Oasis have revealed the Stop The Clocks tracklist, and yes it does contain “Live Forever,” the greatest song of all time.

Say what you will about Oasis, but for Definitely fans who stopped caring years ago, it may be a welcome collection after all.
Speaking of Best Ofs, can we put an embargo on bands repackaging their hits every other year? We realize it’s usually a label decision, but still:
Alice In Chains – Essential (out now)
Prince – Ultimate (out now)
Aerosmith – Devil’s Got a New Disguise (10/10)
Depeche Mode – Best Of (11/13)
Some recent and upcoming greatest hits comps we can’t argue with: Missy Elliott (out now), Chris Isaak (out now), Mercury Rev (10/2), Eminem (12/5). They’re first timers. But we’re hearing rumors of another U2 Best Of (!) … and that’s just not right.
What band DOESN’T have a singles collection but deserves one? Radiohead? Weezer? Tapes ‘N Tapes?

I thought the song “Stop The Clocks” which I’ve been hearing so much about for years would be included. It’s not? And “Hindu Times” should be on this instead of shit “Songbird”. And this should be a double album. Where is “Whatever” or “Stop Crying Your Eyes Out”?
No Whatever? Whatever.
Pavement. I suspect most Pavement fans will want all of the proper albums instead (especially those double disc reissues which collect all of the b-sides, cd singles tracks, etc.). But I’d be much more inclined to buy a Pavement best-of, than one for Oasis (who sucked hard).
didn’t the beastie boys offer some roll your own greatest hits deal in the late ’90s? Where you picked from their entire catalog and got a burned disc? i just burn a copy of their most recent setlist if i want a short history of a band.
Where’s the PJ Harvey best of retrosprctive? It’s nearing 15 years since she’s been performing and not one compilation of hits or rarities. Oh the humanity.
Where’s the PJ Harvey best of retrospective? It’s nearing 15 years since she’s been putting albums out and not one compilation of hits or rarities. Oh the humanity.
I’d totally buy an eels best-of. Their first album came out ten years ago, so it’s a good time for it. Last Stop: This Town, Novocaine For The Soul, Rags to Rags, Mr. E’s Beautiful Blues, Souljacker Part 1, Saturday Morning… good stuff.
I’ve been amassing one or two mp3s per album, and having mp3s of 10-12 songs I really dig by a band, but not actually owning any albums, is making me feel a little bad. But every time I check out one of the full albums… I just never like the rest of it enough to drop the cash. So bring on the compilation!
This is a pretty respectable list (as a fan that stopped caring after Definitely Maybe). I have to agree that Whatever should be on there, given it’s one of my favorites among their early hits.
As a sidenote, what is the deal with Tapes N Tapes? I listened to the cd and was immediately bored.
The most important ‘best of’ collection that hasn’t happened yet? Easy:
AC/DC.
Period.
Awaiting best ofs:
Young Fresh Fellows
Yo La Tengo
radiohead doesn’t need one yet, they’re still relevant.
Gimme a Nick Drake or a Foo Fighters retrospective.
And Eminem isn’t a first timer. One came out last December called “Curtain Call.” Is this going to be an annual greatest hits?
depeche already has a best of? i wouldn’t say the “singles” sets were really best of.
i do admit, alice in chains has more best of sets than albums it seems.
To LL:
YLT – Prisoners of Love: A Smattering of Scintillating Senescent Songs 1985-2003
Ugh, so they are going to completely pass over the not-half-bad Be Here Now in favor of stuff from the last three lame-ass albums? What a great idea, Noel!
How about a White Stripes comp? I’d love for their earlier stuff to get some more play.
U2 has some kind of contractual obligation to put a Best Of: out every 10 years. It does get a bit nuts when there will be, what 3 albums to pull material from?
PJ Harvey was the first person I thought of! And it would be cool of Sleater Kinney to release a collection since they aren’t recording anything new anymore (or a live disk??)
But like someone echoed above – a big fan would have most of the work. I don’t have Tori or Bjork’s best ofs for this reason. So my final answer is:
Jay-Z
There is a Nick Drake best-of, titled Way To Blue: an Introduction to Nick Drake. It’s the first Drake album I ever heard.
Radiohead will never allow one.
The Chris Issak one is very good.
Radiohead needs a b-sides album, not a singles album.
I like the comment on an earlier Stereogum post where someone said that Weezer had a greatest hits album. It’s called the Blue Album.
Yeah, Jay-Z.
Eminem already has a best of…I just can’t remember what it’s called.
Hmm I like the sequencing of the songs
I haven’t seen the tracklist for the new AIC best of, but the last one left a lot to be desired, so I’m not terribly upset by the prospect. Moreover, as the band has reunited and is touring (keep in mind, Cantrell wrote all their best and most important songs, so Layne Staley’s death isn’t as big a deal as dead singers are with some other bands) I’m sure the label wants to promote that.
according to xfm, stop the clocks is coming out as a one off single.
how can commguru not have a compliation out? or sons of the stage?
someone asked about a PJ Harvey rarities cd, she put out a rarities disc called the 4 track demos like 12 years ago
Depeche already has “catching up with” / “the singles 81-85″ / “singles 86-95″ & “remixes 81-04″
and who doesnt consider a cd called “the singles” to be a greatest hits cd ??
Husker Du could use one, especially if all of the rights issues were resolved and Mould (or someone) could remaster their stuff. The existing CDs sound tinny and shrill, which probably isn’t helping to bring in a lot of new converts for a great band. Even the cassettes I used to have sounded warmer.
