WFMU’s Beware Of The Blog has a fun contest up:
If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then popular music is ready for induction into the Sincerity Hall of Fame. This month’s DJ-produced compilation is Bill Zurat’s‘s 2005 marathon collection, Copycats, Imitators and Soundalikes.See if you can identify which well known band is, ahem, being paid homage to in each track below. The first correct listing in the comments section to this post wins the WFMU T-shirt of your choice. Since some tracks rip off more than one band at a time, the final arbiter will be Bill Z himself. Keep your guesses in the right order please!

Some good guesses at wfmu.org (except the guy who thinks everything is a Ween homage) so head there for spoilers after you give it a go yourself. And post your answers there if you wanna win a WFMU t-shirt.
We should make an indie rock version of this list! Any suggestions?

The Marc Eric track sounds very Beach Boys-esq.
Surely, you will need something from Sammy for the “fake Pavement” contribution…
Fake Pavement=Urusei Yatsura
Jobraith = David Bowie
And something from “Slanted & Enchanted” for the fake-Fall material. “Two States”, anyone?
My guesses aren’t too terribly different from the ones over and the board, but after listening to the whole thing (yikes), I’d have to go with…
1 – ABBA
2 – Echo and the Bunnymen
3 – Bauhaus
4 – Elvis Costello
5 – The Beach Boys
6 – Al Green
7 – Boston
8 – The Byrds
9 – Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young
10 – Siouxsie and the Banshees
11 – Gary Numan
12 – Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
13 – Nick Drake
14 – The Zombies
15 – David Bowie
Here’s mine, very similar to yours’ Ryan.
Bit subjective though, innit?
1 ABBA
2 Joy Division
3 Bauhaus
4 Elivs Costello
5 Beach Boys
6 Al Green
7 Boston
8 CSNY
9 Byrds
10 Siouxsie and the Banshees
11 Gary Numan
12 Nick Cave
13 Bert Jansch
14 Beatles
15 David Bowie
Now let me get back to work!
Yeah, it definitely is. There we a couple that I wanted to put several answers to.
But it was a fun distraction from work. :]
jobraith starts out cat stevens, then goes to bowie.
For indie-rock version, some obvious homages leap to mind (listed in order of imitator then original):
“Staying Fat” by Bloc Party = “O2″ by Sleater-Kinney
Anything from the latest Hockey Night album = Pavement
Le Tigre “TKO” = Le Tigre “FYR” –oh, wait…
“well… that’s just like , your opinion man …”
They forgot editors=interpol=joy division

MY TEENAGE STRIDE’S “REVERSAL” IS A CHILLS RIP OFF, ER, HOMAGE
THE BIRDS AND BEES “DOUBLE DRAG” SOUNDS LIKE NEW ORDER/JOY DIVISION’S “CEREMONY”
I’m not quite sure this rates as being indie enough… but Blur’s “M.O.R.” and David Bowie’s “Boys Keep Swinging” are the same fucking song… so there’s a suggestion if that makes the grade…
