining. Fathers will have no problem bringing their teeny-bopper daughters along to catch the Killers

  13. At the risk of being attacked stereogum style I definitely won’t back out last second…so count me in!

I would love to see the Raconteurs!!

    Cheers,

  14. what- no penny tickets?

In case I didn’t make it clear enough.

    (1) I’m in, and as a lifelong Marylander, I’m sick of HFStival (Counting Crows?!!)

    (2) The Raconteurs

  16. Dean Burbage  |   Posted on Aug 28th, 2006

When the line-up was first announced, I had a powwow with three friends and we all planned on driving up from North Carolina. But two of my friends got cold feet at the $100-ness of it all, so I’m going up as a tag team effort with one other person. If I won this we’d could all go and share moments that fondle our emotions. And the Raconteurs is the one band we all agreed on we will see stick together and see no matter what.

  17. 1. I live in Frederick, Maryland– about 40 minutes away from Pimlico, so yeah. I’d be there.

    2. The Who. I was raised on The Who. I might possibly have WHO’S NEXT (2 or 3 slots above _Pet Sounds_) coded into my Y-chromosome. Of course, half the band is now dead, and half of the surviving members are clinically deaf, but it’s still The Goddamn Who. I’d have bought tickets, but I’m completely wiped out financially (I’m helping my mom buy a house / Getting lots of medical tests because I’ve got cancer [Yeah. Kidney cancer. Beat that, everyone else!]).

If chosen to win this contest, I promise to wear a tight stereogum t-shirt with black-rimmed glasses to the show, wear I will bitch endlessly on Pitchfork. I’ve been known to do that anyway (e.g. – http://vrbtm.livejournal.com/tag/music).

  18. I went to school down at the UMD and have plenty places to stay just the only thing holding me back is the pricey ticket….but if I had a pair i’ll be sure to bring a friend and have an absolute blast.
    The Who is my choice.

  19. Best friend is coming in from London on 20th for a week- haven’t seen her in 5 years- would love to take a road trip from NYC to the festivities and see all the amazing bands -esp. Wolfmother. (did I mention that she is a dj? -so this would be the ultimate). Thanks

  21. 1.) I most definitely will attend

    aaaaand

2.) It’s a toss up between Gnarls Barkley and Kasabian. That new Kasabian album is just so damn good… but I’ve missed Gnarls at every opportunity… Hmmm…

    Thanks!

I would totally be able to attend!

A great lineup — excited about The Who, Flaming Lips (never seen them live and I hear their shows are life-changing) and The New Pornographers. But I’m a little ashamed to admit that I am most excited about seeing Scissor Sisters, even though I’ve already seen them 8 times. What can I say? I’m a gay boy from NYC!

  40. i am undoubtedly there. from ny. and my car gets 38mpg so, uh, i won’t be hurting the world on my way?

i’m most excited to see… the chili peppers. should i be embarassed? well john frusciante’s solo work is my lifeblood and any chance to see him play would undoubtedly be a religious experience. and this would be the first time! pleeeeeease!!!

  41. Maryland is only 5 or so hours from NYC…easy drive!

I would go for The Who (duh), Thievery Coporation, – would be thrilled to see their dub live – Flaming Lips (read something about incorporating a UFO into their live show for a DVD – maybe we’d get lucky…), Clap Your Hands (I can’t help it, I love them!), Gnarls…

I think the festival will be an absolute BLAST!

I go to school in DC, so I’ll be very close to the show. As a poor college student, these would be extremely welcome. I’m most looking forward to seeing the Flaming Lips. I have seen Wayne Coyne come out in his giant plastic bubble too many times on YouTube not to see it in person.

I’d love to attend the show. How can the show be anything short of amazing? The lineup reads like a partial list of my favorite artists. I love the New Pornographers and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, but I’d most like to see the Raconteurs and the Flaming Lips. I have a feeling that they will upstage the headliners. I live in DC so getting there would not be a problem.

Ok heres the deal. I realize that this soemhow coincides with Rosh Hashannah, but I have a feeling that God himself will prolly be at the festival anyways, so no harm. But more importantly, if I can pull off tickets, I WILL GET LAID. and isn’t that all that matters! GETTING LAID, people! This long-time-friend-hopefully-cross-the-bridge-to-more-than-friend chick from AU made the offer to me that if I could get her a ticket, I’d be in there like swimwear. And if I get her and a friend a ticket, the logic result is a 3some. i would just buy the third ticket for myself. and since I’m not directly giving her (or her friend) money , its not prostitution, totally legal!

and as for bands…. um, Gnarles Barkley, since that who the girl wants to see the most….

As a huge Who fan from my own days as a wannabe teenage rebel, I have to say I’d be really… depressed to see them play together again. It’s over, fellas. You really should know when it’s time to quit and stick to that call. There is absolutely no way you can recapture the sound, energy, and attitude that made such great music so long ago, and anything short of that will just make us all feel that much closer to death. Why don’t you all f-f-f-fade away?

That said, I would really like to see the New Pornographers and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. I’m a fan of both bands (as well as Neko Case’s solo work), and their music seems like the kind of stuff that would really take on another dimension in a live performance. I also happen to live in Maryland about a half-hour from Baltimore, so attendance is not a problem.

I live in DC and would love to attend and I really want to see the flaming lips again. The last time I saw them was when the introduced the bubble for the first time at Coachella ’04, but since it took so long to get going they only played 4 songs. I need more.

  65. Most excited for Wolfmother and Gnarls Barkley. The Raconteurs did not make this choice ONLY because I’m seeing them in Boston the next weekend. I’ve got friends to stay with in Philly, so I definitely won’t bail. Hook me up!!

  66. 1) i will definitely attend since I live in baltimore and would love to go, had the tickets not be overpriced for only 1 day. so if i get them free, guaranteed I head up to the slums that is the pimlico area (as apposed to yuppieville Waldorf mr. madden)

    2) probably the flaming lips since i missed almost all of their set at coachella 2004 due to “heat difficulties” at the fest that year. pretty please?

  67. I’d definitely go. I’m most excited to see the Lips. I’ll spare you the details, but I’ve managed to miss every opportunity I’ve had to see them live, except for their appearance on Austin City Limits which I refuse to delete off my Tivo.

  68. I’m there!

The Who. (Are you kidding me? The Who?!)

  69. Erin  |   Posted on Aug 28th, 2006

    1. I live just outside DC in the People’s Republic of Northern Virginia, so I will definitely be able to attend.

    2. I have a soft spot in my heart for Brendan Benson, but really, the tiny gay man inside of me (I’m a straight girl), would really like to see the Scissor Sisters. Sometimes a SS song will come over my headphones and I’ll want to turn on the disco ball and do a pole dance until I realize I’m on a Metro train and it might be too shocking for those tourists from Iowa.

How could I not attend if you picked me? I’m just a Chinatown bus away and I’ve got friends at Johns Hopkins. I want to see the Who. I’ve never seen them live before and I’ll probably never have the bazillion $$$ to see them in the future. Also, I miss seeing shows in Baltimore, the crowds are less jaded.

I will definitely go. The act(s) I’d want to see the most are Clap Your Hands, Flaming Lips, Scissor Sisters, and The NPs….pick me! Pick me!

  74. 1) I’ll totally go.
    2) Wolfmother. Their guitars make my face melt.

Will I be able to Attend? YES.

Act I am most pumped about seeing?? BRAZILIAN GIRLS!!!

Their live performance is nothing short of orgasmic! I saw them a few months ago at an outside venue in NYC, and despite a malfunctioning sound system that prevented them from playing half of their new music, they still delivered an electrifying set. I have been counting down the days until their new album drops and would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see them again LIVE!!!!! PICK ME! PICK ME!! PICK ME!!!

  77. Patrick  |   Posted on Aug 28th, 2006

I would like to be selected. I am from Baltimore (born and raised) and have been drunk on the in-field at Pimlico many a time in the past (rite of passage for any MD youth). Now that I’m in the NY area I get very homesick for Baltimorians, who are the nicest and coolest people on the planet, way more laid back and polite than people around here and would relish the chance to rock out with the people again. Besides, I’ve gone an entire summer without seeing a can of Nahty Boh or a Black Eyed Susan, not to mention visiting the most ghetto place in the world according to Hilary Duff. Oh, and my mother would send you a personal thank you for giving her son a reason to stop working for a weekend and come down and see her.

With that said, I’d really like to see both the New Pornographers because I just recently got into them and would relish a chance to see them live, and The Raconteurs because Jack White is a silly silly man and watching that much pomp on a stage is always worth it. Also, if you’ve never heard “boo” being screamed in a Baltimore accent, then you my friend are missing out on something grand.

Also, the Who should be silly, and Gnarls while without a doubt be silly…

  82. I would most definitely be going if you would give me a pair of tickets, since I wouldn’t need lodging cause I’m an hour or so away from Pimlico.

The band I’d most like to see .. RHCP wouldn’t be bad again, or the Flaming Lips who I’ll finally see this week.

Let’s go with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.

As I’m living about half an hour from the festival site, I’d really like to see this. As to who I’m most psyched to see, I’d have to say Gnarls, since their headlining tour sold out before I had money for tickets. St Elsewhere is perhaps the best pop record released in the last ten years, and the fact that they are touring with a legitimate band instead of a lot of samples and triggers like so many pop artists is huge. Plus, I want to see what ridiculous costume they come up with this time.

I’d also be thrilled to see RJD2 and the Flaming Lips, both of whom I have tried to see multiple times only to have the plans fall through.

  88. I’m most excited to see the Who. It’s just classic.

I’ll definitely be there if I get a ticket.

Oh man… seeing the Who would be unimaginable. They said they might be doing a select few of their shows as special shows, like playing through Tommy or, my favorite, Quadrophenia.

Oh yeah… I have a car, wouldn’t miss it for the world.

  91. 1. i would really really really like to go. my parents live ten minutes from pimlico.

    2. the flaming lips. duh.

I definitely will be there and I’m most interested in Drive-By Truckers. They’ve grown artistically in the last few years and Paste Magazine calls them consistently one of the best live acts around.

  94. This festival is going to be out of this world and if I got a ticket there is no way I would not attend, and I even live in Ohio. This is the day before my birthday (sept. 24) and would be an amazing way to celebrate. I got screwed out of going to bonnarroo earlier this summer as my “friends” left me because I had to go to my last day of internship and they wouldn’t wait. So my summer music intake has seriously lacked since I couldn’t recover from that blow.

Although I am pumped about every act on the list, including the DJs who are all some of the best in the world (tiesto be rawken mein cawken) the act which I am most excited to see would definitely have to be gnarls barkley, as i have been a fan of dangermouse for a few years now starting with his grey album.

Anyway, this festival sounds amazing and I don’t care about driving that far since I have family in Maryland, I would definitely enjoy it.

    two words: The Who

  96. jon deSimone  |   Posted on Aug 28th, 2006

i’m most excited to see rjd2 for the reason that i’ve missed every chance i’ve had to attend one of his shows. and well, he’s fuckin rjd2! oh and i’ll definetly attend, i was thinking of going but just couldn’t justify travel expense and the money for a ticket, but if one was taken care of, ie the ticket, i wouldn’t miss that show for the world

ME, PLEEEEASE! I definitely won’t back out, since I live close and all that’s stopping me from going is the cost.

I’d love to see an infamous Flaming Lips live performance.

  98. Greg  |   Posted on Aug 28th, 2006

Yeah, I’ll most definitely attend–I live in Washington, so the commute to Baltimore is quite easy.

The act I’m most excited to see? The Flaming Lips–longtime fan, but I’ve never witnessed their supposedly legendary live show. I was close this summer when then came to Wakarusa in my home state of Kansas, but work prevented me from attending. So…yeah.

  99. I’d pay anything to see Soulwax/2 Many DJs over a weekend – even ridiculous plane fare from Arizona. The rest of the lineup is icing on the cake.

Hello, I’m Josh. I can honestly say I will not back out because, HELLO!

    THE WHO ARE PERFORMING!!!!!!!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

While I can honestly say there is not a single band on there that I am NOT pumped to see (besides Keane), how could you NOT be excited to see such an important, amazing, and totally kick-ass band as the Who!?!?

I am 14. My Dad introduced me to them when I was 11. They’ve been my favorite band ever since I bought their greatest hits collection in 7th Grade. In my opinion, Who’s Next is the best album of all time. Period.

The entire festival looks amazing (Red Hot Chili Peppers? Gnarls Barkley? THE DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS? It reads like a list of my favorite bands), but I would be begging on my hands and knees (figuratively) even if it was just The Who. I will probably never get the chance to see them again (I mean, c’mon, their pretty old). So, yeah, I’m pretty much gonna grovel now.

Stereogum is the best blog ever. I have discovered many great bands from you Mr. Scott.

Please allow me the chance to see The Who live before another one dies.

    Please?
