Hype Williams directs the animated clip for 808s‘ second single “Heartless,” and while it’s not the first time Kanye’s gone cartoony, this time it’s actually him featured in drawings and not his surrogate shutter-shaded Ye-Bear. West walks around gesticulating and doubling over in emotion, loitering on palm tree-lined streets and in his apartment, while his cold cold lover preens in fuck-me boots in front of some Warhol prints in her pad. Just your average Saturday morning cartoon type stuff. Worth noting: Animated Kanye is a depression smoker and still dresses much better than you. The set design is also inspired by the rapper’s real life living room.

UPDATE: Kanye blogs, “I DIDN’T LEAK THIS BUT AT LEAST HERE’S A CLEAR VERSION! THIS VIDEO WAS ROTOSCOPED. WE RECORDED REAL PEOPLE AND THEN HAD 65 ANIMATORS IN HONG KONG HAND DRAW OVER EVERY CELL . INSPIRED BY THE MOVIE “AMERICAN POP” . HYPE SHOWED ME THE MOVIE AND I WAS SOLD.”

UPDATE 2: Kanye blogs, “ATTENTION!!!! HEARTLESS NEW MIX AND MASTER, DJ’S PLEASE PLAY THIS VERSION INSTEAD” and says to download the MP3 here. He’s giving away a remastered “Love Lockdown,” too.

  5. seriously.

Do you understand what the term ‘rotoscope’ means? I’m pretty sure the man was involved in the creation of the video, at least a little bit.

Also, Tom Waits For No One, anybody?

  11. Whether you like it or not, this is the continuation of kanye’s infinite creativity. It’s because of Kanye West that rap doesn’t have to be about money, bitchez, hoez, and grillz. Kanye knows art, music and style. That’s what’s gonna save rap. Not Soulja boiiiiiiiiiiiii.

So cool! I’m not really a big Kanye fan, but I’ve always loved American Pop. When I came across the video, I got all excited…I can’t believe Kanye did that! I love it.
