The album’s good, aside from two abysmal tracks in the middle that really mess it up.
Three middle abysmal tracks for me, with The Perfect Crime taking the helm of worst Decembs songs ever.
What we really need is new Laura Veirs…
I can’t believe how many people slate The Perfect Crime & When The War Came – can’t take a little variation in style? I find them more interesting than the Laura Veirs duet, very pretty though it is. Shankhill Butchers is the only track I’d actually drop from the record.
Don’t worry, seeing “The Perfect Crime” live will melt those fears away… trust me.
Perfect crime is my favorite song on the album, This album is my second favorite after Picaresque.

perfect crime is a great song. I love the beat and almost 70s feel to it. Without it this would just be more of the same (although great) from colin and crew
Shankill Butchers is a GREAT song. “Perfect Crime” and “When the War Came” aren’t my favorites, but they’re listenable. Crane Wife 3 is amazing.
There aren’t any songs that I don’t like on this album, but Colin’s voice on “Shankill Butchers” is a little grating.
The Perfect Crime starts out really awesomely, and then Colin ruins it to hell with that annoyingass chorus.
My general opinion of this album is that it has some of the best stuff they’ve ever recorded, but it also has some of the worst, most grating stuff they’ve ever recorded as well.
The Perfect Crime is the type of song I’d sniff coke to.
the perfect crime is the decemberists exorcising their steely dan. successfully! it grew on me, but it’s still their worst ever. pretty good for a worst ever, really.
it’s a sprawling album, for the decemberists, still experimental for them. they’ve created so much here, and borrowed from good sources.
